THE KING FAISAL MOSQUE ( SHARJAH) UAE مَسْجِد ٱلشَّارقة
The King Faisal Mosque in Sharjah was inaugurated on January 23, 1987, after more than two years of construction which cost Dh37 million..It stood for decades as the country’s most iconic mosque. Yet little was known about the history or background of the King Faisal Mosque in Sharjah. Why does it bear the name of a former Saudi monarch and who was its architect?
Mine was a search that lasted months, asking around town led me nowhere. Then on July 2016 I resorted to the network power of social media and put out a request first in English, and then in Arabic asking for information on the architect of the mosque that has overlooked my window from work for 15 years. The first tweet was seen by the King Faisal Foundation which was formed in 1976 by the sons of King Faisal (1906–1975) of Saudi Arabia to further their father’s legacy. Justin Vela wrote in local media, “King Faisal was known for making important reforms in the kingdom including abolishing slavery and allowing women to attend school before he was assassinated by a relative in 1975.”

500 Year Old Al Bidya Mosque ( مسجد البدية,) In Fujairah UAE. (500 Saal Purani Masjid)
The Al Badiyah Mosque (Arabic: مسجد البدية, sometimes transliterated Al Bidyah or Al Bidya) is the oldest extant mosque in the United Arab Emirates or Fujairah.[1] It is located in a small village in emirate Fujairah about 50 km north from region center.[2] It is also known as Ottoman Mosque
History
The mosque's date of construction is uncertain[3] and because the mud and stone built structure uses no wood, radiocarbon dating is not possible. It is estimated to date to the 15th century,[5] however some much earlier estimates have been proposed.[2] The site was investigated by the archaeological center of Fujairah in co-operation with the University of Sydney from 1997-98.[2] and Fujairah Archaeology and Heritage Department came up with the conclusion that the mosque was believed to be built in 1446 AD, along with the two watch towers overlooking the mosque and the village.[3]
Structure
The small, square structure has an area of 53 square metres (570 sq ft) and was built from materials available in the area, primarily stones of various sizes and mud bricks coated in many layers of whitewashed plaster. The roof has four squat, helical domes that are supported by only one centrally placed pillar that also forms the ceiling. Entrance to the mosque is through double-winged wooden doors.[2]
The prayer hall has a small mihrab (the niche in the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca), a simple pulpit, arches and openings. A central pillar divides the internal space into four squares of similar dimensions. The pillar supports all four domes that can be seen from the exterior.[4]
Inside the prayer hall, a number of small decorative windows allow light and air to enter the mosque. There are also cube-shaped spaces carved into the thick walls where copies of the Quran and other books are stored.[6]
The mosque continues to host daily prayers and is a tourist attraction.[2]

Funeral is held in UAE for Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi after he was found dead
The son of a powerful Emir has been laid to rest in the UAE after he was found dead in his London penthouse apartment at the age of 39 on Monday.
Tens of thousands of mourners attended the funeral of Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the owner of fashion label Qasimi Homme, on Wednesday in the city of Sharjah, which his father rules over.
Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi stood over his son's body with his eyes closed as he joined in prayers at the King Faisal Mosque at 9am.
The funeral was held amid reports that Sheikh Khalid had passed away during a drug-fuelled party at which some of the guests were having sex.
The Westminster coroners officers said that toxicology tests had been carried out during a post mortem, that took place before his body was repatriated.
However, the results 'may not be known for another two months' and so far no date has been set for an inquest. The streets around King Faisal mosque was blocked off by police on Wednesday as the ceremony took place, with regular traffic directed around.
Mourners filed into the building in silence before dignitaries including the Sultan entered through a separate door.
During the service, the Sultan was flanked by his fellow Emirs, including Sheikh Saud bin Saqr, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid, Ruler of Ajman and Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid, Crown Prince of Ajman.
Also in attendance was Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Tolerance, The National reported.
Mourners sat in silence until shortly before 9am when they stood as prayers were read out, Gulf News reported.
The bier carrying Sheikh Khalid's body was then driven to the nearby Al Jubail Cemetery where it was buried in an unmarked grave, decorated with only a few stones. As the Emirs left the graveyard, other mourners filed in to pay their respects.
Three days of national mourning began across the UAE on Tuesday, with flags flying at half mast. Al Badee Palace in Sharjah has also been opened to receive mourners during this period.
According to Sharia law, the dead should be buried as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours of death. The body is washed and shrouded before burial, which is followed by a salah, or prayer.
Sheik Khalid's funeral took place amid unconfirmed reports of a 'drug-fuelled orgy' at his apartment around the time he died. Sources said a quantity of Class A drugs had been found at the penthouse flat in Knightsbridge where his body was discovered but the police have yet to confirm or deny this.
Officers were said to have found the drugs after being called in by medics, according to The Sun.
A source told the same publication: 'There had apparently been a party where some guests were taking drugs and having sex.
'It is suspected that Sheikh Khalid may have died suddenly as a result of taking drugs. As well as the police inquiry, an urgent internal probe has been ordered and staff have been ordered to keep quiet.' The source added that Qasimi enjoyed the freedoms that London offers but that his story 'has ended tragically'.
The high-end apartment block where his body was found boasts a dozen homes that sell for up to £90 million.
The Sheikh's friend and former business partner Elliott Frieze said last night: 'He was incredibly hard working and talented. He was a wonderful person.'
No arrests have been made in the 'unexplained' tragedy, as detectives are describing it. Flags in Sharjah have been ordered to fly at half mast as three days of national mourning begin.
Tributes have flooded in on social media expressing condolences to the Emir, who lost another son aged 24 in 1999. His death has been described as 'unexpected' by members of his team.
The prince was born in Sharjah but moved to the UK aged nine where he was educated at the prestigious Tonbridge School in Kent.
He studied French and Spanish at Imperial College London before moving on to an architectural degree and art school Central Saint Martins, where he studied fashion and launched his menswear label Qasimi Homme in 2008.
Its flagship UK store opened in Soho that year, with his clothes now stocked across the globe and paraded at fashion weeks in London, Paris and the Middle East.
The UAE's Ministry of Presidential Affairs said in a statement: 'President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan mourns with grief and sorrow, the death of Sheikh Khalid Bin Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the son of the Ruler of Sharjah, praying to Allah the Almighty to rest his soul in peace, and grant his family patience and solace.' A tribute posted on his brand's Instagram account on Tuesday reads: 'It is with great sadness that we report that Khalid Al Qasimi has unexpectedly passed away on 1st July 2019.
