Yared, Underground Churches in Ethiopia and Miracles!
This week I'm with a classmate of mine from my doctoral class. Yared is originally from Ethiopia and during Communist occupation he helped several underground Christian churches in Ethiopia. Recently, the leader of the country has converted from Islam to Christianity after having a vision of Jesus. Now churches are coming out from underground. Yared is about to go back to assist these churches. He has powerful things to say about the miracles Jesus is doing in Ethiopia. This touched me and I hope it touches you too.
Tameru Zegeye - The 'Miracle Man' of Ethiopia
Tameru Zegeye - an Ethiopian athlete who grew up in the mountainous region of Welo has attempted to set a new World Record for the 'Longest Distance Traveled whilst balanced on crutches' (Hands).
On April 14th, 2013 a crowd of nearly 20 friends and family gathered to witness Tameru cover over 75 metres using just his hands and crutches down the track of the National Stadium in downtown Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has a deep tradition for running and to pay homage to the country's athletes, Tameru's World Record was witnessed by Mohammed Aman - Olympic runner and 800m Diamond League Champion - who acted as the World Record's adjudicator.
Other judges included Keith Bowers of the BBC, Natalie Miller VP of Africa for Operation Smile (NGO for people with disabilities) and Hannah Gibson, Country Director for Jhpiego (International NGO in maternal and child health).
Tameru has an Incredible story: He was born disabled and could not walk at all for the first 15 years of his life. After a chance encounter in a church with a doctor he was provided free surgery and eventually felt empowered to start and finish high school, learn English and graduate from college with a degree in Tourism. Today, Tameru's own persistence, strength and hard work has guided him to the world of disabled sports and with this most recent stunt he believes he will be able to help and inspire other disabled athletes worldwide to realize their abilities and self worth.
Just months ago Tameru was struggling to make ends meet but always believed that he would achieve great things with his stunt skills. He trained daily for hours and carried on through his struggles - and as a result he has been hired by Ethiopia-based Circus group 'Debre Berhan' and will soon be achieving yet another dream of his - to travel for the first time outside of Ethiopia with the Circus on a tour to Sweden.
The next dream to aim for is - to one day perform and travel with Cirque Du Soleil Circus.

Ethiopia’s Chapel in the Sky
If churches were assessed by their risk factor, Abuna Yemata Guh would be our new Sistine Chapel. Perched 650 feet above a steep cliff in Northern Ethiopia, visitors face a 45-minute climb up the cliff’s vertical face in order to access the precariously positioned church. Dating back to the 5th century, history has it that its founder Father Yemata built the chapel to be closer to heavenly spirits; however, others claim it was a strategic move to avoid his enemies.

A day in Lalibela, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's beating heart. The churches are said to have been carved by King Lalibela, and the locals believe he was helped by angels. The Church of St George is the most popular one, and was hewn/carved out of a single gigantic rock. Enjoy this Ethiopia Travel Vlog, and subscribe for more vlogs from Ethiopia. Travel Ethiopia - Lalibela, Axum, Gondar
In November 2017, I went to Ethiopia with my sister. This is second part of our amazing trip that took us around the North of Ethiopia, to Addis Ababa, Gondar, Axum and last but not least Lalibela.
For me, the highlight of this cultural tour was visiting the churches carved out of rocks in Lalibela, such incredible monuments! The story goes that they were carved out by Ethiopian angels around the 13th century, taking anywhere from 20 to 200 years to finish! The names of the curches are supposed to symbolically represent Jerusalem.

Lalibela (Ethiopia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Lalibela in Ethiopia.
In the mountainous highlands of Ethiopia lies an extraordinary treasure of the history of mankind, the eleven rock churches of Lalibela. In the thirteenth century the famous Amhara sovereign, King Lalibela, decided to establish a new Jerusalem in his kingdom. Unique in their construction, the rock churches are among the most little-known miracles of the world, well disguised in the red tuff rock. The world redeemer church of the House Of The Holy Saviour is situated at the highest point of the steep Lasta Mountains. The interior of the Rock Church looks like a fully furnished basilica with a narthex, nave, two aisles and a dome above the sanctuary. Paintings of biblical motifs and stone ornaments adorn both columns and walls. The external pathways are narrow and difficult to negotiate and in each small niche live priests and monks who tend to the churches. The various caves and chapels each have a name such as Adam’s Tomb and other biblical names. According to legend, to replace the exhausted stonemasons, God Himself sent hard working angels to continue the work throughout the night, thus helping to create the new Jerusalem in Lalibela!

Lalibela, Ethiopia (ላሊበላ) - Tour of the Incredible Rock Churches!
Lalibela, Ethiopia (ላሊበላ) is home to the incredible rock churches of Lalibela, carved from single blocks of stone. Here's my blog:
When I traveled to Ethiopia, I first stayed in Addis Ababa. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get to Lalibela, a destination I had dreamed of visiting, because I didn't really have the time to take the bus, and I didn't think I could afford the flight. But one day, I decided to drop by the Ethiopian Airlines office in downtown Addis, and they gave me a quote for a roundtrip flight to Lalibela at just over $100. I took it, and I'm so glad I was able to visit this incredible little town.
Lalibela, Ethiopia (ላሊበላ) is one of the most important and holy cities in all of Ethiopia for followers of the Ethiopian orthodox church. Under control of King Lalibela, the goal was to turn the small town into a the second Jerusalem. Building rock churches and setting his holy city up in the same design and layout as that of Jerusalem, the King aimed to make his capital city a spiritual homeland.
The churches of Lalibela are on the list of UNESCO world heritage sites, with 11 of the churches qualifying. When you buy an entrance ticket, you can then tour all 11 of the churches. Many of them are connected and in there are three main clusters of churches. The first and ultimately most important of the churches in Lalibela (and show first in this video) is the Church of Saint George. This is the best preserved and it stands all alone, carved into the giant red stone. When I was there, it was a good morning because there was a small ceremony going on, and lots of local Ethiopian pilgrims had come to pay respect and worship at the church. To get down to the bottom of the church there's only a single entrance, through a trench leading to the bottom.
After walking around the Church of Saint George we proceeded on to the other churches of Lalibela including the House of Golgotha, House of Emanuel, and the House of the Saviour of the World, all of which were incredibly stunning. One of the most amazing aspects of the churches is that they are rock hewn, cut from single blocks of stone, and literally carved out by hand. So the builders had to begin from the roof, carving down until they had the shape of a church, and then start carving the church out to create a structure that could be used. After the construction of the rock churches of Lalibela, they were then decorated and painted with beautiful colors. Seeing the churches is such an impressive site!
If you have the chance to visit Ethiopia, definitely make a point to stop by the rock churches of Lalibela, especially if you enjoy either history or architecture. The attractions are still no overcrowded with foreign tourists, and mostly cater to local Ethiopian pilgrims.
