Ether For Anesthesia
The birth of surgical anesthesia took place on Oct 16, 1846 at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s surgical theater, now known as the Ether Dome. In 1946, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of this seminal event, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works produced a “how it’s made” film reel depicting the production and delivery of the then still used anesthetic for the public.

President Obama Wishes Massachusetts General Hospital a Happy 200th Birthday
On Friday, September 16, 2011, Massachusetts General Hospital opened its bicentennial celebration with a special message from President Barack Obama. More than 1,000 staff, friends and honored guests filled the ballroom at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to commemorate the hospital's 200th anniversary.
Personal remarks by keynote speaker and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, included reflections on his experience as an MGH patient over the past several decades.

Hypnotist Bernie's Exposition-Episode 48 with Dr. Asif
Asiful Islam, Ph.D, is a post doctoral researcher at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the research hospital of Harvard Medical School. He was skeptical about hypnosis at first, but after speaking with Priya, he decided to go on the show observe a session. He was impressed with the results, and decided to give a hypnosis try.
Asif have many research projects going on, and just like any post doctorial fellow in the medical field, he spend most of his time writing research grant proposals. He find this process extremely stressful, and feel as if his mind was being pulled in many different directions. He came on the show with the hopes that hypnosis can clear his mind from distraction. With his friends and colleague from Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School watching on live TV, this is another pivotal moment in hypnotherapy. Will Hypnotist Bernie be able pull this off?

Perhaps the best-known story in the history of Massachusetts General Hospital is the pivotal discovery and first use of ether as an anesthesia in 1846. But, that surgical first was only the beginning of a series of technological innovations that helped increase patient comfort and survivability during surgery. Warren Zapol, Emeritus Anesthetist-in-Chief of MGH, discusses how the discovery of ether was only the start in a series of critical care developments.
