5 Top-Rated Day Trips from Milan, Italy | Europe Day Tours Guide
5 Top-Rated Day Trips from Milan, Europe.
Milan's position in Western Lombardy puts it within easy reach of several centers with plenty of tourist attractions. The Alps are so close that you can see them from the roof of the Duomo. Fabled Lake Como is less than an hour by train. The beautiful cities of Verona and Bergamo are easily accessible, as is Lake Garda. And even closer are Monza, Lodi, and Pavia with its immense monastery. Because Milan is the rail hub of northern Italy, getting to any of these places by train is easy, and packaged day tours often make it even easier to explore beyond the city. Here five day trips from Milan, Italy.
1. Lake Como
2. Verona and Lake Garda
3. Bernina Express to St. Moritz
4. Bergamo's Citta Alta
5. Pavia

We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods. This being Italy, we also tried to prioritize meals, sampling everything from pizza to risotto, and cappuccinos to aperitivos. The following travel guide will highlight 20 things to do when you visit Milan, Italy
1) Milan Catherdral (Il Duomo - Duomo di Milano - Domm de Milan)
2) Il Duomo Terrace
3) Italian Breakfast - Cappuccino and sweet Italian pastries
4) Sforza Castle - Castello Sforzesco
5) The Galleria - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
6) Risotto alla Milanese - Milan style risotto
7) Street Art around Porta Ticinese
8) Colonne di San Lorenzo - Columns of San Lorenzo Roman Ruins
9) Boat tour down the canal (linea traghetti gaggiano milano)
10) Dine along the canal in Milan's Navigli District
11) Aperitivo drinks and buffet - Apéritifs and digestifs
12) Shopping in Milan down Via Torino
13) Visiting Chinatown for some Chinese food
14) Ride a bicycle in Milan like a local
15) Pizza al taglio (pizza al trancio) Italian pizza by the slice
16) Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio containing relics of the 3 Magi
17) Duomo Museum covering the cathedrals history in-depth
18) New City Views with a hop-on-hop-off bus pass
19) Museum of Natural History - Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano
20) Night views of Milan nearby Il Duomo
Our trip to Milan, Lombardy was part of the Blogville project where we stayed in a local apartment and experienced all of the best cultural activities, museums, restaurants, arts and entertainment the city has to offer. This city guide is our best attempt to create a mix of best attractions and off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't necessarily find in a typical Milan tourism brochure.
20 Things to do in Milan Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our first stop was Il Duomo, which is the most recognized attraction in the city. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete.
So we've sat down at a little cafe and we're going to have our first Italian breakfast with cappuccino and sweet pastries.
Something that surprised us about Milan is that there is a castle right in the middle of the city. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, and it then underwent several restorations and expansions in the following centuries. Today it houses several of the city's most prized art possessions, including frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's very last sculpture.
For some upscale designer shopping, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be.
So we just found a local little restaurant and we're going to be trying a traditional dish that is very popular in this city and in the Lombardy region. We are going to have Risotto alla Milanese.
The Colonne di San Lorenzo are the remains of Roman ruins that date back to the 2nd century. They are believed to have been part of a bath house.
Another fun activity to try in Milan is a boat tour of the canals. The city's canals are attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who in 1482 was called over by the Duke of Milan to help renovate the city’s canal system.
Milan's Navigli District is one of the liveliest parts of town especially when the sun goes down for dining al fresco.
So we've gone out for our first Italian Aperitivo. Which is kind of like a pre-dinner drinking tradition. Basically, you get yourself a cocktail for about 10 Euros and that gives you access to this massive buffet.
And that's all for our visit to Milan. We hope this video will give you some cool ideas of sights and attractions to check out.
This is part of our Travel in Italy series showcasing Italian culture, Italian arts, Italian foods & Italian cuisine.

What to do in MILAN, Italy. A Travel Guide.
Looking for things to do in Milan? We spend the day exploring Milan and came up with a great list of things to do while in the city.
We started the day at the iconic Milan Cathedral (Milan Duomo), checking out the outside of this beautiful structure. We then made our way over to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which has to be one of the most beautiful malls in the world.
After that we grabbed lunch at a nearby deli, and took our sandwiches to a square to eat them.
Later we made our way to Sempione Park, where we walked through the courtyard of Sforza Castle where Leonardo Di Vinci lived for awhile and you can now find some of his artwork.
Lastly we walked up the canals in the Navigli district where we had Aperitivo at a bar.

