8 Bells Lecture | Ron Barks: The role of Los Alamos in the Atomic Age
Ron Barks, The role of Los Alamos in the Atomic Age it Introduced to History, Eight Bells Book Lecture, Naval War College Museum, Oct. 22, 2015.
The presentation is centered on the role of Los Alamos National Lab in the development of the weapons that launched the Atomic Age. I cast it in the context of WWII events taking place at the time in both the European and Pacific Theaters of combat so there is certainly some mention of the Navy in it which includes the role of the cruiser Indianapolis in transporting some of the parts of the first bomb to Tinian Island and the dreadful sinking of that ship just a few days later.

Pierotti's Clowns: Creating Community
After Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory's S-Site team was crowned the two-time New Mexico State Champion for amateur fast-pitch softball in 1952, the third baseman, Lou Pierotti, determined that a five-man team that included Bun Ryan as a pitcher would not need outfielders. He proposed a five-man team that could beat nine-man teams in competition. Some concerns regarding the success of the venture lead the team to dress and act like clowns, just in case they did not win. The combination of top athletic performance and zany stunts was an instant hit that continued to be popular for 25 years. The team donated all of their ticket sales to charity, ultimately raising over $2 million in today's dollars. Using recently digitized color film from 1957 and interviews with players, family members, and fans, this amazing story is captured and retold. The video was developed in connection with an exhibit by the Los Alamos History Museum.
