Castello Maniace (কাসতেল্লো মানিয়াসে )... (Castle Maniace).... Sumaia Hosen's Vlog..15
The first fort was built here in 1038 by George Maniakes, a Greek general and later the Catepan of Italy, after he captured Syracuse from the Arabs on behalf of the Emperor Michael IV. Frederick II, as King of Sicily, had his architect Riccardo da Lentini rebuild it in 1232-1240. King Peter III of Aragon resided here with his family in 1288. From 1305 to 1536 the castle was used as residence by numerous queens of Sicily.
In the 15th century it was used as a prison. In the following century it was included in the fortification defending the harbour and the city. A huge explosion damaged it in 1704, after which it was renovated and adapted to the use of guns.
It was bestowed by the King of Sicily upon Lord Nelson as Duke of Bronté, and was owned by subsequent Dukes.
The Castello Maniace is a citadel and castle in Syracuse, Sicily, southern Italy. It is situated at the far point of the Ortygia island promontory, where it was constructed between 1232 and 1240 by the Emperor Frederick II. It bears the name of George Maniakes, the Byzantine general who besieged and took the city in 1038. Originally, one could only enter the castle over a bridge spanning a moat (now filled). A feature of the castle is the decorated portal. Today the castle is open to public and is a local tourist attraction in Syracuse.

ITA, 2009, 20' - MySiracusa
---
A journey through the glorious ages of the city of Syracuse as relived through the history of its monument-symbol, the Castle of Maniace.
Imposing creations of the classical age, elements of Swabian, Imperial and Byzantine architecture, all merge into a single thread that links us today with the Bourbons and the House of Savoy - all reflected in the Castle built by Frederick II Hohenstaufen.

MANIACE CASTLE
There must have been fortifications at this narrow headland on Ortigia ever since the island was occupied, as it overlooks the entrance to Siracusa's sheltered bay, and is an obvious defensive site. The castle standing here now, however, dates back 'only' to the thirteenth century, when it was built on the orders of the great Frederick II, known as 'Wonder of the World' (who also built Puglia´Cs castel del Monte and other fortresses). It takes its name from George Maniakes, a Byzantine general who commanded an earlier fort on the site. The castle is open in the mornings, and it is worth visiting as there is a great deal more to it than you would guess from the entrance. Visitors enter through rings of defences, until reaching the castle at the heart of the complex; a stern square with round corner towers. The central portal is a grand pointed archway decorated with many different marbles. Until recently the castle was a military site and off-limits. italianshopdoc.com

Catania, Toarmina, Marzememi, Siracuse Sicily Vlog 2017
CATANIA, SICILY
DATES TRAVELED: 15TH FEB 2017 - 18TH FEB 2017
WEATHER: VERY SUNNY- 17-18°C IN TEMPERATURE
Our tour started from Catania. We rented a car from the airport and drove to a few places. We didn't have a long stay here so wanted to make the most of it.
DAY 1..Arrived at our hotel Miro B&B. Spent the evening in the Catania area.
DAY 2.. Drove to Mount Etna 30-40 min by car from Catania. Got to try some specialties from around this area pistachio nuts and honey. The honey known as 'Gold Etna' is amazing and comes in a variety of flavours such as lemon, strawberry and hazelnut. We then got a cable cart this cost us 30 euros each and just went half way. After this we drove to Toarmina which was about 1-2 hrs. drive from Mount Etna. Places we visited here were Castle Mola and Theatre Greco.
DAY 3..On the third day we drove to a fishing village called Marzamemi which is the southern most point of Sicily. It was originally called Mars? al-hammam by the Arabs in the 10th century. After a short visit here we drove to Siracuse. In this town we visited Castle Maniace, Cathedral in Duomo di Siracuse and Tempo di Apollo. Whist here we got try the local delicacies Pasta Alla Norma which is the most iconic dish. You will find that most of the foods have an influence of Greek, Spanish, French and Arab origin.
DAY 4..Our last and final day in Catania. In the morning we headed straight to Orta Botanica, a garden growing a wide variety of cactuses'. The place itself was ok, we only went there for something to do. we then went to the main plaza Piazza Duomo which also has a shopping district next to it. So we managed to garb some last minutes souvenirs before making our way to the airport.

Syracuse of history and myth (EN) - Sicily - Italia.it
The magnificent Island of Ortigia is an essential stop for tourists visiting Syracuse: it is an exemplar of this city's joie de vivre, characterized by the unique interplay of its history and position on the sea.
Visitors to Syracuse will be happily overwhelmed by its innumerable monuments testifying to the many diverse civilizations that passed through this land.
At the entrance to Porto Grande we find the dominating Maniace Castle, wanted by Frederick II as a way to demonstrate to Sicily his power and strength. Meanwhile, in Ortygia's hear lies one of the city's most important monuments: the Cathedral. Born as a Doric Temple to celebrate the Syracusan victory over the Carthaginians in 480 B.C., it was later converted into a Christian Church, in the 6th Century A.D.
Close observation of the Cathedral allows for the admiration of the traces left behind by each historical epoch: from the columns of the original temple, to the Norman battlements and the Baroque facade that, in its limestone construction, takes on rather particular golden tones at sunset.
A stay in Syracuse should without a doubt include a visit to its famous Greek amphitheatre, which from 1914 began a brand new life by once again putting on the plays and performances that made it legend.
