We decided to brew this beer after Rich and Dan visited Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of the Kölsch style. They loved the subtlety of the flavor and appreciated the craftsmanship required to make a beer like this consistent and good. We were on the lookout for a new summer seasonal at the time and the Kölsch, with its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, seemed like a perfect fit.
Description
Our version of the traditional German Kölsch-style ale. This beer, which is light and refreshing, appears to resemble a lager rather than an ale. The Kölsch style is a testimony to the broad spectrum of characteristics an ale can produce, as well as the brewer's art. The body is soft and delicate with a dry, crisp finish.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: straw-gold with bubbly white head
Aroma: lightly sweet, faint wheat
Mouth feel: delicate body
Taste: crisp, lemon-y, some bitterness
Finish: dry, crisp
1986: The Beginning
It all started with three friends who shared a love of beer. College classmates Rich Doyle and Dan Kenary were passionate about beer, but weren't able find what they were looking for at their local pubs. While traveling in Europe after college, they drank many diverse, fresh, local beers and experienced firsthand the wonderful beer culture that existed just across the pond.
When they returned to Boston they decided that if they couldn't buy the beer they wanted then they would have to brew it themselves - or start a brewery and hire someone who could brew it. So that's what they did. Rich and Dan teamed up with George Ligetti, hired a brewer, and in 1986 the Harpoon Brewery was incorporated.
Harpoon was granted Brewing Permit #001 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts because it was the first brewery to commercially brew and bottle beer in Boston in more than 25 years.
And that, friends, was the beginning of Harpoon...
1987: Harpoon Ale is introduced
Rich, Dan, and Russ Heissner (our very first brewer) started formulating the recipe for Harpoon Ale in the summer of 1986. Friends and family were the lucky (and, at times, unlucky) quality control team through many months of test batches. Finally, in June of 1987 the original Harpoon Ale was brewed and delivered to Harpoon's first accounts, the Sevens Ale House on Charles Street and Doyle's Café in Jamaica Plain.
1988: Harpoon Winter Warmer is introduced first seasonal ever in New England
Harpoon Winter Warmer was the first craft beer seasonal brewed in New England. Though at first people thought it was a little strange that we brewed a beer with spices in it - namely cinnamon and nutmeg - it quickly became a New England favorite and is our most anticipated seasonal.
1990: First Harpoon Octoberfest festival at the brewery
When we decided to throw the first Harpoon Octoberfest at the brewery, it was considered a bit of a Hail Mary pass; times were tough and it wasn't clear that Harpoon would be in business another year. They had always wanted to host a festival at the brewery as an ode to the great Munich fall festival, so they thought this might be one last hurrah. In 1990, the first Harpoon Octoberfest took place at Harpoon in Boston. Much to the surprise and delight of Rich and the 5 other employees at the time, when the gates to the brewery opened for the festival, the crowds rolled in. In fact, there were so many people (around 2,000), Harpooners had to call family members to come help pour beer!
These days, tens of thousands of people now join us to celebrate Harpoon Octoberfest in Boston and Windsor each year. We celebrate with oompah bands, Bavarian fare, and barrels upon barrels of fresh Harpoon beer! Prosit!

Harpoon IPA: The Art of Bottling Beer
What started as a summer seasonal for us 25 years ago has turned into the beloved go-to IPA.
When we refreshed the label in 2016, our team had some fun with the change in the form of four, never-before-seen videos titled, “Looks Change, Friends Don’t.” For one reason or another we didn’t release them, but decided that in honor of IPA Day, the world should see them!
Harpoon UFO Big Squeeze Shandy The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer along with Diddy have came from Area 51 where they spotted a UFO! Harpoon's UFO Big Squeeze Shandy, that is!
Brewed by: Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall Massachusetts, United States
When we first started thinking of a UFO summer seasonal, we knew we had our work cut out for us. We loaded up the vans for the beach and spent days researching every combination of fresh fruit juice and beer we could think of until we discovered a combination that made our decision easy. Made with real grapefruit juice.

