Gateway Arch Experience in St. Louis, Missouri
Gateway Arch National Park, formerly known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial until 2018, is an American national park located in St. Louis, Missouri, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Gateway Arch and its immediate surroundings were initially designated as a national memorial by executive order on December 21, 1935, and redesignated as a national park in 2018. The park is maintained by the National Park Service (NPS).
The memorial was established to commemorate:
the Louisiana Purchase, and the subsequent westward movement of American explorers and pioneers;
the first civil government west of the Mississippi River; and
the debate over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case.
The national park consists of the Gateway Arch, a steel catenary arch that has become the definitive icon of St. Louis; a 91-acre (36.8 ha) park along the Mississippi River on the site of the earliest buildings of the city; the Old Courthouse, a former state and federal courthouse where the Dred Scott case originated; and the 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) museum at the Gateway Arch.
The Gateway Arch:
The Gateway Arch, known as the Gateway to the West, is the tallest structure in Missouri. It was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947 and built between 1963 and October 1965. It stands 630 feet (192 m) tall and 630 feet (192 m) wide at its base. The legs are 54 feet (16.5 m) wide at the base, narrowing to 17 feet (5.2 m) at the arch. There is a unique tram system to carry passengers to the observation room at the top of the arch.
Old Courthouse:
The Old Courthouse is built on land originally deeded by St. Louis founder Auguste Chouteau. It marks the location over which the arch reaches. Its dome was built during the American Civil War and is similar to the dome on the United States Capitol which was also built during the Civil War. It was the site of the local trials in the Dred Scott case.
The courthouse is the only portion of the memorial west of Interstate 44. To the west of the Old Courthouse is a Greenway between Market and Chestnut Streets which is only interrupted by the Civil Courts Building which features a pyramid model of the Mausoleum of Mausolus (which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) on its roof. When the Civil Courts building was built in the 1920s, the Chouteau family sued to regain the property belonging to the Old Courthouse because it had been deeded in perpetuity to be a courthouse.
Museum at the Gateway Arch:
Underneath the arch is a visitor center, entered from a circular entryway facing the Old Courthouse. Within the center, a project to rebuild the Museum at the Gateway Arch was completed in July 2018. The new museum features exhibits on a variety of topics including westward expansion and the construction of the arch, all told through a St. Louis lens. Tucker Theater, finished in 1968 and renovated 30 years later, has about 285 seats and shows a documentary (Monument to the Dream) on the arch's construction. A second theater was added in 1993 but removed in 2018 as part of the CityArchRiver renovation project. Also located in the visitor center are a gift shop and cafe.
Tram Ride to the Top:
Getting there is part of the adventure.
Gaze at over 43,000 tons of concrete and steel making an iconic, elegant arc 63 stories high into the Midwest sky. Shaped by the inspired design of Finnish-America architect Eero Saarinen, the Gateway Arch celebrates the westward expansion of the United States and the pioneers who made it possible. Since its completion in 1965, the monument has taken millions of visitors on the trip to the top to enjoy stunning views stretching up to 30 miles to the east and west.
Old Courthouse:
Landmark in Every Sense of the Word
Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history.
Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.

ABOUT THE PARK Gateway Arch towers 630 feet above the Mississippi River and is a symbol of St. Louis' role in the nations westward expansion. Under the Arch is the Museum of Westward Expansion where animated exhibits tell the story in the words of those whose lives shaped the American West, from the Louisiana Purchase to the closing of the frontier in 1890. It was from nearby Hartford, Illinois that the Lewis and Clark Expedition departed in 1804.
While the West was being settled, the issue of slavery was not. Here at the Old Courthouse, Dred Scott successfully sued for his freedom in 1850. Unfortunately, for millions of African-Americans, freedom wouldn't come until after the American Civil War.
In 1948, Architect Eero Saarinen won a national contest held to determine the design of the memorial. Over 5,000 tons of steel were used to build the triangular shaped arch. The entire surface of the Arch is stainless steel plates.

1969 Velorex 16/350 Three-wheeler
One of 12,000 motorized three-wheelers made in the former Czechoslovokia
Black and tan canvas/metal exterior with matching interior
Two-seater
Jawa two-stroke, two-cylinder, 350cc engine with forced air cooling
Four-speed sequential manual transmission
Cruising speed: 37 mph (maximum 53 mph)
Weight: 683 pounds unloaded, maximum 1102 pounds
Length: 10.1 feet, width: 4.6 feet and height: four feet
The most fun you can have on three wheels is in this 1969 Velorex 16/350 motorized three-wheeler, presented by MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This three-wheeler, made in the former Czechoslovakia, is an extremely rare sight in the United States. You can be fairly sure that you won’t see another one at a cruise night or a car show.
