GREECE: EXPLORING the historic MEDIEVAL CASTLE, island of CHIOS (ΧΙΟΣ)

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the historic Castle of Chios which is a medieval citadel in Chios town on the Greek island of Chios (ΧΙΟΣ). The castle is situated adjacent to the main port of Chios and its east side borders with the sea. It consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stone wall structure with various fortifications purposed to defend the enclosed population and properties against naval attack and siege.

The castle was constructed in the medieval period with its first construction phase having started in the 10th century by the Byzantines. The structures surviving to this day are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.

Volissos located 40 kilometers from the island's capital and is the largest village in northwestern Chios. It is a village with a long history. Volissos according to Thucydides, was once an old wind city famed as the birthplace of Homer. At the top of the hill, a castle was built in medieval times. The Byzantine castle has a trapezoid shape with six circular towers. Inside the castle there were several buildings, cisterns and churches. Windmills and watermills some ruins and many Byzantine churches adorn the surroundings. There was also a tunnel connecting the castle with the coast and the area of Python.

These two windmills are the only two that have survived from the 10 that existed on the island. They were built in the mid-19th century and they were used to grind wheat to make flour. Mesta is the most remote of the medieval villages, but also the most well-preserved. The appearance of the village and its architecture is unique in Greece. The houses are built side by side without gaps, leaving only two gate entrances to the village. The streets are narrow and most are covered with arches upon which houses are built. The whole village has been designed and built as a maze in order to prevent pirates from easily reaching the center of the village where the most important buildings are located. The oldest monument of Mesta is the church of the Old Taxiarch.
