History of Minneapolis
Minneapolis is the largest city by population in the U.S. state of Minnesota, and the county seat of Hennepin County. The origin and growth of the city was spurred by the proximity of Fort Snelling, the first major United States military presence in the area, and by its location on Saint Anthony Falls, which provided power for sawmills and flour mills.
Fort Snelling was established in 1819, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, and soldiers began using the falls for waterpower. When land became available for settlement, two towns were founded on either side of the falls: Saint Anthony, on the east side, and Minneapolis, on the west side. The two towns later merged into one city in 1872. Early development focused on sawmills, but flour mills eventually became the dominant industry. This industrial development fueled the development of railroads and banks, as well as the foundation of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. Through innovations in milling techniques, Minneapolis became a world-leading center of flour production, earning the name Mill City. As the city grew, the culture developed through its churches, arts institutions, the University of Minnesota, and a famous park system designed by Theodore Wirth.
Although the sawmills and the flour mills are long gone, Minneapolis remains a regional center in banking and industry. The two largest milling companies, General Mills and the Pillsbury Company, now merged under the General Mills name, still remain prominent in the Twin Cities area. The city has rediscovered the riverfront, which now hosts parkland, the Mill City Museum, and the Guthrie Theater.
Saint Paul Municipal Grain Terminal - SHPO
2012 has been designated the International Year of Co-operatives by the UN. This is the second of three videos featuring historic cooperatives in Minnesota.
Added to the national register in 2004 the remains of the Saint Paul Municipal Grain Terminal (the head house and sack house) sits on piers over the Mississippi River in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was built between 1927 and 1931 as part of the Equity Cooperative Exchange and is a remnant of Saint Paul's early history as a Mississippi River port city and the farmers' cooperative movement of the 1920 and 30s.
Agriculture in Minnesota
Visiting 83 counties in 2009 has renewed my belief that the fertile fields of our state are as critical to our economic future as the bank towers in Minneapolis or the suburban office parks in Plymouth or Woodbury.

Welcome to the Historic Donaldson Mansion
Are you ready to live on Lowry Hill in one of the most beautiful homes in Minneapolis? Sitting on 0.80 acres of land, this property includes two parcels, the Main House and Gardens, and the 4 Car Garage Carriage House with 2 bedroom apartment.
History of the Home
Built in 1906, this stunning home was designed for Lawrence Donaldson, who with his brother William, founded the Donaldson Department Store in Minneapolis. The architectural firm of Kees and Colburn was commissioned to design the family's residence, known for a number of major works in Minneapolis including the Grain Exchange Building, Donaldson's Office Building, and the Charles H. Harrington Mansion. They later designed the Loring Theater, the Ford Centre, and The Lowry, to name a few.
Constructed mainly of brick, the home is exquisitely detailed with a mixture of several design styles, the most prevalent being Arts & Crafts and Beaux Arts. Subtle design elements throughout the home, linked to Mr. Donaldson's Scottish heritage, feature the thistle. Probably the most identifiable symbol of all things Scottish, the flower can be found on the facade of the house, the entry columns, above the entry door, on the chimneys, in the living room Tiffany window, and more!
Completed sometime in 1907, additional modifications to the home began in 1908 by expanding the north side - a dining room and a second floor bedroom were enlarged, a sleeping porch was added, and the screened-in porch became an enclosed sun room. The Donaldson's also hired well known designer John Bradstreet to create a Japanese inspired Sun Parlor, as well as design the Reception Room/Study off the main foyer. In 1916, the carriage house was completed with four large carriage stalls, a second floor apartment, a number of work rooms, and a connecting tunnel.
As happened to many large properties in the Twin Cities as time moved on, the estate was subdivided into six separate lots in 1959 when it was sold by the Donaldson family. After the passing of many decades and multiple owners, the main house was bought by the current owners in 2000, who later that year acquired the original northwest hillside lot extending down to Kenwood Parkway, and in 2001 the carriage house. With three of the six lots reunited, the land totals just over an acre, or 44,792 square feet, representing one of the largest residential properties in Minneapolis.
Restoration of a Gem
Thankfully the new owners had a vision of restoring the home back to its former splendor. Over the last decade, with love and dedication, some of the highest quality craftsman and artisans were employed to bring the home back to life, while incorporating state of the art technology and modern conveniences for today's busy lifestyle.
Carriage House
The 3 level carriage house includes a fully restored and renovated upper level 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath apartment with kitchen, living room, and dining room and just under 1500 finished square feet. If leased, one parking stall is included with the apartment, and is located on the main level in the property's terrazzo floored 4 car garage. The space would also be perfect as a nanny or in-law suite. The garage main level also features a workshop and tool room. The lower level, which connects to the main residence via a tunnel includes an exercise room, work shop, half bath, and storage rooms.

Tracy Minnesota Grain Elevator Feed Mill Explosion 2012
Tracy is a city in Lyon County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,163 at the 2010 census.[6]
U.S. Route 14 serves as a main arterial route in the community.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.23 square miles (5.78 km2), of which 2.18 square miles (5.65 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water.[1]
Tracy was platted in 1875.[7] It was named for John F. Tracy, a railroad official.[7] A post office called Tracy has been in operation since 1877.[8] The city was incorporated in 1893.[9]
On June 13, 1968, Tracy was hit by an F5 tornado which killed 9 people and injured 150. Until the 1960s, Tracy was a highly active railroad town on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway as a concentration point for numerous branchlines in the area serving heavy agriculture. Today, Tracy holds an annual summer festival called Boxcar Days, which takes place Labor Day weekend as a sign of the railroad's influence on the town. Currently, Tracy is still a division point on the Canadian Pacific Railway (formerly the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad), where railroad crews from both east and west exchange trains.
Two people have been injured in an explosion at the CHS Inc. grain elevator in the southwestern Minnesota community of Tracy.
CHS spokeswoman Lani Jordan says it happened early Monday afternoon in equipment that loads and unloads trucks and rail cars.
Jordan says one employee suffered minor burns, while a non-employee truck driver was also injured. Both were sent to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for evaluation and treatment. She did not have details on the trucker’s injuries or condition.
WCCO-TV’s John Lauritsen, who is reporting from the scene, said one of the victims was seriously injured.
There was no fire, Jordan said, and all employees are accounted for.
Jordan also says there’s no risk to the community, and that CHS is working with local authorities and the state fire marshal’s office to determine the cause. The company is still evaluating the extent of the damage.
So far, it appears the mill is still operable but parts of the elevator need to be repaired.
Mayor Tony Peterson said said he knew they were doing some maintenance work on the elevator but doesn’t know if that had anything to do with the incident.
