Salton Sea Road Trip: Big Deserted Lake! Salton Sea, California USA
Thoughts on my Salton Sea road trip: Salton Sea is one of the strangest places I've been to. Huge, smelly, and now completely desolate, Salton Sea used to be one of the top weekend vacation spots for Californians. Blog:
Although empty and barren, you can still see pieces of what used to be a very popular tourist destination. Abandoned stores, towns, and cars can be found scattered all around the lake.
Road trip planner: If you plan on taking a Salton Sea road trip, here are some interesting places nearby...
Bombay Beach- Free to enter, nice view, interesting town in front.
Salvation Mountain- Incredible man-made mountain painted in bible verses and words praising God.
Slab City- Hippies in the desert building cool stuff.
Niland- The definition of a small town.
Have you been there? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments.
Go trip yourself!

The southern end of Salton Sea in California is one of the most active geothermal spots in the United States. In this video I quickly show the location of two of the most famous mud pots, and where the virtually unknown new mud pots are located. A few months ago we went to visit the incredible abandoned city called Slab City. It used to be a military base but hundreds of squatters came and made it their home. We went with our friend Justin Escalona and truly had a fascinating experience. We thought the place would be hostile and dangerous when in fact it was inviting and beautiful (in it's own way). Shout-outs to all the description readers out there you know we love you :)

Beautiful California Lake - 7 : Salton Sea
Salton sea is a misnomer - actually a lake in the Desert - but so called because of its size and salinity. It has a surface area of about 350 Sq. miles. The most recent major inflow was created around 1905 when engineers could not stem the flow of Colorado river into the canal for two years as a result of a cut in the river. The evaporation rate now is higher than the fresh water inflow which has resulted in thriving cities around the lake to become deserted and the lake decreasing at a rapid rate. By 2021 it will be a shadow of its former self being significantly reduced in size. The cost of preservation is so high that no effort at present is being made

Salton Sea Navy Base
| While mapping out emergency road access locations for my upcoming walk around the entire Salton Sea shoreline we had confirm that the abandoned Naval Station at Salton Sea was accessible. Our 4WD Jeep got stuck in the sand the previous week trying to reach the shore so on this trip we came in on foot from a dirt road about a half-mile south of the main Navy Base Road.
Because of it's remote location and because it is only reachable on foot or by 4WD, not many people ever get to see this old Navy station.
