What's New in Alexandria - Arlandria Plan
The Arlandria Plan, adopted in 2003, includes recommendations for intersection improvements, zoning changes, support for local businesses, streetscape and gateway improvements, and the expansion of Four Mile Run Park. The community has helped with the effort, by transforming a vacant parcel of land into the Four Mile Run Farmers' and Artisans Market, and renovating a vacant paint store into a multi-purpose community building.

Congress counted the votes and confirmed his victory on April 6th, 1789. And on the morning of April 16, 1789, Washington began the journey from his Mount Vernon home to New York City, then America's capital city. By around noon on April 16, 1789, Washington arrived in Old Town where he sat down for a (very) early dinner with the town's citizens at Wise's Tavern before continuing on his journey to New York where he would be sworn in at Federal Hall.

Exploring Your Small Farm Dream
Are you ready to become a farmer? The Central Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service have partnered up to help you fulfill your dream.
Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, and continuing weekly through November 1 at CLEDA, the six-week series, Exploring Your Small Farm Dream, will be offered.
Funded by a philanthropic investment from Keller Enterprises, LLC, the popular course is designed for beginning farmers or anyone who wants to own and manage a small farm for profit.
To learn more and register for this free, six-week course go to cenla.org/freshcentral/explore or contact Kinsie Rayburn at (318) 441-3408 or krayburn@cenla.org.
Exploring Your Small Farm Dream will help aspiring farmers learn what it takes to start and manage a small farming operation.
I was given the tools and resources I needed to get my small farm going, said previous participant Bill Floyd. The instruction was excellent and I met a great group of people.
The course will go through the aspects of not only what to grow, how to grow it and where to sell it, but it also addresses the fact that it's a business and you have to be profitable in order to stay in business and continue to live that dream, said Lee Weeks, course instructor and Operations Manager at Inglewood Farm.
We did a study that showed us $33 million worth of unprocessed fresh fruits and vegetable are consumed in Central Louisiana every year, said CLEDA Farm-To-Table Coordinator Kinsie Rayburn. However, we produce only $8 million worth, so there is a huge gap between what is consumed here and what is produced here.
The Exploring Your Small Farm Dream workshop series will build upon the momentum of the Central Louisiana Local Foods Initiative, a community effort that aims to strengthen Central Louisiana's local foods economy while increasing access to fresh foods for all residents of the region. The initiative was created in 2012 with a Challenge for a Healthier Louisiana Grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation and matching funding from The Rapides Foundation.
Having more farmers growing produce in central Louisiana means that residents not only have higher access to fresh, local produce but that the money residents are spending on local produce stays in the regional economy resulting in direct economic impact, said CLEDA President and CEO Jim Clinton.
Clinton also reminds us that, if each central Louisiana residents spent just $5 a week on locally produced goods that would add $91 million in new revenue to the region annually.
Topic areas include how to create a business plan for your farm, farm record keeping, how to grow crops, how to test your soil, how to know when do you plant and how to market your crops.
Early registration is recommended as demand far exceeded expectation during the previous session.
To learn more and register for this free six-week course go to cenla.org/freshcentral/explore or contact Kinsie Rayburn at (318) 441-3408 or krayburn@cenla.org. After course completion, participants will receive follow-up training and consulting as they launch their farming operations.
