Boston Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
Everything YOU need to know before you travel to Boston Massachusetts in the USA. Boston is the hub of New England, in the Northeast of the United States. Visiting Boston is like a history class in person. Boston is the cradle of much of the US’s history including playing a significant role in the American Revolution, having the first public library in the US, and the first lighthouse. Boston is a city of Neighborhoods, with 23 distinct neighborhoods. Boston has lots of Parks -- public green space is 17 percent of the city. You are never more than a half mile from a park. Boston is very compact.. Downtown Boston is roughly 2 square miles. About 13% of Boston citizens commute by foot, giving it the highest percentage of pedestrian commuters in major cities of the United States.
2 - Top Attractions
Freedom trail
A red-brick path connecting the most famous sites. 2.5 miles long.
16 of Boston’s most historic sites including:
Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Paul Revere House and Old North Church.
North End
The end of the Freedom Trail, and home to Boston’s Little Italy district.
Make sure to get a cannoli from Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry.
Boston Common was declared America’s first public park in 1634
Right next to it is the Boston Public Garden, America’s first Botanic Garden
JFK Presidential Library
All about the life of the US’s 35th president… a bit of the beaten path, but worth it for history buffs.
Beacon Hill
Known as Boston’s most “beautiful” neighborhood
Known for its charming, narrow cobblestone streets, federal style row houses and gaslit streetlamps. It’s also considered to be one of Boston’s most desirable and expensive residential areas in the city
Fenway Park
Home to the Boston Red Sox, built in 1912, it’s the Oldest Major League Baseball Stadium still in use.
3 - Food
Quincy Market
great gathering spot and place for lunch, with over 35 stands offering a wide food selection.
Seafood
Scrod - Catch of the day
Chowders, Lobster Rolls
Italian Food
Dunkin Donuts started here.. And yes, there’s one on every corner.
Beer: Visit the Sam Adams Brewery opened in 1984. Tours are free.. And with free beer tasting!
There’s **NO HAPPY HOUR**
Boston has banned after work drink specials. Time-of-day deals are limited to food. So you’ll find cheap food options from 4pm-6pm, but not alcohol.
4 - Getting In
You’ll likely be flying in to Boston Logan International Airport, which is just a short 3 miles away from Boston. 40 airlines that serve Boston, and 3 hotels onsite
You can also take the Blue Line Subway, but you have to take the Massport shuttle bus to get to the Subway stop.
Bus: Silver Line SL1 will take you in to the city along the waterfront to South Station -- it’s free for passengers arriving at the airpor
5 - Getting Around
Getting around Boston is like navigating a maze
6 - When to go
Summer is peak tourist season (June-August)
But locals recommend Fall, September & October. The leaves are changing color, and the weather is much more pleasant.
Winter is cold! And long! With lots of snow! You’ve been warned!
Spring often has lots of rain.
Biggest Holidays are St Patrick’s Day and the Boston Marathon
Re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party every year on DECEMBER 16
7 - Language
English.. But the Boston accent is pretty thick, and there’s some interesting local slang
Not everyone has the Boston Accent… but you’ll definitely hear it
8 - Wicked Wifi
I mentioned Wifi means good… Wicked Wifi is the cities metropolitan wifi network. The SSID is “WickedFreeWifi”
9 - Hotels
Boston is old, and so are the hotels and AirBNBs. If you are expecting an elevator and A/C, call to check in advance.
10 - Universities
More than 20 colleges in Boston alone… and Harvard, and MIT which are technically not in Boston, but in Cambridge across the river.
140,000 college students call Boston home.
Makes for lots of cheap eats, and nightlife options.

