Epic Natural Beauty! Sailing Destination: Crystal River & Inland to Rainbow River
Coastal Cruising Florida: Places to Visit with Stunning Natural Beauty.
Note: Once anchored near Crystal River, a tour guide can shuttle you inland to Rainbow River. There are kayak rentals, or you can bring your own if you have access to a vehicle. It's worth renting a car to see the nearby historic towns, experience the many wildlife preserves, and generally explore.
Location: Gulf side, Crystal River, Florida. the Nature Coast
In the winter months, manatees flock to Crystal river and you're allowed to swim near them (there are rules of course against hassling them). We explored this area in early summer, when most of the manatees have left for the season. There are no manatees in Rainbow River. Some tour guides here operate year-round and are happy to show you the area's natural wonders.
Dinghy in to Port Hotel and Marina, near Crystal River's King spring, for good food and drinks at their charming cafe and adjacent bar.

Another spectacular destination in Florida. Peaceful, quite and natural this is the place to come to see manatees in their natural environment. In the summer the water gets cloudy but in November it clears up. Up to 700 manatees come into the Crystal River for the winter due to the constant 72 degree temperature of the spring.
EVERY manatee carries scars from boat propellers, there is an effort underway to reduce boat speed in the river but many boat owners are resisting this.

There's SO much things to do in Crystal River, Florida on a weekend getaway. Three Sisters Springs and swimming or kayaking with the manatees is a must!

Florida Beautiful Nature - St. Jones River Tour at Blue Spring October 2015
What a beautiful and relaxing boat tour! Absolutely gorgeous nature view of St. Jones river. Wild alligators, turtles, birds etc.
As the sun rises over the sawgrass marshes that mark the starting point of the St. Johns River, it slices through the mist that defines mornings in central Florida. The rain that fell here overnight may evaporate in the afternoon or it may wind its way along the length of the 310 miles of the St. Johns River and flow into the Atlantic Ocean.
Blue Spring State Park is a state park located west of Orange City, Florida. The park is a popular tourist destination; available activities include canoeing, SCUBA diving, Kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and swimming. The spring is the largest on the St. Johns River and serves as the winter home of many Florida manatees that come up the St. Johns to bask in the relatively warm waters (constant 72 Fahrenheit) of the springs. Over 100Â million US gallons of water flow out of Blue Spring into the St. Johns River every day.
The park was acquired by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in 1972 to kick-start its Manatee Protection Program.
Considered one of the most popular nature oriented tours in Florida, their vessel, the “Native II”
was specially designed to ply the shallow backwaters of the St Johns River to allow visitors to hear the sounds of nature as they encounter native wildlife in this fragile ecosystem. They provide high-quality, relaxing, educational tours led by experienced naturalists who detail the rich cultural history of the native Captain Ron Woxberg and his family moved into the St. Johns River basin area in 1979 and quickly realized this stretch of river from Lake Harney to Lake George was very unique. He enjoys, boating, fishing and camping, and is proud to share it with the endless stream of visitors that feel a need to experience and connect with the more natural side of Florida.
Blue Springs State Park is a sight in itself. The titular attraction is a deep sinkhole that provides swimming and scuba recreational opportunities. An oak-shaded boardwalk follows the river and leads to the docks where guests check in and arrange for their boat or kayak tours. St. Johns River Cruises was visited twice by a Florida SEE Assessor. Both visits assessed the pontoon boat cruise.
The captain and guide had us board the Native II, a comfortable and spacious pontoon with an excellent PA system. Having a stroller with us, the captain pointed out that they have a lift for wheelchairs and a row specifically suited for them and strollers. She introduced herself to the group, offered the necessary Coast guard safety information, including the location of emergency numbers, fire extinguishers and life jackets and off we went.
The captain explained that we would head up river and offered a synopsis of what we could expect on the tour. She offered snacks and beverages and requested that all garbage and recyclables be placed in bins where it could be taken care of later.
As we passed the kayak tour we slowed and watched an alligator swim in front of our boat. The kayak tour guide explained alligator safety tips (no feeding or harassing) and suggested the alligator was simply defending its territory. They paddled on and the alligator went about its business.
We stopped several times over the course of the 2-hour tour. The guide provided moments of quiet and opportunities to take photos of several different species of birds. The history of the steamship era unique to rivers such as the St. Johns was very interesting.
Back on land the Florida SEE Assessor had the opportunity to talk at length with the owner Ron Woxberg who explained the importance of the partnership he has with the State Park and its staff. They work with student groups, help with river clean ups, provide research data as well as offer their boats for various projects. They run an impressive operation. Congratulations to St. Johns River Cruises as the latest SEE Certified Ecotour Operator.

To protect manatees from harm, harassment and disturbance, the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and Manatee Sanctuaries were created in parts of Kings Bay. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asks all paddlers to watch this informational video in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for humans and manatees alike.

Majestic Manatee Tour Crystal River, Florida
Crystal River, Florida is one of the places where many manatees call home during the winter months. It's constant 72 degree spring water is perfect for them during this season. I have to say, swimming with manatees is one of the most amazing life experiences and adventures ever. My inner child (who desperately wanted to be a Marine Biologist) was in all her glory watching and observing, and just basking in their awesomeness. They are so interesting to watch and we saw about 6 of them. They don't do much when they're resting, but watching their faces as they come up to take a breath or two then head back down to continue their nap is so cool to see. And who knew that algae grew on them and the fish eat the algae off of them. Some even had barnacles that grew on them. The ones resting near rocks looked just like rocks and I'm fascinated by how something so big can be so camouflage but also glide and move so smoothly. Did you know that manatees only have about 3-4% body fat?? Hard to believe! That was just one of the interesting facts that Captain Colin told us about on your tour. We highly recommend the Majestic Manatee Tour with Captain Colin and swim guide, Mikayle. They were AMAZING and this was an awesome trip for the whole family. Even our 6 year old had a wonderful time.

Manatees At Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River, Florida | 4K Footage
In this episode We are at Three Sisters Springs located at Crystal River, Florida... Those video clips was taken last month so at the beginning of the winter season when Manatees are swimming into the river to refuge themself from the chilly Gulf of Mexico water... The lowest temperature they can handle is 68F so they will sit here until March... Definitely you have to check it out if you'll be passing by during winter season... Since I had to take off my drone outside of the Park and my range was limited over there, there's only few aerial shots in this video but I'm sure my DSLR footage will keep Our standards and wont disappoint you here... Check this out...
