Colm Toibin at the Centre Culturel Irlandais May 2nd 2017
In Paris for the opening night of Le Testament de Marie at Théâtre de l’Odéon, the thrice Booker-prize nominee Colm Tóibín was at the Centre Culturel Irlandais. A great opportunity to hear him read from and discuss his striking portrait of Mary as well as his latest novel set in 1960s Ireland, Nora Webster, in which a mother pieces her life back together again following her husband’s death.
The Testament of Mary is a beautiful and daring work that addresses the crucifixion and the shaping of its legacy from the perspective of Jesus’ mother. Following Deborah Warner’s acclaimed theatrical productions in New York and London, la Comédie Française and the Théâtre de l’Odéon invited her to create a new French production which will be presented from 5 May to 3 June 2017 (see below).
Presented by Sinéad MacAodha, with Anna Gibson and Maggie Doyle.

'Debussy's music was so beautiful, so evocative and so French'

Influential French composer Claude Debussy wrote his music in the 19th and 20th centuries, but his work is still celebrated today. This year, France is marking the centenary of his death with a series of concerts. Irish pianist Thérèse Fahy is leading those performances. She sat down for a chat with FRANCE 24 about why Debussy was so radical, her own musical career, and whether classical music is too inaccessible.
You can catch the final performance of Ireland’s Tombeau to Debussy on October 26, 2018.
It’s at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, 5 Rue des Irlandais, 5ème at 7:30 pm.
The programme includes Debussy's Children’s Corner Suite and his dazzlingly virtuosic piece L’Isle Joyeuse.

Karol Wojtyla was ordained in Poland in 1946, about November 1946, and he was sent almost immediately to Rome to do his post-graduate studies to gain a doctorate at one of the pontificate universities in Rome. So he left Poland for the very first time in his life at that point in time and he came across Europe by train and came to Paris in November 1946 and he stayed here for a few nights. That was the very first time to come to Paris and to this particular building which is the College des Irlandais which at that stage had just begun to give hospitality to a small Polish community who had escaped from Dachau after the second world war and who hadn't gone back to Poland.

10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Father Declan Hurley, Chaplain of St Patrick's Chapel
He spent the summer of 1947 here in this building and it is very touching, I think, to think that in this chapel of St Patrick he would have come every day to celebrate the Eucharist, to pray and to nourish the faith that we now know was such a strong faith for so many years.

STORYLINE:
Many years before Karol Wojtyla became Pope John Paul II, the Pole visited and even lived for a short time in Paris at the Irish College, or College des Irlandais.
His trips here spanned more than three decades - from 1947 - 1977 - and his visits are still considered a sacred part of the school's history.
The Pope first stayed at the Irish College for a few nights just after the war in November 1946.
The school was already housing Polish immigrants who had been detainees in the Dachau concentration camp.
At the time the Pope was a student-priest and it was his first trip to Paris.
Less than a year later, he spent three months in the Irish College over the summer of 1947.
Father Hurley, Chaplain of St Patrick's Chapel located inside the College, says it gives him a special feeling knowing that the Pope would come every morning to his chapel and celebrate the Eucharist.
Over the next thirty years, the Pope would continue to visit the College while he was a priest, a bishop and then a cardinal.
Black and white photos of him are still kept by Father Hurley and they - along with plaques on the wall of the chapel - will keep the Pope's memory alive, and form a permanent memento of his ties to this small college.
