Ureshino is a city located in the western part of Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan. As of February 28, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 26,937 and a population density of 210 persons per km2. The total area is 126.51 km2. The modern city of Ureshino was formed on January 1, 2006, by the merger of the former town of Ureshino, absorbing the town of Shiota . Ureshino is locally known for the green tea grown there and its hot spring resorts.

    During the final stage of World War II, the United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively. The United States dropped the bombs after obtaining the consent of the United Kingdom, as required by the Quebec Agreement. The two bombings killed 129,000–226,000 people, most of whom were civilians. They remain the only use of nuclear weapons in the history of warfare. In the final year of the war, the Allies prepared for what was anticipated to be a very costly invasion of the Japanese mainland. This undertaking was preceded by a conventional and firebombing campaign that destroyed 67 Japanese cities.
