It came into existence as a metropolitan county in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972, formed from parts of Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. The county itself is a NUTS 2 region within the wider NUTS 1 region of the same name.     West Midlands Metro is a light-rail/tram line in the county of West Midlands, England, operating between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton via the towns of West Bromwich and Wednesbury. The line operates on streets in urban areas, and reopened conventional rail tracks that link the towns and cities. It is operated and owned by Transport for West Midlands. The Midland Metro Alliance brings together TfWM as well as various engineering and consultancy firms in a long term framework agreement to design and construct future expansions. The system was known as Midland Metro prior to June 2018. The line opened on 30 May 1999, mostly using the former disused Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level Line.
