Heavy snow causes transport problems in Croatia and Bosnia
(27 Feb 2018) A sudden freeze and heavy snowfall at the tail end of a relatively mild winter caused traffic disruptions, locked people indoors and prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency in parts of Croatia and Bosnia on Tuesday.
The mountainous Gorski Kotar region in western Croatia has been buried in over two metres (6.5 feet) of snow, and clearing services are rushing to clear the roofs of houses in the area to save them from collapsing.
About 1,000 Croatian soldiers have joined efforts to clear the snow in the worst-affected areas.
In Bosnia, snow clogged roads connecting the capital Sarajevo with the southern part of the country, while authorities in several cities in the western Krajina region declared state of emergency and ordered schools to remain shut.
The Arctic storm which has hit Europe has caused temperatures to fall well below freezing, with a low of minus-20 degrees centigrade in some parts of the Balkans.
The freeze is expected to continue for much of the week.

Our visit Zagreb travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Croatian), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting churches, parks, the old town, quirky neighborhoods, museums and a hockey game. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Zagreb tourism brochure, Zagreb itinerary or Zagreb, Croatia city tour also known as Zagreb, Hrvatska.
10 Things to do in Zagreb, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our travels in Croatia brought us to Zagreb known for its lively street markets, vast green spaces, and varied architecture that spans numerous movements, we reached the capital and hit the ground running. In this video we’re going to show you some fun things to do in Zagreb, as well as share our favourite place for sampling the most delicious truffle dishes:
From the main square you have the Flower Market, and if you head up the steps, that leads to Zagreb’s Central Market.
Zagreb Cathedral is one the city’s main landmarks. This is the largest sacral building in the Gothic style southeast of the Alps, and it’s pretty easy to spot the spires wherever you are in the city.
Our walk through the Upper Town eventually lead us to Tkalčićeva. These days you’ll find a lively street lined with restaurants, cafes and bars.
We reached what may be the most memorable museum in the whole world: The Museum of Broken Relationships. The museum is a global crowd-sourced project that deals with heartbreak. Inside you’ll find curious objects with a corresponding story.
St. Mark’s Church bears the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left-hand side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.
To enjoy city views of the Lower Town there are some great vantage points along the promenade.
On our way down from the Upper Town, we walked through Zagreb’s famed Stone Gate. Once the eastern gate into the medieval settlement now houses a small chapel.
Let’s take a break from all the sightseeing to introduce you to one of our favourite restaurants in Zagreb when it comes to truffle dishes
And craving more views of the city, we then went up Zagreb 360.
Known as the Green Horseshoe, this park was named after Milan Lenuci who came up with the idea of creating connected green spaces right in the downtown. The horseshoe is home to several museums, galleries and archives.
If you’re into hockey and you visit Zagreb during the season, you can catch a game in the city. We watched Medveščak Zagreb play.
And that’s it for our visit to Zagreb! We hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that you got a few ideas of things to see, eat and do on your own visit.

Vertical bike stands aimed to stop thieves

9-10. Close of pedals being locked
11. Close of pad-locked pedals
12. SOUNDBITE: (Croatian) Radovan Marin, inventor
The stand has holders only for the pneumatics of the bicycle, I mean tyres. So, the construction itself doesn't touch any other part of your bike, and it simply cannot be damaged while it is being put into the frame, taken out of it, or during the time it's parked.
13-14. Various close of registration certificates
15-18. Various of woman parking bike
19. SOUNDBITE: (Croatian) Lara Crnecki, biker
At first sight it looks a little complicated, but when you get used to the movement there is no problem. This is what you have to take care of: no pulling or forcing, you just push the pedal gently and it just slides down.
20. Tilt down to parked bike
21. SOUNDBITE: (Croatian) Radovan Marin, inventor
The usual weight on this lever is between 5 and 7 kilograms, depending on a bike. So, due to the construction, any individual, young, old, female or male, is capable to lift it in the air easily.
22. Wide of workshop
23-24. Various close of Marin using screwdriver
25. Mid of spare bike parts
26. Exterior of city council
27. Wide of standard bike parking stands
28. SOUNDBITE: (Croatian) Stjepan Matos, Assistant Manager, city office for urban planning
We can't put some 5,000 new bike stands on the streets just like that. But we listen to bikers' associations, we respect their needs and follow their suggestions.
29. Wide shot vertical bike stands
30. Tilt down from vertical bike stand
31. Midshot tire in bike stand
32. SOUNDBITE: (Croatian) Vitomir Puhovski, janitor
A neighbour left his bike here for a month. He even forgot to lock it. And nothing happened. People came and looked at it, tried to figure out how it could be taken out, but nothing. There is simply no way to move it.