With its black and tan exterior, the painted fenders and canvas body panels, supported by steel tubing, are in good order. The car’s glass panels are in good shape but the headlights show some patina due to age. The vehicle has two wheels ahead of the driver and a single, centered wheel behind the driver. With its canvas panels removed, the three-wheeler resembles a rolling bird cage.
With its Jawa two-stroke, two-cylinder 350cc engine and a four-speed sequential manual transmission, the Velorex has a cruising speed of 37 miles per hour and a maximum speed of 53 mph. It weights 683 pounds unladen and has a maximum weight limit of 1,102 pounds. It’s 10 feel long, about 4.5 feet wide and four feet tall.
Inside, the matching black and tan bench seat provides a cozy place to sit with your favorite co-pilot as you navigate side streets and back roads together. The Velorex’s light weight, small size and open-air feel combine to make it a very fun vehicle in which to tool around.
Beginning in 1936, two brothers, František (1914 – 1954) and Mojmír (1924-2011) Stránský, the owners of a bicycle repair shop in the village of Parník near Česká Třebová, began the design of a small, cheap three-wheeled car, inspired by the Morgan Motor Company’s three-wheelers. In 1943, they built their first prototype using steel tubing wrapped by dural sheet metal and some bicycle parts (later these would be replaced by parts from motorcycles). They named the vehicle Oskar (“kára na ose,” or “car on axle”).
In 1945, the brothers built their first batch of cars, using leather cloth instead of sheet metal as the bodywork. Three vehicles were powered by 150cc ČZ motorcycle engines, three with six horsepower, 300cc PAL engines and six with 250cc Jawa units. The price was about a quarter of the cost of a typical car.
The post-war Czechoslovakian auto industry was unable to meet popular demand for vehicles, resulting in long waiting periods and quotas. Several models of small cars had been built either by amateurs or in small runs (e.g., Kreibich, TRIGA Tripolino and JAB).
In 1963, production of the newly designed “Model 16” started (fitted with either ČZ 175 or Jawa 350 type 572 engines); and the model was modernized again in 1968. In 1971, production of three-wheeled cars stopped and the company switched to production of a four-wheeler, the “Model 435-0”, which featured the Jawa 350 type 572 – 04 engine. Problems in design and manufacturing, as well as the inability to compete with higher-category cars (including the cheap Trabants), made the four-wheeler a commercial failure, and its production was stopped in 1973. Plans to produce a small car similar to Fiat 500 or a rickshaw-like truck did not materialize.
Spare parts for Velorex vehicles were first produced in the Solnice plant then in Rychnov nad Kněžnou after 1975. In the mid-1980s, India tried to obtain a license to produce the three-wheelers; the deal failed because the original tooling no longer existed.
As of 1996, 62.5 percent of the three-wheelers sold in the Czech Republic and Slovokia were still registered. As of 2006, the vehicle can be still seen occasionally and it has obtained cult-like status among its owners. Several Velorex clubs exist in the Czech Republic. Rallies are regularly organized in Boskovice (last in 2007) and in Lipnice nad Sázavou, inside the Lipnice Castle. Until 2000, only the motorcycle driving license (A) was required, afterwards the B1 license (car from age of 17).
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 56,455 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title.

Even more elegant in black, the Continental Mark IIs made quite an exclamation point when they were introduced in late 1955, a year that already saw record vehicle sales in the United States.
More at:
This Mark II, like all of them, was made at the Allen Park Body and Assembly in Allen Park, Michigan on March 16, 1956 and it was the ninth vehicle made that day. This example is one of only 2,550 Mark IIs made in 1956. This example was originally sold by Havens Motors, Inc., in Logansport, Indiana to an Alicia Ballard. Between 1992 and 2004, Jared Bruce owned it. Since then, this Mark II has fallen to the point where it needs some TLC but very complete and hard to find in running and driving condition.
Dressed in Presidential Black (code 01), this car’s paint and trim are in mediocre condition. Blemishes are found on the trunk lid; the taillights show cracks and other areas of the car do not meet the 10-foot test. The bodywork however is straight and solid.
This car rolls on older Commander wide whitewall tires, size L78-15 at all four corners. The tires are mounted on steel wheels topped by factory wheel covers.
Under the hood is Lincoln’s 368 CID Y-block V-8 backed by a Turbo-Drive three-speed automatic transmission and 3.07:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power steering, power brakes and power front seats.
Other standard equipment included an AM radio, whitewall tires, heater and factory air conditioning.
Inside, the car’s gray and white Bridge of Weir leather interior (code 1E6L) is in overall fair shape. Capping off the inside is a factory AM radio. The wipers, power windows and gauges are inoperable.
