Discover Amsterdam wetland by canoe
Here is an idea for a excursion outside of Amsterdam by the water, in fields away from canals, birds, flowers and cows.
What if, to better understand and appreciate Amsterdam, you had to leave town, take a bus up North and stop in the middle of the countryside to browse by canoe?
Majel from Wetland Safari takes you on a beautiful trip in the wetlands, 10 minutes away from the central Station of Amsterdam.
It starts in Watergang, a village with 83 houses and 217 residents. A cafe, a map introducing you to the area, and there you are, with a red life jacket on your back ready for an adventure.
The stroll is chilled. The area is chilled. Majel is chilled. All is good.
You will leave the picturesque canals of the village behind for the fields. Majel will talk to you about water, polders and dams, and the vegetation which makes the irrigation system possible.
The Dutch are the best in the world when it comes to water management and the creation of land out of inundated areas. A proverb says that God created the Earth and Dutch people created the Netherlands. Global warming, the rising of the oceans and droughts present new challenges. The increasing salanity of the water levels, dam soundness on the sea side and on the polder side… Dams must remain damp on the inside. If they dry up, they become brittle and they collapse.
Wetlands is a nesting or passage area for many migrating birds. Black-tailed godwit, ruff, purple heron, harrier, and other passerines. The best period to enjoy the birds’ presence is from spring to autumn. By then, most of the birds would have left for Africa or Asia.
You may come across cows surprised to see you there. They are taken from pasture to pasture on a barge.
Flora is surprising here too. The landscape may be dominated by reeds and rushes but you can see merciless carnivore plants, elegant meadowsweets, water mint, stunning water lilies, demure forget-me-nots or water irises.
If this landscape inspired Flemish painters, Rembrandt coming first to mind, it rather reminds you of Nympheas by Monet or to Manet when you enjoy a picnic amongst the flowers in the summer.
Back to the village, we made a dip in a shallow but refreshing lake, and at the end we have a drink all together to share our impressions. In our group, there were a Spanish couple splitting their time between England and the Netherlands and some Canadian women living in the US.
The trip takes half a day and it is a really unique and lovely experience.

Biking Along the Amstel River Amsterdam
New Amsterdam Travel Video- Touring an area outside the city by bike is a must if you have some extra time to spare. Bike tour companies tend to favor going north to the Waterland area, but the areas to the south are overlooked. Biking south along the Amstel River to the small town of Ouderkerk Aan de Amstel is a great way to see beautiful scenery, watch an endless parade of boats, visit a storybook village and engage in the Dutch national past time, biking. Start around Amstel Station on the bike path on the East side of the river. Along the 9 km. route you'll pass Amstel Park, several windmills, big cottage-like houses, and pastures with cows, sheep and horses. Along the way you can stop at restaurant Klein Kalfje and also at country house Wester-Amstel with its park and gardens. There are also numerous places along the way to lay out and take a dip in the water. Ouderkerk Aan de Amstel is a picturesque town with spired churches, small canals, wooden bridges and waterside cafes. You can also visit their historical museum and the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Netherlands. A few upscale restaurants like Loetje and Ron's Gastrobar are popular with the well-to-do who pull up in their bigger boats. Tip: start late morning on the west side; stop at Klein Kalfje for lunch; visit the Wester-Amstel house; walk around the town and finish off with dinner or a drink. Then bike back along the east side. Tip 2: There are several points to cross the river. Between Amstel Station and Amstel Park, there is the Rijnstraat bridge and the A-10 overpass. Between Amstel Park and Klein Kalfje there is a pont that takes you across.. (closes after 17 or 17:30) And in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel there is also a bridge.

Edam
Edam is een stad in de Nederlandse provincie Noord-Holland. Samen met Volendam vormt Edam de gemeente Edam-Volendam. De stad telt ongeveer 7380 inwoners. Edam heeft een gezellig klein compact centrum met veel monumenten en grachten met trapgevels. De toeristen trekken vaak naar Volendam maar Edam heeft zeker zoveel charme als een van de mooie vestingstadjes rond het Ijsselmeer. Edam is ook bekend van zijn kaas die in een soort kogelvorm op markt word gebracht. De Edammer is wereldwijd als kaas bekend.

