Here's Cavour 550 aircraft carrier | Italian aircraft carrier | the flagship of the Italian Navy
Italian aircraft carrier - The ship is designed to combine fixed wing V/STOL and helicopter air operations, command and control operations and the transport of military or civil personnel and heavy vehicles. The 134 m (440 ft), 2,800 m2 (30,000 sq ft) hangar space can double as a vehicle hold capable of holding up to 24 main battle tanks (typically Ariete) or many more lighter vehicles (50 Dardo IFV, 100+ Iveco LMV), and is fitted aft with access ramps rated to 70 tons, as well as two elevators rated up to 30 tons for aircraft. Cavour can also operate as landing platform helicopter, accommodating heavy transport helicopters (AgustaWestland UH-101A ASH) and 325 marines (91 more, on option).[8] The Cavour has a displacement of 27,900 tons but can reach more than 30,000 tons at full military capacity.[2]
It complements the Italian navy's other aircraft carrier, the Giuseppe Garibaldi.
The Italian Navy will replace its 16 Harriers with 15 (originally 22) Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II.[9] The F-35B schedule is uncertain, but it is planned to modify Cavour to support the F-35B by 2016.[10] Cavour will have room for ten F-35Bs in the hangar, and six more parked on deck.[9]
Construction
Cavour was laid down by Fincantieri in June 2001, and was launched from the Riva Trigoso shipyard in Sestri Levante, on 20 July 2004.[11] Sea trials began in December 2006, and she was officially commissioned 27 March 2008. Full operational capability (FOC) was reached 10 June 2009.
Service history
On 19 January 2010, Cavour was dispatched to Haiti as part of Operation White Crane, Italy's operation for 2010 Haiti earthquake relief.[12] This was the first mission of the aircraft carrier, where it supplemented international efforts to provide relief for the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.[13]

Artwork created by human robot partnership
(22 Nov 2017) LEADIN:
Italian scientists have created a robot that works with artists to create paintings in a combined human robot style.
The robot has been programmed so that no painting can be exactly recreated more than once - giving each work its own individual signature.
STORYLINE
Meet Busker the Robot – the latest artist on the block.
Developed in 2015, Busker has already tested its paintbrushes on hundreds of canvases.
His creator, Paolo Gallina is Professor of Applied Mechanics and Robotics at the University of Trieste in Italy.
Busker is able to paint using watercolours - and although it's not the first to achieve that - Gallina claims it is the first robot able to paint using Gouache opaques, another type of paint similar to watercolours.
Gallina says: The public is always attached to artisanal art. But it is also true that mankind has always tried to use the tools in his possession to communicate something different. This has always happened and it will always happen. Thirty thousand years ago, when the first cave paintings were made, you can already see the use of certain tools, if it hadn't been for the carbon obtained with fire, these paintings wouldn't exist.
Busker paints, but does not make decisions about what kind of paper or which colours will be used. The technology is used as an artists' tool - with humans making the decisions, from which paintbrush to which algorithm.
Lorenzo Scalera is PHD student who has been working on the research project since its conception.
He says: We start off from a digital image, so we have a picture or an image represented in pixels on the computer and we apply techniques, algorithms – some parts have already been developed, other we develop ourselves. What are these algorithms? They are a set of mathematical formulas that allow us to extract a specific part of the image that interests us. We have algorithms to extract the edges, algorithms to extract the darker zones, the details, or larger areas, the backgrounds that we want to colour or reproduce in a different way.
The idea is to create a combination of human and robotic art - with style signatures from both parties.
Gallina says: The style we try to adopt in many of our works, and it also depends on the subjects we are painting, is not to reproduce the hand of an artist or the typical style of a watercolour painter. We want to combine some of these elements with styles that can be introduced in the algorithm in an artificial way creating a new style, creating a new pictorial style.
Gallina continues: We chose in some works to fill certain areas of the watercolour piece with strokes, straight lines because a line is something the machine knows well, it is precise which is not the case with a person. We did that on purpose so that you can see a glimpse of the machine and repetitiveness in the works. And I think this is a new element that we came up with.
Variables such as the room temperature or the texture of the Gouache watercolour prepared make it impossible to recreate any painting twice, giving each work its own identity.
Gallina says: When an artist paints, he paints in a static manner, so he will never reproduce a piece identical to the previous one, but he will give a certain global idea. In the same way we wanted to introduce random elements in our works so they would be seen, not as realism paintings but as pieces that derive from the movement of an artist made of flesh and bones. We also introduced algorithms that can interpret and supply this added value.
Meanwhile Gallina hopes this project will open the dialogue on the relationship between humans and robots.
For now, Busker does not sign his pieces, the biological brains behind him do it for him .

