Nagaland is a mountainous state in northeast India, bordering Myanmar. It's home to diverse indigenous tribes, with festivals and markets celebrating the different tribes' culture. Its capital city of Kohima suffered heavy fighting in World War II, commemorated by memorials at the Kohima War Cemetery. The Nagaland State Museum exhibits ancient weaponry, a ceremonial drum and other traditional Naga cultural artifacts.

Kohima is the hilly capital of India's north eastern border state of Nagaland which shares its borders with Burma. It lies in Kohima District and is one of the three Nagaland towns with Municipal council status along with Dimapur and Mokokchung.
Kohima is the land of the Angami Naga tribe. The name, Kohima, was officially given by the British as they could not pronounce the Angami name Kewhima or Kewhira (Tenyidie for the land where the flower Kewhi grows). It is called after the wild flowering plant Kewhi, found in the mountains. Earlier, Kohima was also known as Thigoma. Kohima is located south of Kohima District (25.67°N 94.12°E) and has an average elevation of 1261 metres (4137 feet). The town of Kohima is located on the top of a high ridge and the town serpentines along the top of the mountain ranges as is typical of most Naga settlements.

Home of Lothas having a total geographical area of 1628 Sq. Km, accounting 9.82% of the total geographical area of the State, Wokha District is situated in the mid Western part of the Nagaland State. The Wokha District is situated in the mid western part of Nagaland State, adjacent to Sibsagar plain of the Assam State. It is bounded by Mokokchung District in the North, Kohima District in the South. Zunheboto District in the East and the State of the Assam in the West. The Wokha District is situated at a latitude of 26° '8' North and a longitude of 94° '18' East.
Wokha literally means Census in Lotha. It was a place where Lothas counted heads before spreading out into the villages during their waves of migration. It is a land of beautiful, mountain ranges and rivers and is known for their vibrant dances and folk songs. Some noteworthy hills here are Mount Tiyi and Totsu Cliff. Doyang is the lagest river in the District and there is a Hydro Electricity Station with a capacity of 75MW called Doyang Hydro Project which is located across the Doyang River.
The Topography of the district is more or less similar with that of other district in the state, having ranges and ridges di-sected by seasonal streams. the altitude ranges from 304.3 Mtrs to 1313.67 Mtrs (MSL). The climate is warm in the lower plain areas, moderately warm in the upper region during summer but cold in winter. The monsoon starts from May and continues till October. The annual rainfall varies from 200 cm to 250 cms. Wokha is also famous for fruits like Oranges, Passion fruits, Plum and Bananas. The soil types are recent Alluvium, old Alluvium Mountains valley Lateritic soil, brows forest and podzolic soils.
Agriculture and allied activities are the principal means of livelihood for the vast majority of the population residing in the rural area. Rice is the major food crop and occupies 77% of the total cultivable area. Other major crops grown are maize, tapioca, pulses, soya beans and variety of organic vegetables, which are available in the local market year around.
The staple food diets of the people are Rice, Bamboo shoot of various types, fermented of dried fish, yam, Molasses, Vegetables and meat, which is a delicacy. Foods are mostly boiled and species are rarely used. They are very particular, both in their food preparation and habit of taste. The people of the district also practice certain traditional cottage Industries mostly during the off season to meet their local requirements, like black smithy, traditional weaving, carpentry and handicraft etc. minerals like coal and cude oil are found at Changpang area in the lower range.

Wokha district, declared as 'the land of plenty' by the state government of Nagaland, due to her rich mineral resources, soil fertility and abounding flora and fauna. The district is situated at an economically strategic location sharing borders with Assam in the West and North, Kohima and Dimapur in the South, Zunheboto in the East and Mokokchung in the North East.
Wokha literally means head count or census in Lotha dialect. It has a population of 35,004, of which 92% Christian. It is predominantly inhabited by the Lotha tribe.
The district has four assembly constituencies and 125 recognized villages. It is further divided into 13 administrative units and 7 rural development blocks. It has three ranges namely, Upper Range covering the Wokha, Wozhuro, Chukitong and Englan circle; Middle range covering the Lotsu, Sanis and Aitepyong circle and lower range covering the Bhandari Circle and Ralan area.

This is Part 1 from my 3 part web series across Manipur. In this part, I will be exploring the famous Loktak lake and a few places in and around Imphal. Hope you all enjoy it :) Stay tuned for next part :)
Manipur is a state in Northeast India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. It is bounded by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, and Assam to the west; Burma (Myanmar) lies to its east. The state covers an area of 22,327 square kilometres (8,621 sq mi) and has a population of almost 3 million, including the Meitei, who are the majority group in the state, Loi, Yaithibi, Kuki and Naga peoples, who speak a variety of Sino-Tibetan languages. Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years. It has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia and China, enabling migration of people, cultures, and religions.

Doyang Hydro Project - Electric power generating site in Wokha, Nagaland
The Doyang River is one of the most important, biggest and longest river located in the Wokha District of Nagaland. It is called as Dzu or Dzulu by the Angamis, the natives of Wokha. The main tributaries of this river are Tsui, Tullo and Tishi. The Doyang River originates from the north and then slightly turns toward east when it received an addition of Saju, an eastward parallel tributary. The river then enters Zunheboto district still flowing north westwardly. It later on forms a boundary line between Sema and Lotha areas. In the west of Litami it makes westward bend and emerged in the western Lotha area in Wokha district, and proceeds to the southern border of the district, it suddenly turns westward and then debouches the hills for the plains west of Koro village and then finally falls in the Dhansiri river of Assam valleys.
Doyang is not only important river for Wokha district alone but it is also equally an important river of Nagaland. In the valley along the Doyang terrace cultivation is being carried out successfully. Besides the Doyang Hydro Project is constructed in this river which is visible from many hilltop villages in the surrounding areas.
This Hydel projects has a large quantity of water impounded in a dam with a capacity of 3 X 25 MW and an estimated annual generation of 227 million units was commissioned on the 2nd week of July 2000. This project 75 MW Doyang Hydro Project is the only major hydro project located in Wokha District of Nagaland. The project was constructed, owned and run by North East Electricity Power Corporation (NEEPCO) whereas the Nagaland Department of Power is responsible for generation, transmission and distribution of power in the Stat. The power generated by Doyang is distributed among all seven North Eastern states with the major share of power specified to host stat. Doyang River has developed a 75 MW hydro project constructed, owned and operated by NEEPCO.
Nagaland is a state in the far north-eastern part of India bordering the state of Assam to the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam to the north, Burma to the east and Manipur to the south. The capital state of Nagaland is Kohima and the largest as well as the commercial city is Dimapur. Nagaland is the 16th state of the Indian Union and established on December 1, 1963. It is divided into eleven districts: Kohima, Phek, Mokokchung, Wokha, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mon, Dimapur, Kiphire, Longleng and Peren. The state as a whole is a largely mountainous state with agriculture being the most important economic activity in Nagaland. The principal crops include rice, corn, millets, pulses, tobacco, oilseeds, sugarcane, potatoes and fibres. Other economy boosters are forestry, cottage industries, insurance, real estate and tourism.