Amsterdam je oduvek simbolizovao mesto u kome vlada duh tolerancije i sloboda izražavanja. Razvijajući se kroz vekove on je sačuvao tu osobenost i danas je jedan od najliberalnijih gradova u Evropi. Upravo iz tih karakteristika proističu i neke od najpoznatijih turističkih atrakcija ovog holandskog grada, kao što su Red Light Distrikt ili brojni kofi šopovi. Ali krenimo redom:
Amsterdam je najveći grad Holandije i ujedno finansijski i kulturni centar. Osnovan je u 12. veku kao ribarsko mesto na reci Amstel. Zlatno doba Amsterdama je vezano za kraj 16. i 17. veka kada su u grad došli brojni Jevreji iz Antverpena. Novac koji su poneli sa sobom je korišćen za organizovanje trgovačkih tura do Indije, što je dovelo do osnivanja i prve multinacionalne kompanije u svetu. U tom periodu je Amsterdam i izgradio svoj prepoznatljivi gradski pejzaž sa uređenim kanalima, mostovima, stambenim jedinicama i važnim istorijskim građevinama kao što je Kraljevska palata na trgu Dam.
Zahvaljujući bogatstvu, grad se paralelno i kulturno razvijao, pored ekspanzije talentovanih holandskih slikara, došlo je i do pojave brojnih trgovaca umetninama što je Amsterdam učinilo jednom od kulturnih prestonica Evrope. Taj status je i danas zadržan, a kulturno nasleđe ovog grada možemo videti u mnogobrojnim muzejima i galerijama među kojim se izdvajaju: Rajksmuzej -- Narodni muzej, muzej Van Goga, Stedelik muzej ili Kuća Ane Frank. Takođe, poput Londona i u Amsterdamu se nalazi muzej voštanih figura Madam Tiso.
Iako je javni saobraćaj u Amsterdamu dobro organizovan, preporučuje se da razgledanje obavite uz šetnju, jer je celo staro gradsko jezgro, u kome se nalaze sve važne atrakcije, poput velikog muzeja na otvorenom. Dobra alternativa je i vožnja biciklom, koje je jedno od zaštitnih znakova Amsterdama.
Nasuprot strani ovoga grada koju krasi umetnost i otmenost, postoji i ona druga, u kojoj ljudi zadovoljavaju potrebe kroz konzumiranje lakih droga ili prostituciju, koji su u Amsterdamu legalni. U Amsterdamu postoji oko 200 kofi šopova u kojima je dozvoljeno konzumiranje kanabisa. Pošto reklamiranje psihoaktivnih supstanci nije dozvoljeno ovi objekti se mogu prepoznati po nalepnicama na izlogu. Najpoznatija zona prostitucije u svetu se naziva Red light district, ona je ujedno i najstariji deo grada sa tipičnim Amsterdamskim duhom koji se manifestuje nizom kanala i mostića, među kojima su izlozi sa damama iz svih delova sveta. Ovde turisti uživaju i u dobroj muzici kao i u različitim nacionalnim restoranima. Crvena zona nije za svakoga, ali će se ljudi bez predrasuda i visokomoralnih načela ovde zasigurno dobro provesti, dok će ostali svoj mir pronaći u romantičnim pejzažima jedne od „severnih Venecija

Amsterdam et ses environs sont sillonnés par plus de 150 canaux, créant ainsi près de 90 mini-îles reliées par un réseau d'un millier de ponts. Pendant de nombreux siècles, ces canaux et voies d'eau ont été utilisés comme principales voies de transport à Amsterdam, notamment pour le transport d'eau, de charbon, de nourriture ou d'épices. Aujourd'hui, ces canaux ne sont adaptés qu'aux petites péniches, aux bateaux de plaisance et aux bateaux-mouches. Ils restent toutefois toujours utilisés par DHL dont le bateau livre des colis à travers toute la ville.
Trois ferries transportent gratuitement les piétons et les cyclistes sur l'IJ, entre la gare centrale d'Amsterdam et Amsterdam-Noord. Deux autre ferries payants permettent de parcourir l'IJ d'est en ouest le long du port. Il est également possible d'utiliser des bateaux-taxis et des navettes fluviales, de louer des bateaux électriques ou encore d'effectuer une croisière fluviale sur les canaux de la ville.