If Rome represents the old Italy, Milan represents the new Italy. Milan is the most modern of all Italian cities, and it still keeps most of its past history intact.
Milan is famous for its wealth of historical and modern sights - the Duomo, one of the biggest and grandest Gothic cathedrals in the world, La Scala, one of the best established opera houses in the globe, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, an ancient and glamorous arcaded shopping gallery, the Brera art gallery, with some of the finest artistic works in Europe, the Pirelli tower, a majestic example of 1960s modernist Italian architecture, the San Siro, a huge and famed stadium, or the Castello Sforzesco, a grand medieval castle and the UNESCO's World Heritage Site Santa Maria delle Grazie Basilica, containing one of the world's most famous paintings: Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper.
The Duomo:
The Duomo is literally at the center of Milan. Streets radiate from the cathedral or circle it. The cathedral occupies a site that has been the most central location in the city since its founding.
The Duomo is the cathedral church of Milan, Lombardy, Italy. Dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity (Santa Maria Nascente), it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Archbishop Mario Delpini. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete. It is the largest church in Italy (the larger St. Peter's Basilica is in the State of Vatican City) and the third largest in the world.
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II:
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which is sometimes nicknamed “il salotto di Milano” (Milan’s drawing room), is an elegant nineteenth century shopping arcade. It houses numerous restaurants with terraces and some of the most luxurious boutiques of Milan.
Parco Sempione:
If you’re looking for some green space—and off-the-beaten-path sightseeing in Milan—head to Parco Sempione. Located in northwest Milan, this large park (116 acres) is the perfect place to enjoy a walk or run among flowers and greenery, far from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle. But the park, constructed back in 1888, is also full of attractions—including an aquarium, sports stadium, Napoleonic arch, and even a medieval castle.
Sforza Castle:
Sforza Castle is in Milan, northern Italy. It was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remnants of a 14th-century fortification.

►More information:
Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remains of a 14th-century fortification.
Walking distance, you'll find this beautiful, newly designed and built district, with a dedicated metro stop called 3 torri.
The district is called CityLife: it's a residential, commercial and business district close the old city centre of Milan. It has an area of 36.6 hectares.
The development is financed by Generali Group, designed by famous architects Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind.
The Straight One also know as Allianz Tower, The Twisted One also known as Generali Tower and The Curved One which is being built as we speak.
Walking distance again is the the Parco Industriale Alfa Romeo Portello. A 370.000 square meter park in the heart of Milan. Important features are the 2 main little hills.
Go to the Bosco Verticale. 2 Towers built in 2014 by Boeri Studio with a height of 111 metres and 76 metres and contain more than 900 trees on 8,900 square metres of terraces.
Literally next to the bosco verticale are the Italian Google Head Quarters if you're interested. I'd recommend a mini stop here since it's a very beautiful area.
5 minute walking distance is the Uni Credit Tower, another masterpiece of modern architecture located in the most advanced and businessy district of Milan.
Go for Aperitivo at theNavigli near Porta Ticinese! It's a sort of Venice in Milan with water canals and beautiful little houses.
Not only it's a very romantic place but also serves late cocktails in the open, ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET BOTH for only 10 euros ALL INCLUDED!
If you're more into comfy dining, in a quieter place and super delicious a la carte dining, we recommend Piccola Ischia! It's a typical Restaurant from the center south of Italy!
Prices here are super good! The traditional hand made pizza from Naples for 8 Euros! Appetizers for 3 euros! And it's all so good!

Narrator: Welcome to the wonderful City Wonders tour. We're here for a full day tour to go see Lago di Como, Bellagio, and then we're going to make our way into another country. We also do this incredible two hour cruise. We get to have a wonderful view of all of the beautiful villas that are along the lake. And get a peek at some of the incredibly famous celebrities that live around here, hopefully. We know that George Clooney has his house here. We also have Richard Branson of the Virgin Enterprises here, and you can also have a peek at some incredible settings for movies. Of course, my favorite stop on the entire tour is Bellagio. Bellagio truly is the pearl of Lago di Como where we have incredible romantic streets, beautiful little stores to peek in and, of course, restaurants with incredible views.
So welcome to Lugano in Switzerland, our second stop. So one wonderful thing about Switzerland is it has some of the best chocolate in the world, and I bet you didn't know that the invention of milk chocolate was actually something that happened here in Switzerland in 1875.
Female: I really enjoyed today because we got to see two countries and two lakes in one day. I think it was an amazing experience, and we had headsets so you can hear your guide at all times. I would definitely rate this City Wonders tour five stars out of five.

Milan, Italy In 2 Nights | Exploring Milano Vlog
Hi & (hopefully) welcome back to my channel!
I am so excited to have you follow along on our latest Mother-Daughter Italy Trip! This year our first stop is Milano for 2 nights (nearly 2 days), and I feel like it was the perfect welcome back to Italy for us. It was nearly 10 years since I've been back to Milan, and I must say, I really enjoyed my time here. In this vlog we of course explore the main tourist attractions such as the Duomo di Milano, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and many terraces with beautiful views and a Spritz in hand. We also explored an area I have never seen called the Navigli. The Naviglio Grande is a beautiful canal in Milano, and a perfect spot to walk around, have a drink, or eat some street food while taking in the breathtaking sights. We really loved this area and it was a highlight of our trip. Since we had such a short time in Milan, we saw the Sforzesco Castle as well, but at night time. We loved La Rinascente shopping mall, like I said, for the beautiful terraces with a view, specifically the mozzarella bar Obica! We also enjoyed eating street food at Luini (for delicious panzerotti), very cheesy pizza at Spontini, and gelato at Cioccolati Italiani :)
I hope you enjoyed following along on our mother-daughter 2019 Italy trip. If you did please leave a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe, because this is only our first stop... Next up: Lake Como (again)! xox
