The Virgin Islands National Park
There is a place where the Atlantic touches the Caribbean. An enchanted jewel of sand and sky and sea. Where you can float through waters teaming with life. Wander through echoes of history long past. Or just lie in the sand and watch the world go by. This place is the Virgin Islands National Park, on the island of St. John. And its care is entrusted to us all.

Snorkeling in Hawksnest Bay, Virgin Islands National Park, St John
Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017 overturned, fragmented, abraded and dislodged elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) in Hawksnest Bay. However, signs of recovery are evident. New branches are apparent even on corals turned upside down, and new coral colonies are growing from the bottom. Elkhorn coral was the first coral species to be listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act in 2006.

St. John USVI: Things To Do: US Virgin Islands Travel Vlog (post hurricane) - Episode 2
Plan a day trip to St John in the US Virgin Islands to hike in the national park and relax on amazing beaches!
St John is the smallest of the US Virgin Islands. Over half of this tiny island is a National Park. This means the island is not crowded and full of amazing adventures.
This vlog includes footage from a day trip exploring St John in the US Virgin Islands. We spent time on a beautiful beach, hiked on the island and checked out Mongoose Junction.
We witnessed more damage from the hurricane on St John compared to St Thomas. But most of the island was ready for tourists to return. Don't let this impact your decision of traveling to the US Virgin Islands too much - we fully enjoyed our trip and would love to go back. The island is still beautiful as you can tell from our footage. Highlights include:
- Ferry from St Thomas to St John: 38
- Salt Pond: 2:10
- Ram Head Trail 2:53
- Ram Head Peak 4:34
- Maho Bay 7:10
- Cinnamon Beach 7:22
- Little Cinnamon Beach: 7:54
- Trunk Bay: 8:56
- Mongoose Junction, Cruz Bay: 9:30
*Ignore the timestamp in some of the videos. We didn't realize it was on until after the trip and it was not set correctly.

St John's USVI Caribbean hike
St. John is an idyllic tropical island in the Caribbean known for it's great beaches and hiking trails. While over half the island is national park, I decided to go off the trails and forge my own path. My goal was to start my trek on the souther part of the island (Fish Bay) and work my way to Camelberg Peak in Virgin Islands National Park, one of it's highest points. During mid hike, I was forced to reconsider my route and found myself taking a very different, but extremely satisfying course on this USVI hike. See the video for the whole story.

A rare Bridled Burrfish in Leinster Bay, Virgin Islands National Park, St John, VI
It is unusual to see a Bridled Burrfish around St John. They are smaller than the much more common Porcupinefish and have dark patches above their pectoral fins.
Diving Newfound Bay - St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
Harry and Maria, The Reluctant Tour Guides, take Lady Di, our 13 foot Boston Whaler from Flanagan Island (where we had been spearfishing) around the eastern end of St. John to the secluded Newfound Bay. Newfound is a great dive with most of the coral in relatively shallow water. Right off we encounter a large stingray and there are many other different fish as well along with a large variety of plant life. There are no roads to Newfound Bay, you either have to hike in or go there by boat. It is a popular destination for many of the Day Sails out of Coral Bay. One of my favorite things about this place is that it's not overcrowded, so it's easy to unplug and enjoy nature. So much of the land is protected, and it hasn't been taken over by big companies or hotel chains. Sometimes you can drive past 2 or 3 beaches and not see any other people. I love all of the seafood and great eating options on the island because the food is so fresh. If you're a friendly person, you definitely won't meet a stranger when running into the locals.
