Awash Park (Ethiopia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Awash Park in Ethiopia.
Located between Addis Abeba and Djibouti is Ethiopia’s oldest national park, the Awash, a natural landscape with protected fauna. It measures eight hundred and fifty square kilometres and is located nine hundred metres above sea level. The enclosed area of the Awash Falls Lodge looks like a small village of the Afar tribe, with a large gate and small huts that are covered with the grass of the savannah. The view of the waterfalls of the River Awash is a wonderful spectacle, right outside the huts. A number of oryx antelopes roam proudly across the savannah beneath the scorching hot sun, continuously in search of food, and warthogs make their way through the park’s high grass and acacia bushes. The unexpected natural paradise of the Filwoha Hot Springs originated due to the nearby extinct Fantale Volcano. The crystal clear turquoise blue water reaches up to forty degrees centigrade and is used by the locals for both drinking and bathing. The Awash National Park may not contain the rich fauna to be found in other parts of Africa but for Ethiopia it is a necessity for the conservation of nature.

Animals (Donkeys) in Agriculture and Transport
The ancestors of the modern donkey are the Nubian and Somalian subspecies of African wild ass. Remains of domestic donkeys dating to the fourth millennium BC have been found in Ma'adi in Lower Egypt, and it is believed that the domestication of the donkey was accomplished long after the domestication of cattle, sheep and goats in the seventh and eighth millennia BC. Donkeys were probably first domesticated by pastoral people in Nubia, and they supplanted the ox as the chief pack animal of that culture. The domestication of donkeys served to increase the mobility of pastoral cultures, having the advantage over ruminants of not needing time to chew their cud, and were vital in the development of long-distance trade across Egypt. In the Dynasty IV era of Egypt, between 2675 and 2565 BC, wealthy members of society were known to own over 1,000 donkeys, employed in agriculture, as dairy and meat animals and as pack animals. In 2003, the tomb of either King Narmer or King Hor-Aha (two of the first Egyptian pharaohs) was excavated and the skeletons of ten donkeys were found buried in a manner usually used with high ranking humans. These burials show the importance of donkeys to the early Egyptian state and its ruler.By the end of the fourth millennium BC, the donkey had spread to Southwest Asia, and the main breeding center had shifted to Mesopotamia by 1800 BC. The breeding of large, white riding asses made Damascus famous, while Syrian breeders developed at least three other breeds, including one preferred by women for its easy gait. The Muscat or Yemen ass was developed in Arabia. By the second millennium BC, the donkey was brought to Europe, possibly at the same time as viticulture was introduced, as the donkey is associated with the Syrian god of wine, Dionysus. Greeks spread both of these to many of their colonies, including those in what are now Italy, France and Spain; Romans dispersed them throughout their empire.

Lucy's Legacy: The Hidden Treasure of Ethiopia
Lucy's Legacy: The Hidden Treasure of Ethiopia exhibit opens to the public on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California.
Lucy's Legacy gives visitors the opportunity to further their understanding and place in the human family. Discovered in the late 20th century in Ethiopia, Lucy is the oldest and most complete adult fossil of a human ancestor that has been found in Africa to date. Although Lucy is only 40% complete, her species provides a likely evolutionary link to the homo genus from which human beings evolved. The discovery of Lucy not only provided this link, but also gives scientists a visible example of just how evolution and its effects can be traced in one specimen.

Ethiopia's Royal Treasures Displayed by Military Junta | February 1978
February 1978.
Footage of treasures associated with the reign of the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie put on display at the Jubilee Palace in Addis Ababa.
There are shots of the Treasure Room, the State Reception Room, the Drawing Room in which the Emperor received ambassadors, Crowns worn by the Emperor and Empress Lauditu, the Emperor's Orb and the Emperor's Coronation Throne.
The Jubilee Palace had been built in 1955 to celebrate a quarter of a century of Selassie's reign.
The Provisional Military Government of Socialist Ethiopia granted access to the media to have the treasures displayed not as a spectacle, but as a lesson on what they perceived as the profligate lifestyle of a monarch who ruled over an impoverished and undeveloped country.
Footage: Reuters News Archive.
Music: Man Yemeramer (St. Michael's Homiliary) by Alèmu Aga.
Wild Coffee - Saving Southwest Ethiopia's Mountain Rainforest WCC-PFM Project
The film follows the fortunes of two people and their communities in southwest Ethiopia involved in the Wild Coffee Conservation by Participatory Forest Management Project. This seeks to protect the rainforest and its precious genetic resources from deforestation whilst making sure that local people can earn a living from some of the non-timber forest products such as coffee and honey to be found in the forest. From picking the wild coffee cherries to finally getting it to market for a record price, the film shows the challenges they face, the beauty of the forest and how participatory forest management works.

Human Origin - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Part 9 (Travel Documentary in Urdu Hindi)
The most fascinating part of my trip was to Addis Ababa. In their museum, they have displayed Lucy. Several hundred pieces of bone fossils representing 40 percent of the skeleton of a female of the hominin species Australopithecus afarensis. In Ethiopia, the assembly is also known as Dinkinesh, which means you are marvelous in the Amharic language. Lucy was discovered in 1974 in Africa, near the village Hadar in the Awash Valley of the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia near Addis Ababa.
The Lucy specimen is an early australopithecine and is dated to about 3.2 million years ago. The skeleton presents a small skull akin to that of non-hominin apes, plus evidence of a walking-gait that was bipedal and upright, akin to that of humans (and other hominins); this combination supports the view of human evolution that bipedalism preceded increase in brain size. A 2016 study proposes that Australopithecus afarensis was also to a large extent tree-dwelling, though the extent of this is debated.
Lucy acquired her name from the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by The Beatles, which was played loudly and repeatedly in the expedition camp all evening after the excavation team's first day of work on the recovery site. After public announcement of the discovery, Lucy captured much public interest, becoming a household name at the time.
Lucy became famous worldwide. Beginning in 2007, the fossil assembly and associated artifacts were exhibited publicly in an extended six-year tour of the United States; the exhibition was called Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia. There was discussion of the risks of damage to the unique fossils, and other museums preferred to display casts of the fossil assembly. The original fossils were returned to Ethiopia in 2013, and subsequent exhibitions have used casts.
