Living Faith in Our Social Context -
A Church of and for the Poor -
September 23, 2014
Presenter: Kenneth Himes, O.F.M.
From the first century through today, the Christian community has wrestled with the realities of the poor among us. Be it material or spiritual, voluntary or involuntary, relative or absolute poverty, many have argued that to be human is to be poor. This lecture explores how compassion for the poor reflects an acceptance of our own humanity and that of others, and is ultimately a key element of our journey to know Christ.
Cosponsored by The Church in the 21st Century Center, the School of Theology and Ministry,
and the Boston College Theology Department
Kenneth Himes, O.F.M., is associate professor of theology in the Boston College Theology Department. A Franciscan priest and moral theologian, he is the author of Christianity and the Political Order: Conflict, Cooptation, and Cooperation (Orbis Books, 2013), and Responses to 101 Questions on Catholic Social Teaching (Paulist Press, 2013).
John Winthrop & Puritan Justice CLIP (For Our Day: Covenant on the Land)

Church in the 21st Century Center at Boston College Promo
The Church in the 21st Century Center at Boston College seeks to be a catalyst and resource for the renewal of the Catholic Church in the United States by engaging critical issues facing the Catholic community. Drawing from both the Boston College community and others, its activities currently are focused on four challenges: handing on and sharing the Catholic faith, especially with younger Catholics; fostering relationships built on mutual trust and support among lay men and women, vowed religious, deacons, priests, and bishops; developing an approach to sexuality mindful of human experience and reflective of Catholic tradition; and advancing contemporary reflection on the Catholic intellectual tradition.
The Spirituality of Saint Paul: Following Jesus by Imitating Paul
Presenter: Rev. Frank J. Matera

The Spirituality of Saint Paul: Following Jesus by Imitating Paul
ANNUAL LECTURE IN HONOR OF RICHARD J. CLIFFORD, S.J.
Throughout his letters, Saint Paul encourages his converts to imitate him; for in him they have a model of what it means to follow Christ. The model of the Christian life Paul presents to his converts reveals a spirituality grounded in the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection, whereby believers are conformed to the crucified Christ and sanctified by God’s grace in Christ through the power of God’s Spirit.

Anne Hutchinson: Religious Dissenter
View Part I:
View Part II:
In the final segment of my lecture on Religious Freedom in Colonial New England, I tell the story of Anne Hutchinson, a religious dissenter in the Massachusetts Colony who challenged gender roles and the Puritan leadership by leading Bible studies, advocating antinomianism, and claiming to be able to see the elect. Like Roger Williams before her, Anne Hutchinson was exiled from Massachusetts. She followed Williams to Rhode Island with 60 of her followers, then went on to New Netherland, where she and her children were massacred by Indians.
