Pagosa Springs and Horseback Riding 2010
The second stop on our 2010 vacation were these two days we stayed in Pagosa Spings. Horses were Rio, Copper, and Freckles guided by Gary. Monsoon rains hit in the afternoon that you will see by the change in the San Juan river.
Colorado Trail Segment 24 by Horseback
Segment 24 is one of the most challenging segments for horses. Traveling on the current route for segment 23 at higher elevations it is difficult to find ways to get horses on to the trail. We exited the CT by riding down Stoney Pass Rd. into Silverton. Not a easy way to go after so many elevation changes on 23. We discovered Highland Mary Lakes trail out of Cunningham Gulch which connects to CDT and CT.You need to take the stock cutoff. Segment 24 is not for the faint of heart, or an unseasoned horse. As you will see in the video there are many potential hazards for horses, and if you have a injured horse after the descent on the switchbacks into the Elk Creek drainage, there is no way to get them out unless they are sound.
