Wine Tasting at Enoteca Bonfanti
Casorelle went to Larciano to sit down with Fabio of Enoteca Bonfanti and have a quick chat about wine with a focus on the wine of this region of Italy.
You can really see his passion for wine come through in this video. He is an excellent sommelier. Knowledgably enough for the wine expert yet fun and approachable for those just getting into wine.
Did we mention his restaurant makes excellent food as well? We hope you come visit us again!
Cheers! The Chianti Classico harvest gets underway
(10 Sep 2018) LEADIN:
This year's Chianti Classico grape harvest in Italy is shaping up well, according to local producers.
The region is also attracting outside investment, as well as tourists hoping to taste a selection of fine wines at this year's Chianti Classico Expo.
STORYLINE:
It is that time of the year again: Italian wine producers have started this year's grape harvest across the country with very promising forecasts.
According to the Italian farmer's organisation Coldiretti, the perfect grade of ripeness and sugar content will result in about in 47 million hectolitres nationally of excellent quality wine, thanks to the alternation of warmer and cooler weather that has characterised the 2018 season.
Here in Tuscany, the Chianti Classico Consortium expects Chianti Classico wine to make a substantial contribution to that total - with an expected 250,000 hectolitres - the equivalent of about 38,000 bottles and around €400 million in revenue.
It's a big relief for winemakers after a 30% decrease in production caused by last year's spring frost and prolonged summer drought.
Giovanni Manetti, President of Chianti Classico Consortium says:
At the moment, the forecast is excellent, bunches are beautiful, fresh, juicy, with the skin ripening at the same pace of sugar increase, so we expect grapes capable of producing great wines. However, we are still a few days away and we keep our fingers crossed, hoping that the weather will ensure beautiful days, sunny and dry.
The town of Greve in Chianti, known as the capital of Chianti Classico, has been hosting the annual Chianti Classico Expo since 1970. About 200 wineries are represented in the town's square, Piazza Matteotti.
During the four-day event producers meet with wine lovers, tourists and experts, offering wine tasting to anyone equipped with the traditional tulip shaped glass that can be bought before approaching any of the 66 stands in the square.
Mayor Paolo Sottani says: The format of this event establishes the purchase of a glass, with which you can make 5 tastings directly with the individual exhibitors – in the square there are nearly 70 stands – plus as many in the pavilion of the Chianti Classico Consortium. So there is the possibility of tasting wines from over 100 producers.
Chianti Classico territory's spreads between Florence and Siena and amounts to 71,800 hectares including eight municipalities: Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti and Radda in Chianti and parts of those of Barberino Val d'Elsa, Castelnuovo Berardenga, San Casciano Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.
Sottani stresses the importance of Greve's Expo, explaining that this is the only festival in the area were all eight towns are represented.
In the last few years, distributors, also at international level, have been coming here because there is a direct contact and the possibility of a one-to-one dialogue with the producers. Numbers are quite relevant, last year we had 15,000 thousand visitors and sold 7,000 glasses. They are very important numbers for this event that keeps growing in time. Unfortunately, we reached the limit in the square and there is no room left for more wineries, but the Expo gives prestige to the entire Chianti Classico area.
In the early 20th century, Chianti's production territory was no longer able to meet a growing national and foreign demand, so wine began to be made outside the Chianti zone delimited by Cosimo, and this too was called Chianti or Chianti-style wine.