LEAD IN:
Bicycle lovers know that parking their bikes, and leaving them unattended, comes at a risk.
But a Croatian engeneer has come up with a new idea - one that is aimed at thwarting would-be thieves without the use of heavy locks and chains.
Thanks to his Vertical Bicycle Parking Device, cyclists now have a safe and easy way to secure their bikes without using a great deal of space.
STORYLINE:
The Croation capital of Zagreb isn't very friendly to cyclists.
Like most big cities, it's still largely devoted to cars.
There have been efforts to clean up the city, and make it a healthier place by using public transportation and human-powered vehicles.
But cyclists still have to be wary of thieves, and the availability of parking space is limited.
Radovan Marin knows the struggle all too well.
For years he biked through the city's busy streets, constantly searching for somewhere to store his bicycle.
But now, thanks to his vertical bike stand, cyclists have a safe and easy place to park their vehicle.
The bike stand, which is made of steel, is very durable and lightweight.
Marin, the vertical bike stand's creator, says that his design locks onto the tires without touching any part of the bike's frame, which prevents the stand from scratching or damaging the bike.
He designed the stand with both international regulations and user's needs in mind.
And cyclists have found that it's very easy to use.
Though it may seem daunting, Marin insists that anyone can use it.

New tool designed to create vintage look wavy hair
(18 Apr 2010)
AP Television
Zagreb, Croatia, 23 February 2010

2. Pull out of wave tool being applied to client''s hair
3. Close of upper part of wave tool being put on red hair
4. Wide of interior of the Mila hair salon
5. Mid of hairdresser combing hair waves
6. Wide of Ivan Nisjnic, inventor of the wave tool, checking the waved hair
7. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ivan Nisjnic, Inventor:
I got the idea from the waves of our Adriatic sea, actually while barbequeuing near it. There were aluminium plates with ribbed and wavy edges too. It all just made me think of the iron scissors used in hair curling. So I started playing with shapes. Later on we started seriously experimenting with different aluminium pieces to get the hair waves looking as much as possible like the ones of the sea. And here is the result. These modules can be easily combined. They can be put together either beside each other horizontally, or vertically depending on the hair length. So you can have a real wave that goes on indefinitely.
8. Tilt up from wave tool to two hairdressers drying client''s long hair
9. Close of lock of hair being sprayed
10. Mid of the wave tool being put on a lock of hair
11. Tilt down of stylist using hair dryer on long lock of hair in wave tool
12. Mid of the waved long lock being finished
13. Pull out of long lock of waved hair
14. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ana Visnjic, Hairstylist:
Clients always want something new. They also want to have the best result in the shortest amount of time, since everybody is always in a hurry. So how can we do that? These modules are perfect for this. They are easy to use, the hair is done quickly without any complication and you get a very appealing styling, nice, romantic. At the end you look beautiful and make a great impression with no effort at all.

21. Mid of three black and white photos of waved hair
22. Mid of two women looking at exhibits
23. Pan from gallery to exhibits on the wall
24. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Mare Milin, Photographer:
The most difficult thing in the world is to remember the simplest things. Everybody can say: hey it''s so easy to do, I could have made it too! Well, they couldn''t have. It is like the basic principle of the Bauhaus style that said less is more. And that simplicity for me as an artist is fascinating.
25. Mid of catalogue and a glass
26. Mid of woman reading catalogue
27. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ira Payer, Graphic designer:
It is a genuine designer''s project as it includes a real innovation in the field of production design and it has a considerable potential in the industrial production. On the other hand it can be really used in practice as it is made in a user-friendly way. And it is pretty inspiring for any creative person involved in fashion.
28. Close of stylist cutting cascades into blond bob
29. Mid of client with blond bob, seen in the mirror having hair cut
30. Close of scissors cutting into blond hair
31: SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Ivan Visnjic, Inventor:
We have always simply wanted to do it our own way, to be special, and most of all different. Not better then the others, just different. Our motto is: look different and you will be different.

