Thank you for taking the time to read our plea for help!
I'm with the Riverside & Great Northern Preservation Society Railway. We're a long time operating Narrow Gauge (Grand Scale) railway located in the Wisconsin Dells, WI. Instead of repeating our whole history here, please visit
I'm going to try and get right to the point. In the last year, we've lost two of our key members that helped keep our railway running (Jack Flemming our head conductor & Gary Gleason Railway Manager & Locomotive Mechanic, you will always be in our Memories!). With this loss, the rebuild of our 128 Engine has been heavily delayed due to just trying to keep the existing running locomotives, well, running.
We have begun the rebuild of the 128 Locomotive, which was built at the railway in the 1940's, eventually sold to the Knoxville Zoo, and recently Donated back to the R&GN in non-running condition (Engine was Rolled Over). We were in High Hopes that we would be able to finish the rebuild of the 128 and bring it into service pulling visitors to the railway before our aging #82 would require a complete rebuild.
Unfortunately, for us due to delays and funding issues, that did not happen. Our main Work-Horse of the Railway & Tourist Season (Which pays our bills and keeps the doors open), the #82, unfortunately did not pass boiler inspection this year, and developed some other mechanical issues. This means that until we can raise ~$50,000 for a new boiler for the #82, it will be Mothballed until such time as we can raise the funds.
While the boiler build of the 128 has begun, we are about $20,000 short of funds for completion of the Engine (Boiler is the Big ticket item for the loco, however, just about everything else will need to be re-manufactured, repaired etc... after this engine has been sitting in storage outside for 30+ years.
With the #82 out of Commission, and the #128 In Progress for quite a while, that leaves the #98 locomotive, Aging as well, but still has another 4-5 years on the existing boiler, as our main work horse for tourist season, and just our Diesel as a partial backup engine.
We also have many other repairs that have been deferred due to funds, such as a new roundhouse turntable.
WHAT WE NEED & How Soon do we need it?
1: The #128 Engine boiler is already started. It would be the quickest to get in running condition, and can pull twice as many coaches as the #82.
$20,000 needed to complete. Need is Urgent.
2: The #82 needs a new boiler. Need is NOT Urgent as the #128 will become our MAIN Workhorse once complete. But the sooner we get get at least something, the sooner the boiler build can start.
$50,000 needed, Need NOT Urgent but starting funds would be nice.
3: Roundhouse Turntable needs a complete rebuild. Once weather warms, we will be removing the top and bracing the existing timbers, though it needs complete replacement within the next 1-2 years. We would like to begin building the turn table at the end of 2017 summer season. We rebuilt our other Turn Table at the end of our line around 2010, and will be building the new one in the same manor, using all steel beams. The replacement should never need to be replaced again.
$5,000 Not Urgent, Very Nice to have.
4: Electric Powered Trolley. The Mothballing of the #82 has made us realize that we need another turn-key engine of some sort for emergencies and additional revenue that is both reliable and turn key operation. We have at our disposal a Master Craftsman, and someone who can build Electric Powered Vehicles. Our wood-craftsman would donate his time for construction, as would the person (Myself) doing the electrical. We are looking to build a Electric Rail-Car/Trolley that can be used as a backup, and as a excursion tour vehicle.
$10,000 VERY URGENT (We can have this unit built in 2 months from start to finish) and can be put to service immediately.
Total minimum to complete the above projects is: $85,000.
We are also offering sponsorship opportunities for the Rail-Car/Trolley Build, naming rights, as well as a place for permanent advertising in the rail-car for a business that donates 100% of the build cost.
I work directly with the railway. I am on the board of directors and volunteer as much time as I can to it's operation, as well as help out as I can with maintenance, repairs and financial.

Mid Continent RR Museum and Train Ride in North Freedom, WI
Film Date: August 21, 2015
Another part of my Wisconsin Dells trip was going to the Mid Continent Railroad Museum in North Freedom, WI, which is just south of Wisconsin Dells. Running on former CNW trackage, their train runs out to a certain point and back to the museum. The engine on this day was the 1256, a Baldwin RS4TC switcher. Enjoy the ride and it's beautiful P3!
