Market Day Chelmsford 1949 and 2014
We can learn lots by looking to the past, in this case 65 years ago on 6 May 1949 compared to Summer 2014. Look for buildings unchanged like Cathedral, Shire Hall.
Where High Chelmer Shopping is built upon open land where the open air swimming pool is amongst trees (top right). Sadly now paved over as a car park in 2017. Loads more to see if you look close.

St. Johns Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex
SEE MY HISTORY GROUP ON FACEBOOK :
Half of the population of Chelmsford was born in St. John's Hospital according to the this is Essex website . It closed on 19 November 2010 - making my visit to the place of my birth just in time!
The hospital was originally opened in 1877 - previously it had been the work house. Around 100,000 babies were born there - including me!
I had planned on going there for years - many years. Had I waited any longer then it would not have been there!

My channel on you tube : is one of the most prolific from Poland. I have produced around 1,800 original films.
My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects
Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!
There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!
What a Wonderful World performed at Coach House.

CRHnews - Peter Watkins displays 2MT transmitter International Marconi Day
Marconi veteran Peter Watkins put his 2MT transmitter replica on public show for the first time at the International Marconi Day event in Sandford Mill on April 23, 2016.
Peter will be talking about Marconi's steam yacht Elettra at the Birthplace of Wireless, Hall Street, Chelmsford, on Friday May 6, at 19.00, and of how a 'chance' purchase of a photograph in a Cornish antique shop led him on a voyage of discovery.
Here Peter talks about the historic transmitter and how he managed to acquire the original glass valves and of his hopes of a future upgrade that would see it in action.

CHELMSFORD CITY COUNCIL HAS JUST REPLIED (28/6/17) TO OUR FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST:
What are the reserves for?
The reserves are used for two reasons, namely:
i) Money set aside or saved to pay towards specific items. An example being the Chelmsford Development Reserve which will be used to part fund Riverside development. The project will cost in excess of £20 million.
ii) Money to cover risks to the Council’s finances. An example being an Insurance reserve to cover known and possible claims.
Can it ever be spent – have any of the reserves ever be spent?
Yes, money is spent from reserves for various reasons including: to fund expensive replacement equipment such as freighters or meeting the costs relating to the Government Business Rate retention scheme, Insurance claims, etc.
Is there a limit to how much money can be put in reserve – is it ever ‘enough’ whatever that means?
Chelmsford City Councils reserves are reviewed annually in the budget setting meeting of the Full Council.
External Auditors assess the Council’s financial accounts including the amount of reserves.
They have never been considered excessive.
Does the council ever touch it, which is the criteria for spending it?
Yes, Chelmsford City Council do use the reserves.
Each reserve has a specific purpose and criteria for its use.
An example being the Asset Replacement Reserve which was established to fund expensive replacement equipment such as refuse freighters.
We do not buy these items every year but set money aside in the Asset Replacement Reserve to fund them when required.
This avoids the need for the Council to borrow money to fund equipment.
The council claims it has little money, yet it has millions in reserve – what is the truth?
The Council has been setting aside once-off government grants in reserves to fund improvements in the Chelmsford area, including Riverside pool.
The level of reserves set aside to fund capital expenditure is currently some £10 million which will be spent by 2019/ 2020.
The amount of non-capital reserves is expected to fluctuate between £8 million to £9 million in 2017-2022.
This money is used to cover a number of expenditure items and financial risks, including insurance claims.
The amount should be judged in the context of an annual expenditure by the Council of approximately £94 million.

Chilling Tales of Chelmsford: The Great Fire - CAACF Promo 2018
Curious Spirit Pictures worked with Alan Pamphilon, author and guide of the Chilling Tales of Chelmsford, a walking tour of well known and not so-well known haunted and gruesome locations across Chelmsford, Essex. The promotional piece was produced as part of the Chelmsford Art and Culture Festival. As well as the Chilling Tales of Chelmsford, Alan also holds a variety of other walking tours in Chelmsford that explore the history of the city from the history of Marconi, to the history of specific streets and areas. The history walks of Chelmsford are are run on behalf of the Ideas Hub Chelmsford and part of the ticket price goes to charity.
We produced two promotional pieces for The Chilling Tales of Chelmsford, giving Alfred Hitchcock's style of address and teasing of story from the 1960's theatrical trailer of Psycho and giving it a modern twist with a genre-based soundscape. This piece focuses on the great fire of Chelmsford in 1808.
