The Edwin Carter Museum
Edwin Carter came to Breckenridge in 1868 seeking gold and fortune, but his goals changed when he saw the devastation mining had on the environment and local wildlife. Carter became a taxidermist and collected Rocky Mountain animal specimens in his museum, which doubled as his home. After his death, his collection of almost 3,300 specimens formed the nucleus of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The rehabilitated center honors the life and legacy of Carter, featuring interactive exhibits, a hands-on taxidermy workbench, a children's room and a theatre and is the recipient of several awards.

The Mysterious Edwin Carter and the Free Mason Connection
This multiple award-winning film was produced for the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance in 2009 on a limited budget. It is being shown at the renovated Edwin Carter Log Cabin Discovery Center in Breckenridge, CO.
Edwin Carter unwittingly became one of our nations most prominent naturalists. The documentary chronicles how a New York-born hunter and Colorado gold miner helped expose the environmental consequences of his trades. The Free Masons played an interesting role in his life and they saw to it that he was honored by lying in state at State Capitol in Denver and Breckenridge after he died...all in all very unusual.
Filmed in Colorado, New York and Washington State. Narrated by Dick Foley of the Brothers Four and scored and edited by Blue Note Productions, New York.

Breckenridge is a Colorado town at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range. It's known for its ski resort, year-round alpine activities and Gold Rush history. The Victorian core of this former mining town is preserved as the Breckenridge National Historic District, running primarily along Main Street, with colorfully painted buildings from the 1880s and '90s housing shops, galleries and restaurants.
Set at the foot of the marvelous Tenmile Range, Breck is a surviving mining town with a vibrant historic district. The down-to-earth vibe is a refreshing change from Colorado's glitzier resorts, and the family-friendly ski runs and gold-nugget history make it Summit County's most atmospheric destination. Regardless of whether it’s snow or shine, the BreckConnect Gondola up to the base of Peak 8 is where the fun begins.
The vast, hulking mountains here rise and fall, merging seamlessly into one another to present a perfect alpine backdrop. Laced with ski runs and hiking trails and stitched together with pine groves, they blaze gold in the morning, glow pink at dusk and fade into a deep shadowy blue as the sky pales then darkens, revealing endless stars best viewed from a frothing hot tub next to the roaring Blue River.