Inauguration Ceremony of the Institute of Geometry and Physics - IGAP
ICTP and the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) will combine their strengths as international centres of physics and mathematics excellence to form a new institute dedicated to the two fields.
The Institute for Geometry and Physics (IGAP) will promote innovative and interdisciplinary research, highlighting the complementary and profound role that physics and mathematics contribute to each other. It will be based in Miramare, Trieste, in SISSA’s previous headquarters next to ICTP. The new structure strengthens the on-going collaboration between the two Institutes on these topics, boosting their strong capacity in mathematics and physics. It aims to create long-lasting training projects, with the ambition to become a reference point at the national and international level in the field.
“There is no development without a dialogue between physics and mathematics. Luckily, in Trieste this dialogue is already very active and the new Institute builds on this,” says SISSA Director Stefano Ruffo, adding, “It is a great opportunity in particular for students to meet scientists working in a difficult field which is constantly developing. The value of long-lasting programmes of seminars, workshops and informal interaction like the ones that will be offered here is well known worldwide.”
We are excited about the potential advances in knowledge that will result from this interdisciplinary partnership between ICTP and SISSA. It will not only enrich our overall research agenda but also add to the prestige of Trieste as Italy's city of knowledge, says ICTP Director Fernando Quevedo. Thanks to ICTP's extensive international research network, IGAP's influence will extend far beyond Italy, including to the developing countries that are at the core of ICTP's mission.
Embodying the interdisciplinary nature of IGAP will be the inaugural speaker at the 9 July ceremony, theoretical physicist and mathematician Cumrun Vafa, the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard University. Vafa sees the new institute as an important step in advancing our understanding of natural forces and laws. Einstein found that geometry can explain the gravitational force. In the past 50 years we have seen how true and how important that relation is: geometry implies physics and physics implies structures and geometry. Physics and geometry together have proved to be an amazingly powerful tool in answering puzzles in physics on the one hand and shedding light, at the same time, to deep questions of mathematics, he explains.
The inauguration ceremony for IGAP will take place on Monday 9 July at ICTP's Budinich Lecture Hall, starting at 16:30.

BCIT Italy & Austria International Field School Overview
In July 2013, the BCIT School of Business hosted a Summer Field School in Austria and Italy. This four week program helped students to understand the difference between two neighbouring countries, Austria and Italy, its people, rich culture, and business practices.
The program started in Vienna, Austria where students learned the history of Austria, why Austrians are different from Germans and took a day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia to understand the difference between western and eastern European life. Students were able to discover many interesting sites in Vienna including the Gasometer (city within a city) a series of large gas tanks converted into housing, offices, and retail. Students toured EVVA, a private company that implements sustainable business practices into its daily operations. The highlight of all company visits in Vienna was the most beautiful and innovative waste plant in the world -- the Spittelau thermal waste treatment plant. This company is a perfect example of combining technology, ecology, and art to produce one of the most important commodities: environmentally friendly heat. The group ended their time in Vienna with a very informative tour of the Austrian Parliament Building followed by a dinner in a tavern in town where they were served authentic Austrian food since 1740. On route to Italy, they stopped overnight in Graz, Austria where students learned about the architectural landmark of this city -- the Graz Museum of Art .
During the Italian portion of the trip, the students toured the cities of Vicenza, Verona, Bologna, Trieste, and Venice. Students were kept busy in Italy by attending classes, listening to guest lectures about Italian culture, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and visiting different companies and historical sites. Among them Bisazza Mosaico (glass mosaic producer), Zamperla (amusement rides), Illy Cafe (espresso machines), and Grappa (wine). The highlight for many students was visiting the Lamborghini plant and having the opportunity to test drive a car at over 280/kph. The students had guided tours of Vicenza where they learned about the incredible architecture of Andrea Palladio that goes back to 15th century. Students found it very interesting to find out why tourism is killing Venice and what the major problems this fantasy city faces these days.
