Jeff Daniels in 'Blackbird'
Original tape date: April 15, 2016.
First aired: May 21, 2016.
Theater Talk presents a not-to-be-missed conversation with actor Jeff Daniels, now nominated for a Best Lead Actor in a Play TONY for his role in David Harrower's devastating drama Blackbird, itself nominated for the TONY for Best Revival of a Play.
In an enlightening and often funny interview, Daniels talks about working with actress Michelle Williams and director Joe Mantello to create a fresh and unique performance of the powerful drama, 8 shows a week, every week until their limited run at the Belasco Theatre ends on June 11, 2016. Daniels looks back on his early days, fresh out of a cornfield, as an intern at Marshall W. Mason's Circle Rep Theatre, as well as his discouraging first job on Broadway as an understudy in Albert Innaurato's Gemini. Daniels also discusses his Purple Rose Theatre in Michigan, his Emmy-winning lead in Aaron Sorkin's TV series The Newsroom and why he followed that role up by doing the box-office smash Dumb and Dumber To with Jim Carrey.

In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry (David Morrissey – The Walking Dead, State of Play) is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging?
Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman – Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria) lurk with very different motives for their visit.

LYRICS
You, were the best nights of my life
You, got the light that always shines
I miss the way you that move and the way I get high
When you take me to your heights
Like I'm standing in the sky
I see your subway cars, and your old graffiti, I breathe your air when I land in another city. I'll be that one that's got you printed on my bones, yeah you're all I know
Everywhere I go
I ain't changed at all
Always on my road,
I'm still New York, yeah the only home that I'll ever know
My concrete walls
I'm still New York. I'm still New York.
I wanna drive down riverside.
See the birds flying on the high line
Where the sidewalks burn
And we pray for rain in July
I want the Yankees 99
And the Knicks on a sold out night.
When the curtains close, and the Broadway streets are alive.
I need your heartbeat close don't you ever leave me.
And I breathe your air when I land in another city.
And I'll be that one that's got you printed on my bones
Yeah you're all I know
Everywhere I go
I ain't changed at all
Always on my road,
I'm still New York, yeah the only home that I'll ever know
My concrete walls
I'm still New York. I'm still New York.
BK born and raises I was god sent
I used to hit the courts out in Prospect
Taking long walks on my time spent
Just a kid with that Empire State of mind set
Keep flipping off a blind deck
Dipping from the New York cities finest
Said l’ve been up on my New York shit
Walking down the block with my New York Bitch
I could never leave my city
Ain’t nothing like it
Even if I do though
I could never hide it
Top down on the West side when I’m driving
East side be the only side that I’m riding
I’m still New York
I’m still New York
I’m still New York
I’m still New York
Everywhere I go
I ain't changed at all
Always on my road,
I'm still New York, yeah the only home that I'll ever know
My concrete walls

The Book of Mormon Musical—should Mormons embrace it or eschew it?
Look out Aussies! The multi-award winning musical The Book of Mormon is going down under.
The show has its Australian premiere in Melbourne today--Jan. 18, 2017. It is expected that this will most likely be followed by a tour of the country. The State Premier, Daniel Andrews, previously announced the news on his Facebook page, saying “I’m thrilled we’re bringing the most successful piece of theatre in the world today to Victoria.”
The Australian production will be co-directed by the original creative team of Tray Parker and choreographer Casey Nicholaw.
The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway in 2011 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater. A London production swiftly followed opening at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre in 2013. This blockbuster show that scooped a staggering nine Tony and four Olivier Awards sold out for an impressive 180 weeks in a row on Broadway and has broken countless box office records. With excitement already building for this most hotly anticipated of musicals The Book of Mormon’s reign of glory looks set to continue.
Similar to New York and London, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) have a large presence in Melbourne to welcome the attention to their faith.
The Church has launched an initiative helping people understand how the book itself has helped change lives for the better. What’s inside the Book of Mormon? shows people that the Book of Mormon is much more than a musical—it’s a way to find comfort, guidance, and direction in life. The hashtag is #DiscoverWhatsInside.
The initiative helps people in Australia learn from fellow Aussies (who are Mormon) how the stories, teachings, and principles found throughout the Book of Mormon can help us all find peace and happiness in life.

2. Set up of Rosemarie Li
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rosemarie Li, Vox Pop:
It is so fun and invigorating. It takes my spirit and makes it just soar. It's just fantastic. It's a fantastic way to workout. I don't even realize I'm working out. I just feel free and I express myself and I move and I've noticed the changes in my body. I felt more flexible. I felt more shredded up and I've just enjoyed myself.

17. Set up of Denise Faye
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Denise Faye, Movie dance choreographer:
I think that people love it because it's music that you can be passionate about. I think it's a certain kind of body movement that begs you to loose inhibitions, use your shoulders, use your hips, be free, you know. And you don't have to think about twenty more reps of something. You're not sedentary. You're just moving, and you can do no wrong, which I think we all like because you know, who wants to be critiqued all the time about you know, am I standing up straight? You don't want to stand up straight. So that's really fun and the music is incredibly compelling.