The Continental Mark II was revived in late 1955 as a separate marque, produced by a separate division of Ford Motor Company, as its sole model. This version was a unique design with the highest quality control ever seen in the automobile industry. High-class luxury abounded in the new Continental, and with very limited availability, it appeared even more exclusive than the original. This car was so exclusive, even celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley and political figures like the Shah of Iran and President Dwight D. Eisenhower had to follow Ford’s protocol to qualify for ownership. Actress Elizabeth Taylor received a Mark II from Warner Brothers as a gift; its exterior custom painted to match her eyes.
More important, the car was the personal vehicle of choice for many Ford family members. Josephine Ford, Henry Ford’s sole granddaughter, and his three grandsons, Benson, Henry II and William Clay Ford all piloted Continental Mark IIs. The Mark II sold new for $10,400, the equivalent of a new Rolls-Royce or two Cadillacs at that time.
Ford fun factoids – 98 percent of 1956 Continentals came with power brakes; 85 percent had power seats; 86 percent had power windows; 94 percent had radios; 99 percent had heaters; and 98 percent had whitewall tires.
Competition to the Mark II in 1956 included Bentley’s Continental, Cadillac’s Eldorado Seville, Chrysler’s New Yorker Newport two-door hardtop, Jaguar’s Mark VIII, Lincoln’s own Premiere Coupe, Mercedes-Benz’s 300d “Adenauer,” Packard’s Caribbean Hardtop and Rolls-Royce’s Silver Cloud.
This black beauty deserves another chance at road redemption, you owe it to yourself to visit MotoeXotica Classic Cars and check out this Continental for yourself.

Rare vehicle, left hand drive Italian market BMW
Recently imported from a dry climate in Italy
Extremly original BMW with one recent respray, interior is completely original
Correct white over Capri Green exterior and ivory/gray interior
Rear-mounted 697cc flat two-cylinder engine producing 32HP (47 mpg)
Four-speed manual transmission
The first BMW to use a steel monocoque structure
Very nice original undercarriage
Produced in West Germany
Forty years before BMW unveiled its Mini, the company made its first foray into small but sporty models, pre-dating the famous 2002 model. MotoeXotica Classic Cars has an example of this early sporty rear engine BMW , which you may not have seen before unless you’ve been to classic BMW museums. We are pleased to present this rarely seen and very original 1963 BMW 700 LS Luxus two-door saloon. This BMW is a rare left hand drive Italian market car that was recently imported from the United States from a very dry climate of Italy. Other than a recent correct respray, this car is very original and hard to come by in such a survivor state!
Finished in correct white over Capri Green, the car’s paint and trim are in overall good condition. The car’s windows are clear and intact, as are the car’s lights, including its Fintail-style taillamps.
This wee BMW rides on vintage Michelin radials, size 5.20-12 at all four corners. The tires are old and do show dry rot in the sidewalls
This car’s bodywork is straight, including the hood in the rear overall very presentable, rare example with some bubbling in the paint. The engine bay is tidy, the battery appears new, the front cargo area is in good condition and the bumpers fit well though the rear one evidences some blemishes upon close inspection. The undercarriage is completely original, plus very dry and tidy.
Under that rear hood is the correct 697cc flat two-cylinder engine using a Solex 34PCI single-barrel carburetor mated to a four-speed manual transmission producing 32 HP with achievable mpg in the mid 40’s.
Inside, the car’s ivory and gray interior is in overall decent condition especially for being completely original. The thin-backed front bucket seats are in fair order, with the driver’s seat showing blemishes and wear but the material is correct and original. There is no carpeting; instead, the floor is covered in the hard to find BMW rubber matting that is in decent order. The headliner is in overall fair shape but does show some blemishes. The instrument panel, with its VDO gauges, is in good order, as is the factory, two-spoke steering wheel, inner door panels, mirror glass and shift lever are all in good shape. This is a radio delete model and the horn is inoperable.
The 700 models were a sales success at a time when BMW was close to financial ruin. More than 188,000 were sold before production ended in November 1965. Upon discontinuing the 700, BMW left the economy car market and did not return until 2002 with the Mini.
Wolfgang Denzel, the distributor of BMW cars in Austria, commissioned Giovanni Michelotti to prepare concept sketches based on a lengthened BMW 600 chassis. In January 1958, Denzel was awarded a development contract for the 700. Denzel presented a prototype to BMW’s management in July 1958. The concept, a 2-door coupe with a slanted roof, was generally well received, but objections were raised about the limited passenger space. BMW decided to produce two versions, the coupe, and a two-door sedan with a taller, longer roof.
If you’re looking to add to your BMW collection or just looking for a unique European city car, make sure to come by our facility soon and look this one over for yourself. We guarantee you will be the only one with this model at your local BMW meets!
Competition to the BMW 700 in 1963 included Alfa Romeo’s Dauphine, DKW’s Junior De Luxe, Ford’s Anglia Deluxe and Hillman’s Minx De Luxe Saloon.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 25,541 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
