Nazare - Portugal HD
The Nazaré beach, with a mild climate and natural beauty, has the oldest traditions of Portugal linked to the fishing arts.
The long, crescent-shaped beach, which is also the seafront of the city, is known for its grandeur and brightly colored awnings that decorate the white sand beach in contrast to the blue of the water.
This is the beach of Portugal where the traditions of fishing are more colorful and it is not uncommon to cross with the fishmongers who still wear the seven skirts, as tradition says. On a late Saturday afternoon in the summer months, it is essential to sit on the wall watching the interesting spectacle of Arte Xávega, where fish nets arrive from the sea and the women shout their trading sessions. If we do not exactly understand the words, it's nothing to worry about. These are codes that often only they know.
Facing the sea, on the right side, we see an impressive promontory. It is the Site, where we have one of the most known panoramic views of the Portuguese coast. There are 318 meters of rock falling steeply to the sea, which is reached on foot, for the most courageous, or climbing the elevator. At the top, we find the little Hermitage of Memory, where we can tell the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made preventing the horse of a nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, from launching on the cliff. True or not, in the Mirador de Suberco we can see the sign left on the rock by the horseshoe on this foggy morning of 1182. In the Sítio, we can still visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré and not far away, the Dr. Joaquim Manso Museum To learn more about the Nazarene traditions.
From the Sítio and with time for a walk, crossing Pedralva Park, you come to Pederneira, a natural lookout point with a must see on the coast of Nazaré.
Nowadays, the great attraction of this city is the waves and the surf, thanks to the Canção da Nazaré, a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of giant and perfect waves. It is the largest submerged gorge in Europe, with about 170 kilometers along the coast, which is 5000 meters deep.
Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara gave him world-wide visibility when in 2011 he made the world's largest sand-bottom wave, about 30 meters long, at Praia do Norte, winning the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Awards and setting a record Of the Guinness Book. Similarly, surfers from all over the world visit Nazareth every year to venture into the sea. On the beach, sunbathing is also appreciated and an excellent audience to appreciate the feats of these young people.
To get to know Nazaré you do not need a relaxed stroll through the narrow streets, perpendicular to the beach, and a break in one of the restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood, grilled fish or an appetizing stew. And at dusk, nothing like enjoying the setting sun on any terrace overlooking the sea, as the lights come on and dusk.

Located next to the sea, between Setúbal and the fishing town of Sesimbra, Arrábida Natural Park has incomparable natural beauty, where the blue of the sea alternates with the white tones of the chalk cliffs and the depths of the green vegetation that covers the mountain range.
One of the main attractions of the Park is the wealth of its indigenous vegetation. One of the rare examples of Mediterranean maquis in Portugal can be found here, and its preservation was one of the reasons which led the Arrábida zone to be considered as a genuine international scientific relic. In order to preserve these vegetation species, it is only possible to visit certain areas when accompanied by an official guide indicated by the Park’s services. There are also various accredited companies that organise radical activities, such as speleology, diving and mountain climbing.
If you want to learn more about the animal and plant life, visit the Oceanographic Museum, installed in the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Arrábida, next to Portinho beach. Almost directly in front, it's possible to see the Pedra da Anixa, a small island that constitutes a zoological reserve, due to its underwater vegetation.
In addition to the Serra da Arrábida, the Park also includes other mountain ranges such as the Serra do Risco, which contains the highest peak along the Portuguese mainland coast -- it is a magnificent cliff measuring 380 m high, that overlooks the sea, from which it is possible to appreciate an unforgettable panoramic view over the Atlantic.
The action of the sea against the mountains has originated a line of beaches characterised by fine sand and transparent waters, that we might otherwise believe could only be found in the Mediterranean, such as Figueirinha, Galapos and the Portinho da Arrábida.
The zone was appreciated by Franciscan friars between the 16th and 19th centuries, who inhabited the convent that still exists in the zone and meditated in the isolated chapels dispersed throughout the mountains. Arrábida has excellent conditions for farming activities and pasture, and has thus originated high-quality products. Examples include the wines that can be discovered by following the Costa Azul wine route, which leads visitors to the friendly town of Azeitão where they can sample some delicious cheeses.

From its days as a Phoenician outpost to its expansion into a 16th century trading giant, from the Great Earthquake of 1755 to its glorious reconstruction, Lisbon has long been a city of shifting fortunes.
Lisbon has forever been linked to the sea and it’s on the waterfront where you’ll find the city’s grand gateway, Praça do Comércio. Pass beneath the triumphal arch, a tribute to the city’s reconstruction, and drift down Rua Augusta to another of Lisbon’s great squares, the Rossio.
Climb aboard Tram 28, which passes some of the city’s most iconic sights, then climb the battlements of Castelo de São Jorge to see the red tiled roofs of Lisbon spread out before you.
Although the Great Earthquake reduced much of Lisbon to rubble, the ancient suburb of Alfama was spared. Lose yourself amid the cobblestones, where cafes, bars and artisan shops have taken residence in the dockworkers homes of old. As the sun gets low, join locals in a fado bar to hear heartrending songs of the working class.
20 miles west of the city is Cascais, a sleepy fishing village until Lisbon’s nobility discovered its golden bays in the late 1800s. Another playground for Portugal’s Monarchs was Sintra, which Hans Christian Andersen called the most beautiful place in Portugal.
After Sintra, spend a few days exploring some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, such as Praia das Maçãs, Adraga and Ursa. At Cape Roca, stand upon the clifftop, which until the 14th century was considered the end of the world.
