Sankt Andrä, a town of some 11,000 people in the Lavant Valley of Carinthia is probably best known for its basilica - quite a small town for such an important church! You can see in the film where I am parked - this parking is legal but I don't think that the town would want to encourage too many motorhome users to leave their vehicles there at once! Unfortunately there is no local campsite. You can also see in the photograph the tourist information office where in my case the service was really excellent. It is rare to be served by someone as keen to explain what can be seen in the area.
I came to the town by following the Austrian route 70 from Völkermarkt to Wolfsberg. The route is an ancient one crossing the Alps, nearby the Romans mined marble and a thousand years later clay was also mined. The route 70 is relatively easy whilst coming from the west and travelling east, if one approaches from the east then the road can be quite winding and steep and could pose a challenge for motorhomers of a more nervous disposition with large vehicles. In that case the motorway is available.

I start this part of my journey just outside Eichfeld, a village of just under 900 inhabitants continuing on to Gosdorf, Diepersdorf, Fluttendorf, Weixelbaum and Unterpurkla where I leave the Austrian Bundestrasse 69 to join the B66 heading north. I had been on the B69, also called the Südsteirische Grenz Straße, for some time and appreciated the wonderful views of the Karawanken mountains that it offered.
The B66 is the Gleichenberger Straße. This road is 42.9 km long and runs from Ilz in the Valley of Feistritzwerke to Bad Gleichenberg. In this journey I take only a short part of this journey.
South of Bad Gleichenberg I turn right passing through Bairisch Kölldorf which I note is a very attractive village. From there I pass through Kapfenstein heading north, through Mahrensdorf and Fehring until I join Austrian Bundestrasse 57 towards Jennersdorf on the Gussinger Strasse at the same time as passing over the border between the provinces of Styria and Burgenland.

I am very fortunate that I can spend a large part of my life travelling, thanks to the business I chose to run which allows me to do this. There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Mancher erinnert sich vielleicht noch an den Video-Wettbewerb Tourentester gesucht, der von POLO Motorrad in Zusammenarbeit mit Kleine historische Städte in Österreich Anfang des Jahres 2015 ausgelobt wurde.
Einer der beiden Gewinnerteams waren meine Sozia und ich.
Wir durften uns eine Tour aus dem Programm raussuchen.
Station machten wir in Gmunden am Traunsee, Bad Ischl und Radstadt.

Egy régi túravágyam valóra váltása a Dráva túra. Nagyjából a folyót követve tekerek ebben a sorozatban, egészen Ptujig (Szlovénia), közben kisebb-nagyobb kitérőket is tettem az Alpokban.

Romantik Hotel Richard Lowenherz is a charming hotel in the town of Dürnstein in the beautiful alpen country Austria. Dürnstein is famous because England's King Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned in the castle on the hill above the town.

On my journey through the Pollino Mountains in southern Italy, I stop to buy fuel and food at the Conad hypermarket in Lauria. This is the cheapest fuel I know of in Italy, although of course there may be cheaper places. I am also quite impressed by the service in the Conad store in Lauria and the suggestions I get from the staff on local foods.
Lauria is found at the northern end of the Pollino Mountains in the Italian province of Basilicata. You see very little of Lauria in this film and maybe I should have stopped there - I certainly will do next time. It is a walled city that is over 1,000 years old. It's castle was built by the Saracens. In the 12th century Lauria was the seat of a Norman fief, which was held by Gibel and then by his son Richard of Lauria, who died in the battle of Benevento on 1266. In 1806 the city was destroyed and the population massacred by Napoleonic troops under general André Masséna, following the way in which the Kingdom of Naples had defied the French although after the Battle of Austerlitz and the defeat of the Austrians and Russians, Naples was unable to defend itself. The battle of Campotenese was fought to the south of Lauria in the Pollino Mountains.
Even though it is the beginning of June we can see snow at moments - snow had fallen on 2 June in higher areas although you can see in other films how nice the weather was.
Lauria has wonderful views of the Pollino mountains. I particularly like this range of mountains, I comment a couple of times that I find the views and drive even better than those in the Alps! This is the border of Calabria and Basilicata in southern Italy and in 1992 it was included in the Pollino National Park which I believe is the largest national park in Europe (I may be wrong about that). The range and park is named after Monte Pollino 2,248 m but the highest point is Serra Dolcedorme at 2,267 m which overlooks the plain of Sibari. Despite the height of these mountains, have a look at a map and see how close it is to the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. The Pollino is home to a large number of interesting species including wolves and I very much hope that I will get the chance to see more of it!
This is part of a very long journey in May and June 2013 from Brucoli in Sicily to Bełżec on the Polish - Ukrainian border. From there I travelled to the UK - so the journey was much longer but I did not film the part from eastern Poland to Norwich (UK).
