The new Historic Fairy Caves Tour is a 40 minute guided walking tour and is appropriate for most fitness levels. This tour leads you on a quarter-mile-long underground stroll through hidden regions, some of which were only recently excavated.
Discovered in the 1950's, these areas were not previously accessible except to a few hardy cavers willing to crawl and wiggle through them.
Two years in the making, close to 1000 tons of rocky debris were removed by hand with buckets and wheelbarrows to create this amazing cave tour. You'll see highly-decorated rooms and even a section of underground canyon with fifty foot ceilings.
In 1897 the Fairy Caves were one of the first caves in the U.S. to have electric lighting installed. Today's cave tour includes a historic lighting section called History Lane, which is illuminated with replica Edison and Marconi-style light bulbs. You will experience a portion of the Fairy Caves as a visitor would have viewed them over 100 years ago.
Highlights of the tour include: •The Cloud Room with a subaqueous calcite ceiling
•The Head Office, where deeply penetrating tree roots are visible
•The Eternal Towers underground canyon
•A trip through the Darrow Tunnel, which took three years to build, starting in 1897
•Briefly exit the tunnel to visit Exclamation Point, with panoramic views of Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Canyon and the Colorado River
•The Pendant Room with its bulbous formations, carved by air and water
•History Lane historical lighting section, with lighting design based upon Glenwood Springs Historical Society archival photographs
•A candle-lit side trip into the Back Passage Room
•The magnificent Register Room with it's brilliantly-rich saturated colors created by interaction with hot springs waters
•The Reflection Room with formation-reflecting pools reflecting stalactites, stalagmites and soda straw formations
•Views of Jam Crack Passage with rich colors, popcorn-covered stalactites, and beautiful flowstone
Accessibility
thumbnail •This is a walking tour designed for persons wearing regular street clothing and street shoes. As in our other cave tour, flip-flops are not recommended
•The packed fine pea-gravel floors are generally level, though there is one very gradual short slope with a handrail
•There is one short section containing two sets of 9 steps with a connecting level platform
•Passageways between cave rooms average approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide
•There are three narrow sections (smallest = 25 inch or 63 centimeters, only at shoulder height) which take only a brief second to step through
•There is one reduced headroom of 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) portion which is well-lit and requires briefly ducking your head underneath it
•80+ year old visitors with canes have walked this tour without difficulties
Hanging Lake Trail - Glenwood Springs Colorado
Hanging Lake is a geologic wonder and is popular with travelers for its awe-inspiring beauty. Suspended on the edge of Glenwood Canyon's cliffs, the clear turquoise lake and the waterfalls that spill into it are a breathtaking sight after the rigorous uphill climb. This precious natural wonder is one we all must work together to protect by respecting the rules.
Lookout Mountain - Glenwood Springs, Co
If your in town on 8th street head east until it dead ends, this is where Boy Scout Trail begins. This hiker-mt bike friendly trail climbs 3 miles up the mountain and dead ends into Lookout Mt Park trail which takes you to the top after another mile or so. The park at the top has campsites with fire pits, picnic tables and an old historic outhouse. The best view of the city and valley is just west from the top of the park by the lower radio tower. Great day hike or ride i would recommend to anyone living in or just visiting the area. 2,000 ft + climb, top elevation around 8,000 ft.

New Bike Path Open
With the completion of the bike path between Genesee and Evergreen, you can now ride from Denver to Glenwood Springs without ever getting on I-70!
Glenwood Springs | Idaho Springs | Georgetown Loop Railroad
Glenwood Springs | Idaho Springs | Georgetown Loop Railroad
Glenwood Springs, a city with a total area of less than 5 square miles, is a further 2 hours east towards Denver along the I-70 and about 150 miles west of Denver.
Three and a half million gallons a day at a constant temperature of 120 degrees pour from the natural hot springs which are the largest natural hot springs in the world.
The hot spring pools are the big attraction here, one measuring 400 feet by 100 feet with water of 90 degrees, and a smaller therapy pool with water of 104 degrees.
The Iron Mountain Tramway carries visitors up the mountain for a tour of the caverns, hike along the half mile long Panoramic Trail for fantastic views over the Rockies and the Colorado River, pan for gemstones at Discovery Rock or try horse riding on a one hour trail through roaring Fork Valley.
The Colorado Wranglers offer a family friendly show, which include a chuck wagon supper and a western musical comedy show at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs.
White water rafting and fly fishing are just two of the many activities on offer in Glenwood Springs.
Georgetown Loop Railroad is still further east past the ski resorts of Vail and Aspen, and offers tourists a scenic and historic train ride around the mountains. Steam driven engines and old fashioned carriages add to the thrill.
The beauty of the rugged Rocky Mountains surrounds you as an old-time steam locomotive or a powerful diesel locomotives winds up the Clear Creek canyon, hauling your train past the remains of several gold and silver mines. Both fully enclosed and open cars give a breath taking view of everything along the line.
Board from the Silver Plume Depot or Devils Gate Station in Georgetown.
There is a full program of activities to choose from throughout the year, such as 4th July Fireworks train, Moonlight in the mountains Dinner Train, Wine Tasting Train, Pumpkin Festival Train and Santas Polar Adventure Trains.
There is a lovely tourist information store in Georgetown.
Idaho Springs is the birthplace of the Rocky Mountain gold rush 33 miles west of Denver, visit the gold mine to pan for gold and visit the gold-mining museum.
In nearby Miner Street, walk along the wooden sidewalks and visit the quaint shops for souvenirs, see the preserved steam train with carriages, or cross under the I-70 to visit the large waterwheel with tumbling cataracts.
South of town, drive the highest paved road in North America and head to the top of Mount Evans, one of Colorado's tallest mountains. The road starts off at 8,700 feet, rising to 14,240 feet at the summit. The temperature cools accordingly, if its 90 in Denver it will be more like 40 degrees at the top of Mount Evans.
Idaho Springs is also near Golden Gate State Park with stunning views of the continental divide, and within an hour's drive of six of the state's most famous ski resorts.
Dozens of other recreation spots are also near these 12,000 acres of dense forest, rocky peaks, and aspen-rimmed meadows laced with miles of trails awaiting the hiker, horseback rider, mountain biker and winter sports enthusiast.
Camp with electrical hook-ups and tent-sites in two different campgrounds, stocked fishing ponds, picnic sites and the Panorama Point Scenic Overlook where visitors can see 100 miles of the Continental Divide. In winter, visitors can go cross-county skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice fishing and ice skating.
