SOUTH AFRICA - Stellenbosch wine tour
Stellenbosch is perhaps the most famous wine-producing region in South Africa. It is located just east of Cape Town within the Western Cape. Cabernet Sauvignon is the region's most widely planted grape variety. Merlot, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also all grown throughout Stellenbosch

Winemaking, Cape Town
Gurjap loved the Cape's world-famous wines, while Radha watched in amusement as he attempted to learn the art of wine tasting.
Gurjap: I don't know about you, but I think tours can seem a bit impersonal, so when our journey took us to the Cape Winelands, we arranged a behind-the-scenes tour of a winery in Stellenbosch.
Rickety Bridge Winery has a long history of winemaking in this area. The Cape Winelands remind me of the English countryside, so green and lush.
Wynand, our guide, taught me the Three S's of tasting: swirl, smell and then sip. When I spluttered after my first try Radha teased me. It's three S's, Gurjap, she laughed, not four! Fortunately, I'm a fast learner, but with wine this good who wouldn't want more than just a little sip.

Gratitude. These last 6 weeks have been a whirlwind. I leave Cape Town tomorrow for my long trip back to Seattle, but I can confidently say I want to return. The last 2 weeks, have been incredible - we ventured to the Zeitz MOCAA, visited the Aquila Private Game Reserve, and experienced a magical Wine Tour in Stellenbosch... with the most amazing lifelong friends by my side.

Making Wine At The Oldest Winery In South Africa - Groot Constantia
Jeff Bradford visits Groot Constantia - The oldest Wine producing Estate in South Africa, creating award winning wines for 330 years. In this episode, you'll experience how wine is made in this part of the world. Subscribe to the adventure
About Groot Constantia:
If you haven’t heard about Groot Constantia, then it is my pleasure to introduce you to South Africa’s oldest winery. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t give some of the history about this estate. In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples and in 1685 he found a potential wine-growing area that had magnificent scenery situated behind Table Mountain. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product.
The estate was named Constantia after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today the winemaker, Boela Gerber and staff follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

Grootbos | Wine Tasting Tours in the Cape
SEE RATES:
WEBSITE:
WINE TOUR
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is nestled in the Western Cape surrounded by stunning wine pockets of the Overberg region where guests can explore sensory bliss as the red wine flows like velvet and the verdant pastures can be tasted in the fragrant white wines.
Grootbos proudly boasts only wine from the local area of the Overberg. By supporting these local and delicious wines we hope to create awareness on what this place has to offer. The wine routes through the Overberg region are not as popular as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and other wine routes around Cape Town but that is also half the charm. Rather enjoy a wine tour 'off the beaten track' that promises to be a memorable journey. From Grootbos you can visit the most Southern wine route in Africa and explore rustic destinations rife with natural adversities that elicit intense flavours in the wine. The wine connoisseurs of the Overberg region have orchestrated these adversities and intense flavours into a symphony of flavour that promises to seduce your senses.
Stanford is the closest of all the wine pockets and this Old Victorian town has a warm hospitality and good food to complement the sensational wine. Taste the rich history that began with the first Dutch settlers combined with the fragrant wisps of the Kleinriver and rumbling mountains. Hermanus is a well-known destination because of its superior land-based whale watching but few realise the Hemel-en-Aarde road is rife with quaint bistros, stunning views, delicious cuisine and exquisite wine. Then discover the Elim and Cape Agulhas wine route that boasts geographical significance as the southernmost wine route in Africa. Meander through verdant valleys with cows and villages lost in time only to come across wine farms set in a natural utopia. The severe natural adversities like the persistent south-easterly wind and the tumultuous clash of the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean prevent the upward growth of the vines so that the grapes elicit extreme flavours. The wine connoisseurs have taken on wine-making with the same ardour as the weathered sailors, with fierce determination and a gentle skill.
In South Africa wine is not just a drink, but a combination of art, culture and passion. Discover these qualities on a wine tour with Grootbos.
5 Cape Dutch Wine Estates to have lunch in Cape Town
Cape Dutch Wine Estates have this in common; good food, excellent wine and beautiful architecture. This makes them great venues for functions
We have chosen 5 Estates. It is by no means an exhaustive list. It is however, a good basis to start organising your time in the Cape. So let's introduce the 5 Estates.
1. Lanzerac
It is one of the oldest farms on the Stellenbosch area and was established in the 1700's.
It has been the trusted lunch venue for locals for many years and popular with tourists. Whether you want to stay over, get married, have lunch go for wine tasting or just have scones and tea. It is always be an enjoyable experience.
2. Boschendal
Whether you visit for a morning afternoon or for a full day, there are certainly lots to do at Boschendal. This could be anything from a picnic, swimming in a dam, trout fishing, or horse riding. You can even get married there. So a good place to stop for lunch.
3. Spier
With 4 restaurants and picnics on offer you will not go hungry. You may also want to combine it with a Segway tour. Check if there are any local artists performing at amphitheatre in the evening
3. Vergelegen
Favourite of many locals and tourists. It is also the oldest farm in the area. The first owner, Adrian, was the son of the first governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. Today the farm is well developed and their wines compete with the best in the world.
One attraction not to be missed is the lovely Camphor trees planted by Adrian, which is in front of the restaurant. The gardens are a must see and in December the hydrangeas are in bloom, which give an awesome purple picture.
Vergelegen is to be enjoyed by all ages. You can visit the wineries, or have picnic on the lawn, or have cheesecake in the Stables restaurant. There is also a more formal option of dining in the Camphors at Vergelegen restaurant.
4. Lourensford
The Lourensford Estate was once part of the Vergelegen Wine Estate. Today this wine making estate also farms with flowers and fruit. Be sure to visit the art studio, take a guided walk, do some mountain biking or take a tour of the gardens. Visit The Millhouse Kitchen for lunch. They only use locally produced ingredients. A great event is the weekly market where you can taste the Estate's wine and beer available as well as crafts and art.
Hopefully this list will give you some inspiration for when you are planning your own holiday.
