Missouri Civil War: Then and Now
brief rundown of Missouri during the Civil war
St. Louis History - Missouri History Museum's War Collection
The collections of the Missouri History Museum include some gems the general public rarely gets to see.
Sometimes it's a book or simply the record of a person's life story.
The U.S. Mexican War and the Spanish-American War, they were fought more than 50 years apart, but all these years later are still easily confused.
And the Missouri History Museum has rare documentation of both conflicts including a limited edition book of paintings of the Mexican War, a battle resulting from a dispute over how much of Texas would become part of the United States.
As for the Spanish American War, St. Louisan Frederick Leismann fought in both its theaters. First in Cuba and the second in the Philippines and years later told his firsthand accounts to his son in law who wrote them all down.
Only 500 copies were ever made of the book of Mexican War paintings. And of course only one copy exists of Frederick Leismann's personal account of the Spanish American. Leisman went on to become something of a chronicler himself serving as the Missouri General Assembly's Chief Stenographer.

Dr. Robert Archibald from the Missouri History Museum discusses the much overlooked impact this region had during the Civil War.
KETC | Living St. Louis | Jefferson Barracks
From KETC, LIVING ST. LOUIS Producer Ruth Ezell tours Jefferson Barracks. What is now a St. Louis County Park once served as a training center for thousands of area soldiers. From its establishment in 1826 until it was closed in 1946, Jefferson Barracks—the nation's first Infantry School of Practice—supplied and prepared troops for battle in six of the United States' major military conflicts. Ezell tours the site with Jefferson Barracks Museum curator Marc Kollbaum and explores the center's role in equipping area servicemen and women for conflict during WWII. One of the things that surprised me was that during the height of the WWII draft, so many new servicemen were being processed at the facility that Jefferson Barracks became—in terms of population—the third-largest city in Missouri, says Ezell.
Controlling Missouri, Part 1: Nathaniel Lyon in St. Louis
Nathaniel Lyon, a notoriously harsh officer in the US army, is sent to St. Louis to ensure Missouri’s place in the Union. His policies have the effect of alienating much of the population of the city, which is predominantly Unionist, leading to the formation of a secessionist resistance group at Camp Jackson.
Chris Calton recounts the controversial history of the Civil War. This is the 17th episode in the third season of Historical Controversies. You may support this podcast financially at Mises.org/SupportHC.

Photographs, artifacts, text panels, and audio-visual displays guide visitors through pre-war Jewish life in Europe, the rise of Nazism and events during the Holocaust between 1933-1945, post-war events including the Nuremberg Trials, and Jewish life after the Holocaust.
In 2012, HMLC installed its newest interactive exhibition entitled Change Begins with Me: Confronting Hate, Discrimination and Ethnic Conflict in our post-Holocaust world today. By August of 2015, HMLC will have toured approximately one half million visitors during its twenty year existence.
In addition, the HMLC sponsors temporary exhibits, public lectures, a monthly-film series, teacher-training workshops, and an annual Yom HaShoah community commemoration. The HMLC also houses a comprehensive video library with more than 500 titles and an oral history project with approximately 150 testimonies that are available to educators and the public. For further study of the Holocaust, the HMLC offers a range of books for sale at the Museum bookstore. A Garden of Remembrance is available outside the Museum for contemplation and reflection.
