B&O Railroad Museum Ellicott City, Maryland
The first railroad station in America in Ellicott City, Maryland, completed in 1830, was the terminus of the first thirteen miles of rail in America, built from Baltimore west as competition, successful it turned out, for the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal.
The B&O carried passengers to the station, and on west, until 31 December 1949 and its` successors, currently CSX, operated it as a freight station until the flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes in June of 1972. It has been operated as a museum since 1976 and has recently become part of the main B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore City.
The diorama/model in the former freight house shows the first thirteen miles of the B&O. It`s an amazing effort, constructed by the Mount Clare Chapter of the National Model Railroad Association and accurately represents a number of features along the Old Main Line; mills, iron works, viaducts, parts of West Baltimore, a good section of the Patapsco River and Ellicott City itself, formerly Ellicott`s Mills. While not part of the Old Main Line, the Thomas Viaduct, completed in 1835 and still carrying rail traffic, is also depicted.
No visit to Baltimore and environs, especially for history buffs and rail devotees, is complete without visits to both the B&O Railroad Museum, Ellicott City Station and the main museum, which includes rolling stock and train rides, in Baltimore. Information about both is on the website; borail.org
Ellicott City itself is rife with history and has been described as one of the most European villages in America. It features granite buildings, now mostly shops and restaurants along Main Street, part of the original National Road, now Maryland Route 144. It played a major part in the American Civil War, as did Maryland itself, being a border state with seriously divided loyalties. Have a look at Ellicott City`s website; ellicottcity.net

A CSX freight heads west past the B&O Railroad Museum, Ellicott City Station
Had this been prior to 1972, when Tropical Storm Agnes put the then Chessie freight station out of business, a similar train might have stopped to pick up and/or drop off freight here.
Prior to 31 December 1949, passengers, availing themselves of somewhat more luxurious accommodations, would have disembarked having arrived from Baltimore and points north, or climbed aboard headed to Brunswick, Frederick, Harper`s Ferry, Cumberland, Wheeling and other points west

B & O Railroad Museum - Baltimore, MD
Baltimore, MD - A visit to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The site is home to the first tracks laid for a railroad in the United States. The railroad's name described the ultimate route, connecting the Port of Baltimore with the Ohio River in then Wheeling, Virginia, now West Virginia. The rail service established a trade route from a port city to the nation's interior, allowing the flow of goods and passengers for the young nation. There are many examples of engines, locomotives, cars and all manner of railroad equipment in the museum site which comprises 40 acres. The first track was laid here in 1828.
The cornerstone was laid by Maryland resident Charles Carroll, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. Charles Carroll was a supporter of the creation of the railroad. He is known by how he signed the Declaration of Independence - he signed his name, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, so the King of England would hang the right man in case the revolution didn't succeed. His home in Annapolis is still standing on the grounds of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Ellicott City Train Station Maryland
The Ellicott City Station is the oldest remaining passenger train station in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. At the time of its construction in 1830, it was the terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line from Baltimore to Ellicott's Mills, Maryland and it incorporated features for the servicing of steam locomotives at the end of the 13 miles (21 km) run. The station, a National Historic Landmark, is now used as a museum.

Taking A Tour Of The B & O Railroad Museum
If Your A Railroad Fan, Taking A Tour Of The B & O Railroad Museum is a must stop while in Maryland. There is so much railroading history in this are for everyone to see.
Baltimore has a lot of history for everyone to experience, but for the railroad fans, it's the Baltimore And Ohio Railroad Museum on Pratt Street. While we were in Maryland for the holidays, this was one of our must see spots on the trip. In fact, this was the number 1 spot other than family.
There is so much to see at this location it would take several days to see and absorb everything. Both Debbie and I took many photos and videos while we were here. Like I state in the intro, there will be 2 to 3 videos to show what we saw here including several local model railroad club layouts that were on display during the holidays.