SHOSHIN INmusic Festival, Zagreb 2013 - 'Same To Me'
Words and Music written by Pete Haley © 2013 Shoshin
Shoshin performing 'Same To Me' in Croatia at the INmusic festival in Zagreb 2013
LYRICS:
SAME TO ME
Walkin down a terraced row, red brick houses all in rows
Splattered paint, ripped up curtains, broken windows.
Angry BNP men screaming out their frustration,
waving their signs that warn about an invasion,
And you say What man.. while they're screaming
Just look around! Damn Islamic immigrants are filling the town.
Building up ghettos they don't want no integration,
They serve their own culture while they're exploiting the nation!
I shook my head, said theres a reason that they all stick together,
In a foreign land with your people close by it's better,
So what they keep to their selves and keep their kids scared of Satan,
But in a couple of years you know those kids will turn native,
And it's a long road back to strict and old behaviour.
You move for the money, the money just has to change you.
Organised religion ends in spiritual failure,
The Mosque will stand empty just like the Church of Your Saviour.
And everybody looks about the same to me,
everybody sounds about the same to me
Calm down try to make some sense of it,
I think your missing what my message is.
I just said everybody looks about the same to me,
everybody sounds about the same to me,
Calm down try to make some some sense of this,
I think you're missing what my message is.
And you can see it, feel it, read it in papers
The fear spreads, people dread, then become haters.
And thats the way the government would like you to feel,
So you don't question all the killing in the countries we steal.
And right wing Britain feels so threatened by muslim Asians?
They fill a few streets, but can you call them crusaders?
It's the media deceiving you, with tension that they're feeding you,
While all the nation's main news stations filter what they read to you.
To stop this, block this, manifestation
Of a planet with no borders and a world with one nation.
All those right wing wallys, say unity is folly
and everything they do and say is gonna make us sorry.
So I thought about it all a lot, dreamed I reached a mountain top,
Looked up to the heavens and cried out if there is a God?
Could you help, could you help with this?
I think we're missing what your message is!
And God said All you Motherf*****s look the same to me,
All you motherf*****s sound the same to me.
Calm down try to make some sense of it,
I think you're missing what my message is.
And God said All you motherf*****s look the same to me,
all you motherf*****s sound the same to me.
Calm down try to make some sense of this,
I think you're missing what my message is.

