Beer City USA's Underground Scene - Home Brewing in Asheville, NC - Made in the USA, Episode 20
Asheville, North Carolina is a gorgeous mountain town that runs on beer. Visitors can visit any number of commercial breweries, but what they don't get to see is the vibrant community of home brewing that feeds this town's hunger for hops.
We spent some time with a few home brewers to check out this hobby (read: obsession) and see if it's possible to cross over from a few kegs in your garage to the big time. Maybe you'll see these beers in your favorite restaurant one day.

There are over fifty craft-brewing companies in the picturesque community located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. The New Belgium Brewing Company, one of the countries largest craft brewers, chose Asheville as the location for it's East Coast brewery which opened in early 2016. The company offers free guided tours with opportunities for beer tasting along the way. A Visit To Asheville NC, (and some beer) | MOTM VLOG #47
This city had a shroud of mystery around it for us. Everyone we met had the same reaction to the mention of Asheville: “*GASP!* You HAVE to go to Asheville! You’ll love it!” We were told it was artsy, it was modern, it was laid-back, it was a college town, it was beautiful, it had the Biltmore Estate, it had tons of good shops and restaurants, it was a hippie town, it was progressive, and it was Beer City, USA.
We grabbed our bikes and found a parking spot about a mile outside of downtown. We rode in a ways before finding a place to lock up our bikes. We walked the streets, just noticing the people about, the colorful, earthy, high-end shops, the plethora of restaurant options. The art on the walls, an old bus turned into a hip little corner coffee shop. Like any city it had homeless people. It also had street musicians staked out in front of the cafes with the outdoor seating areas.
We walked the Pack Square Park with the county courthouse and City Hall, which is one of the Art Deco Masterpieces of Asheville. In 1943, World War II pilot Col. Robert Morgan was flying his Memphis Belle bomber on a nationwide tour to sell war bonds. On his way out of Asheville, he banked the craft 60 degrees and slipped it between the Courthhouse and the City Hall.
The next day we went to check out The Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore Estate is America's largest home, built by George Vanderbilt. It is an 8000-acre beautiful and grand estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC that many claim outshine many of the castles in Europe.
We had been told it was very beautiful. The drive into the estate entrance gate was gorgeous. Tickets were required to get close enough to SEE the house. We went into the Visitor/Ticket Center to see our options. When we learned it was going to be $65 per person to gain entry, we watched the free short info video of the history of the estate, and then we left. Maybe we will come back one day when we are a little less frugal.
We debated driving all the way out to the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. After the failed attempt to see the Biltmore Estate, we figured we should at least see something. We had been told by our friends RV Love that we should go and that it was BEAUTIFUL. We couldn’t help but wonder how a brewery could be beautiful….
Yes, you should go to Asheville. It is quite an experience. Like any city, it has tons to do, lots of great restaurants, and some interesting history. Some things will cost you a lot, but if you're vacationing on a budget there are definitely some cool places where you get a lot of bang for your buck. This one definitely had a unique vibe though - a little more laid back, a little more indie and artsy.

Farm Girl Visits the Biltmore Estate and Winery in Asheville North Carolina travels
Farm Girl and Exoman travel the state and enjoy wine and dining on a visit to The Biltmore in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. There were black bears, wild turkeys, ponds, streams and the French Broad River, so much to see. The trees were still in fall color. The staff were warm and welcoming in this, the largest home in North America. Strolling through the French Renaissance style home built in the late 19th century was whimsical the place is covered with stone and wood carvings, tapestries and paintings by the some of the worlds greatest artists of the period. A team of world class architects, engineers and contractors constructed this masterpiece over a six year period. Strolling through the majestic home out onto the breath taking loggia one can experience the splendor and opulence of the gilded age.
There was still time for a stroll through the wine cellar at the days end and up the stairs to attend the wine tasting. The Bistro restaurant, next to the winery was a good choice for dinner. After sampling the chardonnays, merlot, malbec and cabernet sauvignon wines Farm Girl and Exoman picked up a few bottles at the store but then had beers with dinner.

American Craft Beer Week
Nearly 2,000 small and independent breweries across the country are celebrating the growing popularity of craft beers. Highland Brewing Company helped put Asheville on that map as the first craft brewery in Western North Carolina. It opened in 1994. This morning, Brewmaster and Co-Owner, John Lyda showed News 13's Victoria Dunkle part of the process for turning out craft beer. Since that time we have seen the craft brew popularity grow here to the point of earning Asheville the title of Beer City U.S.A. American Craft Beer Week recognizes craft brewers and homebrewers. It is even congressionally sanctioned as the Mother of All Beer Weeks. Highland brewing company offers the chance to learn about various types of beers at its tasting room. You can learn more at highlandbrewing.com.

Liquor Tasting Bill
Beer city could be taking a turn toward liquor. Local legislators have proposed a bill that would allow customers to sample hard alcohol in mountain A.B.C. stores.
Asheville would be the first city in the state to do this. Buncombe county would be the test case for tastings inside A.B.C. stores. Quite a few other states allow it, but this would be a first for North Carolina.
Representative Tim Moffitt's office said they expect the bill to come up for a vote during the current session. If passed, it'll mean that companies could set up tastings in area stores, allowing each customer no more than a half an ounce of liquor per day.
Local distillers say this could be a big help in terms of marketing. When we do tastings in other states, there is a great acceptance or buy rate once they taste our products, they'll buy it instead of what they came into the store to buy, says Charlie Ball with Asheville Distilling Company.
The local Board of Alcohol Control is backing the bill, saying that a rise in sales would mean a rise in revenue for the county.
There's also another bill that's been proposed in Raleigh. If passed, it would allow distillers to sell their products on location. Right now, you can go on their tour, sample their alcohol, but you can't buy it from them. Instead you have to go to the nearest A.B.C. store, and hope they carry it.