Harpoon St. Patrick's Day Festival
So, we make beer. In South Boston. We decided years ago that limiting St. Patrick’s Day to just one day didn’t make any sense. Let’s face it, cabin fever can wreak havoc on New England winters, and come March we need a reason to celebrate. So come down for a visit and start the season with Harpoon at the Harpoon St. Patrick’s Festival!

B-ROLL ALL DAY | Boston, Massachusetts
DAY THREE of my secret shoot in Boston we head out for a non-stop day of b-roll. If you aren't familiar with the term b-roll, that is the extra footage captured to enrich the story you're telling and to have greater flexibility when editing.
B-roll is everything! We shot for about three hours in the morning, had lunch and beers at Harpoon Brewery and then drove 1 hour south to the smallest state in America, Rhode Island.
While in Providence we also got a few hours of b-roll before heading for dinner and more beers at Union Station Brewery. I have heard very good things about this brewery so why not?

REEL Innovators: Harpoon Brewery, Part 3
Building a company is tough and growing it to almost 200 people in two states while being heralded as the 8th largest craft beer in the U.S. is no small achievement. Hear from Dan and Rich how important the Brewer is to their business and what THEY do every year to keep their employees engaged! Enjoy!
Harpoon Brewer Tom Graham talks about Vermont Spruce Tip Ale
The 100 Barrel Series celebrates the brewing talents and creativity of Harpoon Brewers.
Vermont Spruce Tip Ale, brewed by Harpoon brewer Tom Graham, is a showcase for a traditional yet seldom used brewing ingredient: spruce tips. Harvested at their tender, ripe, bright green peak in Downer State Forest, Vermont, these spruce tips impart citrus, pine, spice, herbal and earthy notes. A host of malts, a hint of roasted barley and generous use of Chinook hops complement the unique spruce flavor.
We'd like to thank the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and all of the many great volunteers that helped us with this unusual harvest.
Enjoy this beer with friends and family at any celebration or feast.

UFO Hefeweizen Beer The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Brewed by: Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall Massachusetts, United States
Beer Advocate
BA Score: 78
The Bros: 83
Style: American Pale Wheat Ale
ABV: 4.80%
Availability: Year-round. bottle (513), on-tap (65)
Notes:
UFO Hefeweizen is an American unfiltered wheat beer. Perhaps UFO's initial sensory perception is also its most prominent: a cloudy golden color and a dense, frothy head. The yeast, which has not been filtered out, accounts for the cloudiness of UFO. Wheat malt tends to create a larger head than barley malt, the cereal grain most often used in brewing. When served in a traditional wheat beer glass with a lemon, UFO presents an appealing and distinctive visual image.
The aroma has a faint but clear citrus-like character. This is produced by the special yeast and accounts for the Bavarian tradition of serving hefeweizens with a lemon. The lemon accentuates the yeast's fruity, tart fragrance. UFO has a soft mouthfeel and a refreshing, light body. The wheat malts and subtle hopping give the beer a mild, delicate flavor. UFO has a clean finish. Unlike some imported hefeweizens, UFO does not have the spicy, tropical flavors typical of European-brewed style. 19 IBU

UFO (Un-Filtered Offering) Hefeweizen is an American style un-filtered wheat beer. Traditionally served with a lemon to complement the citrus taste yielded from the yeast.
We started brewing UFO Hefeweizen in 1998 because it was a style that our brewers had enjoyed while visiting the Pacific Northwest, but there weren't any great interpretations being brewed locally in Boston.
Description
UFO Hefeweizen, an American wheat beer, pours a cloudy, golden color with a dense, frothy head. Because it is unfiltered, the yeast accounts for the cloudiness of the pour as well as a faint but clear citrus-like character. We serve UFO Hefeweizen with a wedge of lemon to complement its fruity, tart fragrance.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: hazy, golden yellow, fine foamy head
Aroma: clean citrus, crackery
Mouth feel: light bodied, never thin
Taste: tart wheat, sweet malt
Finish: quenching, refreshing