15 Things to do in Oxford Travel Guide | Day Trip from London, England video transcript:
Good morning here in London. Today we are taking a day trip. Yes, we sure are. And we're heading off to Oxford. I mean this is obviously a destination that is quite famous. The most famous University in the world.
It is not far from London. So it is a day trip. We're really excited. We're going to film a travel guide to Oxford.
A couple of tips to keep in mind if you're traveling by bus. It is usually cheaper if you book in advance. Also, we noticed that weekdays were cheaper than weekends so we are going on a Friday today and got a good deal.
We made it. We have arrived and that was an awesome trip. We got to see London and the countryside.
Food always comes first. We're about food always. We cannot go sightseeing without a bite of food. We found a pub that is nice and cozy. We're right in the corner and this place apparently specializes in fish and chips.
The University of Oxford has no known foundation date but teaching of some form has taken place here since the year 1096 making it the oldest University in the English speaking world. Today the University is made up for 38 self-governing colleges a few of which are open to visitors.
So one of the things you can do when you visit Oxford is go around and tour the different colleges. We paid two pounds and now we're inside Trinity College.
Trinity College was founded in 1555 and it’s one of the smallest colleges in Oxford admitted just over 400 students. This college has produced some noteworthy figures, including a few prime ministers.
We also saw had a quick glance at Radcliffe College and the Bodleain Library, before continuing on to the University Church.
This is the oldest Botanic Garden in Great Britain and it was originally founded as a medicinal garden. The Garden was also frequently visited by Lewis Carroll, an Oxford mathematics professor, and the gardens were a source of inspiration for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Oxford Castle is a partly ruined Norman castle dating back to Medieval times. During the 18th century it housed the local prison, but today those same walls are home to a hotel.
So I think that is a wrap for our day trip to Oxford. Time to catch our bus. We're tired but we've done the main things we wanted to do. I hope you guys enjoyed this travel guide to Oxford and that it gives you a good idea of how you can kind of explore the city on a day trip from London. If you can come for longer because we wish we had 2 or 3 days here.
This is part of our Travel in England video series showcasing British food, British culture and British cuisine.

Why Would We Help Them? | Hernan del Valle || Radcliffe Institute
As part of the 2018–2019 Fellows’ Presentation Series at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Hernan del Valle RI ’19 tells the story of how a bunch of doctors ended up rescuing refugees in the Mediterranean Sea, how it’s coming to an end, and what's happening in the background politically in Europe and elsewhere.
As head of humanitarian affairs and advocacy for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), del Valle bared witness to the difficult political challenges that emerged for MSF throughout this operation, not only in its relation with European governments but also engaging with a civil society bitterly divided by debates on migration.
Del Valle has led humanitarian aid operations for the past 15 years. His work has taken him across five continents assisting people affected by armed conflict and forced displacement. He is the 2018–2019 Rita E. Hauser Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University.

Prof Dame Mary Beard - Introduction: Murderous games
Professor Dame Mary Beard, Professor of Classics at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, delivers the Gifford Lecture Introduction: Murderous games. It is the first lecture in the series The Ancient World and us: from fear and loathing to enlightenment and ethics.
This lecture introduces some of those moral and ethical dilemmas in studying the classical world, asking how we understand remote ancient cultures that have come to stand both for the pinnacle of civilisation and for the nadir of corruption and cruelty. Choosing the gladiatorial games as one case study, it takes aim at the sense of moral superiority that we so often display in the face of some of antiquity's worst crimes.
This lecture series explores why the classical world still matters and what ethical dilemmas the study of classics raises (and has always raised). Taking six particular themes, it hopes to show how antiquity can continue to challenge the moral certainties of modernity.
The Undiscovery of Cosmic Deceleration | Robert P. Kirshner || Radcliffe Institute
Robert P. Kirshner, the Clowes Research Professor of Science in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences, set out to find the deceleration of the expansion of the universe, only to find something else: amazingly, the measurements showed the expansion of the universe to be speeding up. The astonishing (un)discovery of cosmic acceleration has now been confirmed from many directions—and attributed to a “dark energy” that dominates the universe, whose nature is a deep mystery at the heart of physics.