Bojan Bogdanovic All 164 Three-Pointers Full Highlights (2018-19 Season Three-ilation)
Bojan Bogdanovic stood outside of the airport in Zagreb, trying to hail a taxi. A darkening sky threatened to turn the unpleasant rain shower into a drenching downpour at any moment, so he was grateful when a cab finally pulled up to him. He threw his small amount of luggage into the back and climbed into the passenger seat, not knowing or caring how exorbitant the fare might be.
Where to? the cabbie asked. Even with these short two words, Bojan couldn't help but notice that the man's teeth were almost all missing.
If the final destination of his journey had been the home of his parents, then the cabbie's question would have been very easy to answer, but that wasn't his destination at all. Instead, Bojan's answer to the man was another question. Do you know where the gypsy encampments are?
The man gave Bojan a appraising look before speaking. Why do you care? You're not one of them. Just leave them be.
I can't leave them be, Bojan answered. Do you see this? He lowered his head and pointed at his scalp.
Hair's a bit thin on top, but what's that matter, anyway?
Long ago, my ancestors were afflicted by the gypsy curse of baldness. Only by visiting them and making amends can I hope to spare my lineage from the terrible fate which befell me. Bojan dragged his fingers through his diminished hair in frustration at his.
I can take you to the countryside where the Roma live, the cabbie said. But the fare will be expensive.
I have money, Bojan replied. Just take me there!
--
Bojan stepped out of the taxi, feeling slightly woozy after the bumpy trip down the hilly dirt road that had split off from the main road many miles prior. There in the valley below him were the people he was seeking: the Roma. Their camp was primitive and dusty, and there wasn't much activity in the afternoon heat. After tipping the cabbie generously and sending him on his way, Bojan carefully made his way down the path to the little settlement.
A young woman, seeing Bojan's approach, quickly retreated into one of the huts. Apparently as a result of an unheard and unseen conversation, a different person emerged from the hut, an older gentleman with white hair and a crooked gait aided by a cane. He walked up to Bojan slowly. We are distrustful of outsiders. What do you want of us? he said in decent, if accented, Croatian.
Over a century ago, my great-great-great-great-great grandfather reneged on a bet he had made with the Roma people, Bojan began. By the accounts of my family, he was a drunkard, a lowlife, and a swindler. Not once did that man make an honest living doing an honest day's work. He was also a gambling addict, and spent many hours playing the games of chance offered by the traveling gypsy carnivals, making unwise wagers while drunk on cheap spirits. It was on one of these games that he failed to pay back what he owed, and as punishment, the Roma cursed his family line with early-onset baldness.
The old man, who had been listening carefully, shrugged. There are much worse things to be cursed with, boy. He was let off easy.
For the second time that day, Bojan presented his balding head and pointed to it. You say that, but my life has been ruined by this curse. My confidence has vanished. My happiness has turned to despair. I cannot even bear to show myself to my lovely Lucija, lest she cast eyes upon my baldness and leave me for another man. That is why I come to you. To help lift this curse once and for all.
I am well-versed in the magic of my ancestors, but you must pay my fee if you wish to harness my skills of sorcery, replied the old man.
Bojan's heart lightened and he reached into his pockets to withdraw thick wads of large-denomination cash in many currencies. This money should allow you and your clan to live comfortably for many years, he said.
This is not enough, the old man said, leafing through the bills after they were handed to him.
Bojan had expected that mere cash would not be adequate. He unzipped his bag and overturned it upon the dusty ground. Articles of wood, bronze, silver, and gold spilled out. These are all my family's treasures. Among them are trinkets and heirlooms stolen from the Roma people, now rightfully returned. He watched anxiously as the old man sorted through them, sometimes nodding, sometimes shaking his head.
Finally, the old man stood back up. Your payments are sufficient. I will remove the curse. He lifted his hands and said words in the Roma tongue.
Bojan couldn't tell that anything had changed. Then, he felt a strange sensation on his scalp. Within a minute, hair was hanging in his eyes. Another minute passed, and his hair was the length of a woman's. The smooth brown locks spilled forth from his head like a fountain.
It's over! The curse is lifted! Bojan yelled exuberantly, causing other villagers to peek outside to see what the fuss was. My hair...my hair has returned!

They did a great job like I really like what they did they even put a little bit of cream around the sides and they were using their razors, splashing some alcohol on after. Like these guys knew what they were doing. So you got pampered. Yeah it was a really good price I think it was 5 or 6 Euros or something like that. Oh nice. In local currency it was 40 Kuna. I remember now. Anyways today is a travel day. We haven't didn't spend much time in Split. We only had 4 nights here. Mmmhmm. Um and so we're moving on to Dubrovnik. Mmmhmm. Really excited about that. This is the one city in Croatia that we really really want to visit. Yeah. Everyone raves about it. Everyone raves about it. We've been watching a couple of videos on it and it just looks absolutely stunning. So we're really excited to be going there today. And yeah we're taking a bus. But anyways before we do that let's give you a tour of our apartment. Yep. So as you know we're traveling with my parents. My Mom and Dad and also Val.
So we got this was our coolest apartment so far. We got three bedrooms that had 3 bathrooms. What a luxury. Yeah we each had our own bathroom. Like my parents had their own bathroom, we did and Val had her own bathroom.
Alright Audrey and Pumpy. We are about to say fare thee well to Split. What did you guys think of this place?
Uh beautiful little coastal town. Yeah. Great for sailors, great for walkers, great for cyclists.
And in the summertime probably great for beaches as well. Yeah. This time of year it was just perfect for us because we were leaving cold Italy. Yeah. And uh leaving it behind. It was when we left Venice we were escaping the Beast from the East in terms of weather and we came here and it was at least like 14 or 15 degrees warmer.
What did you think Audrey? I really enjoyed it. I'm still thinking about that burger with the truffle mayo. Yeah. That was the highlight right there. And we also had that great seafood meal as well with fish. So it is a great launching point. It is also not too far to Dubrovnik. We only have a four and a half hour bus ride. And do you remember the price of those tickets?
16 Euros each. Oh yeah. Because we asked everyone for money. It came to 16 Euros I forget the price in Kuna but yeah it literally came to 16 Euros per person. The two days that we have in Dubrovnik are scheduled to be sunny. Tomorrow and the next day so yeah we'll make the most of those. Really looking forward to it. They say Dubrovnik is the jewel of Croatia the pearl of the adriatic.
