Travel Binge South Africa Weekend Trip
Travel Binge: Weekend Trip To South Africa.
We start out arriving in the evening into Johannesburg.we are staying nearby at the Airport Game Lodge. This is on a nice piece of land where animals like ostriches and gazelle graze and play nearby, easily viewable from ones room.. . A casino with a mall and food court is a short 10 min drive away and hotel is happy to transfer you there and pick you up for a small fee. The hotel arranged a driver and off we went on the hour or so drive to Lion Park. When we first arrived the lion cubs were being feed so we walked around the caged area.. Normally time is limited with the lion cubs to about 15 min however being there early with no crowd we spent about double that time.. If you couldn't tell from my sniffles, yes I am allergic to cats, even with two Benadryl I still muster on and manage. So yes if you are allergic to house cats might have to rethink getting that lion as they will make you sneeze, but boy are they cute. From there it was back into the vehicle to enter through the gates into the preserve, where animals from full grown lions to zebras and cheetahs roam free (separate areas divided by fences of course. Depending how you drive the route takes about 15 mins and is very much worth it as you can get right next to the animals.
After leaving the Lion Park it was straight to the airport were we planned to hop on a 2 hr flight to cape town. A lot of planes were cancelled including ours and we were in trouble. We had already booked our great white shark cage diving tour, my second and Ezras first, and due to the short time we had allotted ourselves for this trip it was imperative we made it to cape town. Next course of action to the rental cars. the first response from the rental agent was im sorry we are out of cars, and on that note it seemed like all our laid out planes and time schedule was out the window. But fear not we explained our situation and asked if she could check again, 20 min later poof she found us a car. It didnt mater we were back on track, cape town here we come. What was initially thought to take around 10 hrs was much more like 14 hrs due to road construction several times that added about 20 mins each. Few things to know, yes USA driver license can be used to rent a car in South Africa. Something interesting is that when prior to passing someone you flash your lights, they slow a lil you pass and they flash back to say thank you or so we were told. very pleasant. Lots of open road. Side note the rental agency also stated that each ticket is a 220 rand or about $25 US fine per ticket but no points or anything. Back to the long unexpected road trip was actually nice the 1200 and some odd KM it was. Absolutely pitch black at night and the stars were unlike anywhere else in the world, it looked like i was back at the planetarium. We took shifts driving, killed a ton of bugs with our Hyundai. We almost ran out of gas once, followed gps off an exit to one station that was no longer there so back on expressway and with our gas light on managed to find one. As you arrive into cape town its more mountainous than one would expect. We arrived at our hotel around 3 am and had a 6 am wake up call to be on the road, for great white shark cage diving was at 9 and Gansbaai , where shark alley is located is about a 2 hour drive. Once there you go over safety and your off. The cage floats next to the boat you go down in, fish are thrown out in front of the cage and pulled towards it when a great white gets close. The ultimate goal is to get the great white to thrash on or near the cage for amazing photos. A underwater camera is a must. While the swells or waves don't look big they do toss the boat and they are. Few people got sea sick. Might be the waves or the water is being chummed so some does get in mouth as your in the water. All in all great experience, highly recommend the company, would go back for a third time. we head to Table mountain and take cable car up. Well worth the visit. We check out a lil of the night life but is dead on a Sunday. Next morning it is off to Simontown some 30 mins from Cape Town to see the penguins. Very nice lil town can also get here by train along the coast, but after doing both the rental car is much better choice. There are a lot of hand crafted items, wood carved statues of animals, etc all hand made. Highly recommend buying these items as for some its their only source of income. After about an hour here it was back to cape town to catch the ferry to Robin Island. I recommend buying tickets in advance on computer as they do tend to fill up quick. Very informative and humbling tour. After the tour it was a short 25 min ferry ride back to cape town.We arrived at our hotel, in the afternoon and had just enough time to shower and catch a three hour nap before heading to airport for our evening flight home to the states.

There are three layers of functionality to Komoot. Pre ride planning, during ride navigation and recording, either using the phone app or synched to your head unit, and then post ride, uploading photos, etc.
Given that I’m not on a bike and I haven’t been for a ride yet, let’s start with planning. While you can plot and adjust routes on the fly using your smartphone app, for in depth route planning the desktop version gives you a bit more space and a few additional functions.
First, you’ve got to create an account. As I said, it’s free, although you can choose to purchase maps for offline use - more on that later.
The first screen you see is your feed, with a log of your rides, or other people’s who you’ve chosen to follow. More on that later too. For now, let’s go to the route planner screen.
If you enjoyed this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends. ????

A Traditional south African Braai
Episode 5 of my South African solo adventure !
I’m finally ready to pack up all my things and get on the road ! but not before I finish my week off with a traditional south African Braai ( aka BBQ) I head back to my dear friend Rob and families home ( the people who picked me up from the airport and stayed with first day) I was greeted by his lovely family and his closest friends. I had bought a few outfits when my bags didn’t arrive so I cleaned up a bit for the occasion. The night was full of great food, wonderful company and a wee little whiskey n wine. It was the perfect way to end my time in Capetown…. Or so I thought it was the end….

♦ South African Airways is the state-owned flag carrier of South Africa. Headquartered in Airways Park at O.R Tambo International Airport, the airline operates a hub-and-spoke network, linking over 40 local and international destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania from its base at O. The carrier joined Star Alliance in April 2006, the first African carrier to sign with one of the three airline alliances.
South African Airways is headquartered in Airways Park on the grounds of OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. The building was developed by Stauch Vorster Architects. South African Airways moved its head office from Durban to Rand Airport in Germiston on 1 July 1935. Before the head office moved to its current location, the airline's head office was in the Airways Towers in Johannesburg.
