Why shoot corvids?
Crows and magpies are omnivorous predators and occur across all habitats. They are major predators of ground-nesting birds, waders and song birds, consuming both eggs and young chicks.
Corvid predation particularly impacts thrushes (White, P.J.C., Stoate, C., Szczur, J. & Norris, K.J. 2014)., Research has shown that the populations of curlew, golden plover and lapwing are significantly improved by controlling corvid numbers (GWCT Research Waders on the Fringe 2010).
Crows also predate on lambs and young livestock, and can damage newly-sown cereal crops, particularly in Winter and Spring when other food sources are scarce.

Canticle II (Benjamin Britten): Christ Church Cathedral Choir School 1970 (Vincent Packford)

This recording of Canticle II (Abraham & Isaac) comes from a privately-issued LP entitled “Music by Benjamin Britten for Boys’ Voices”, recorded in 1970 and issued on the Zeus label, catalogue ZF207. With Patric Judge (treble), David Roy (tenor) and Sidney Watson (piano). Audio restoration by This is one of only two known recordings with a British boy treble singing the upper part.

Patric sang in both the school and cathedral choir; David Roy was a lay clerk at the cathedral and teacher at the school.

At the time of this recording this school also provided the choristers for Exeter and Worcester Colleges (in descending order of precedence) The Cathedral & Worcester College choristers are still educated at the school but the boys choir at Exeter College is long gone

“Abraham and Isaac” (Op. 51, 1952) is the second of five so-called Canticles composed by Benjamin Britten, the other four being “My beloved is mine and I am his” (1947), “Still falls the rain” (1954), “The Journey of the Magi” (1971) and “The Death of Saint Narcissus” (1974). It was written for Peter Pears and Kathleen Ferrier to perform as a fundraiser for the English Opera Group. The text is based on the story of Abraham and Isaac from the Chester Mystery Plays.
