Thirsty Monk Pub & Brewery | NC Weekend | UNC-TV
With its basement bar, main floor, and Top of the Monk upstairs bar, the Thirsty Monk on Patton Avenue in Asheville provides three different ways to enjoy Belgian and American craft beers, as well as cocktails.
Asheville Bars Equipped with Red Cards
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- If youre out drinking, you wont want a bartender to give you a red card.
The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission gave Asheville bars red coasters. If you get one, it means a bar has cut you off. Its illegal for bars to serve somebody who has had too much to drink.
ABCs Chief of Law Enforcement said the coasters will help bartenders, because if a customer has a red coaster, he or she cannot try to get a drink from a different bartender.
Lexington Avenue Brewery is happy to have them.
I think it would be a little more subtle, and people would tend not to be as insulted maybe, Brent Ludwig said, a LAB bartender.
The red coasters were inspired by red cards in soccer, which players receive when theyre ejected.

What Caused the Massive Charter Cable Outage?
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Charter Communications suffered what it calls a massive cable TV outage on Saturday night -- every customer in the area lost service.
The big question after the weekend is what happened? Before 9 pm, TVs stopped working. The outage spanned multiple states.
Biltmore Park's Thirsty Monk had TVs go out one at-a-time. A server named the outage.
The big duh, because why would that happen? Why would it be an especially on such an important evening? asked Susan Irizarry.
When the TV's went out, so did Irizarry's customers.
We had a couple people leave, just because they were attempting to watch a sporting event. I think it was basketball. They just stood up and walked to a different restaurant, Irizarry said.
The service cut out in the last quarter of an NBA playoff game 7.
Chris Paul hit the game winning shot on one-foot, because had torn his hamstring earlier in the game. It was an amazing feat so for whoever was watching missed that? I'd be upset. I'd definitely be upset, said one customer.
Many feel the same way. The outage coincided with the start of the most hyped boxing fight of this century. People were paying $100 to watch Manny Pacquiao fight Floyd Mayweather.
When we called Charter and asked to speak with a spokesperson we were directed to the Law enforcement special response team. They were gone for the day.
Saturday night, a hacker group called Lizard Squad tweeted they were responsible for causing the outage. After 11 p.m., with the outage still going, they tweeted Looks like we hit the cable companies harder than we thought. LOL, oops.
What happened remains unclear. A Charter representative said they're still looking into it.

Ringing In 2014
Celebrations are taking place all over Asheville tonight.
In one place in particular, New Year's Eve history is being made. The Thirsty Monk in Biltmore Park is dropping a keg at midnight.
It's hooked-up to electric winch. It's actually about 23 feet tall. It's timed to drop and land at the bottom exactly at midnight, and once that hits, the lights will light-up, and it'll be 2014, said General Manager Dylan Mandeville of Thirsty Monk.
Mandeville says Asheville needs a Beer City USA take on New York's Times Square and that this is the place to do it.
We're one of the greatest beer bars in the country, and you know, we want that to be the forefront of what we do here and what better way to do that than a keg drop, said Mandeville.
The steaks are sizzling at the Market Place downtown. Just one of the many restaurants booked solid on this busiest of holiday occasions.
New Year's Eve is definitely, hands down, the biggest night in Asheville for every restaurant, and definitely for us at the market place, said William Dissen of The Market Place.
They're busy stocking the bar at Mack Kells out on Tunnel Road.
'll be right here enjoying several beverages and drinking responsibly and taking a cab home, said Dot Eckerich.
That's a wise move on this final night of 2013.
Have a designated driver. Have a cab, get a room somewhere. Just don't get behind the wheel of a vehicle. It's just not worth the risk. There's too many other avenues and too many other ways to be safe, said Trooper Gene Williamson of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Highway Patrol warns there will be checkpoints.

New Belgium's Huge Shipment Arrives
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The final piece of a major shipment by new Belgium arrived at the Craven Street construction site Saturday morning. The brew vessel was delivered safely and it took quite a production to get it there.
Several Asheville Police officers, state police officers and NCDOT workers escorted the 20-foot long lauter tun through Asheville.
It looked otherworldly. It looked like a spacecraft coming, Bonnie Parker, a neighbor, said.
On November 10, the 5,300 gallon unit left Germany for a spot in New Belgium's brewing line. An employee explained the lauter tun will separate water from the grains during the brewing process.
For some neighbors, it's a huge sign of progress.
We're all excited about the brewery. We have some questions and concerns about the roads. But it's exciting, Parker said.
New Belgium employees say after the vessel is installed, roofs will be added to the structures.
We've been working a lot with the immediate neighborhood and they've been great at giving us feedback and letting us know how things are affecting them, Susanne Hackette, Community Relations for New Belgium, said.
Representatives from New Belgium have been holding small community gatherings during their construction process.
Hackette says a new shipment of fermentation vessels will arrive in March.
The company will also be hiring for about 50 positions throughout the year. For employment opportunities, click here.

Asheville Run to Celebrate Boston Marathon
Outside the Thirsty Monk pub in Biltmore Park, one hundred thirty runners gathered wearing caps emblazoned with the words 'Boston Marathon. Others had on t-shirts with the now familiar credo, Boston Strong.
Runners could choose either a four or seven mile jog through the park and the neighborhood surrounding it. The event organized by local running group Foot RX Nation as a charity event to raise money for, and remember victims of the bombings at the Boston Marathon last year.
I watched a little bit of it today, and it was great to see an American win for the first time in twenty years, said Latisha Cannon, who drove in from Marion to run in the Asheville race.
Thomas Roth of Asheville ran in the Boston Marathon last year. Roth remembers fatefully kicking up his pace in the last six miles in Boston, that had him finish sixteen minutes ahead of the blasts.
I was about a block down and a block over from the finish line when I heard the blasts, said Roth. I had my wife and daughter there and my sister and my mom. All I could think about was getting them out of harm's way.
For Monday's run in Biltmore Park, Roth proudly wore his 2013 Boston Marathon Jersey he brought home from the race.
It means a lot in terms of the effort I went through to get up there to get to Boston and qualify to run it, said Roth. What I'm doing now is training again for the next marathon in June, and trying to get back up there in 2015 so I can get another one of these.
I know western North Carolina has about six or seven representatives running in the Boston Marathon today, they had a great race, said Julie Blanda who organized the charity race in Biltmore Park. She knows the Boston Marathon images stay with runners in Monday's race as an inspiration to remember why the sport means so much.
To get together with runners, and have a good time, said Blanda. And just remember why we run. It's because we can.

Restaurants support NC, Brunch in push for Sunday morning alcohol sales
Restaurants are supporting a new push to adjust the hours that alcohol can be sold on Sundays.
A group of state senators proposed the legislation, referred to as the Brunch Bill, last week.
Part of the bill would allow local officials to move up the time restaurants can start serving alcohol on Sundays from noon to 10 a.m.
Employees at one of the Biscuit Head restaurants in Asheville support the earlier start time.

That's extra money, and that's good, but secondly we just kind of think it's a ridiculous law, Biscuit Head regional manager Michael Wester said. I think it's just an old law and it's time to change.
The proposal is supported by the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.
North Carolina needs to get on board with that, Biscuit Head customer Karen Funk said.
Social conservative groups disagree with the proposals and say there'll be more alcohol-related injuries and crashes if the time is expanded.
It's their right not to serve and that's fine, and I think it should be the right of every business to do what they want, Wester said.

Beer City: How Asheville Became Beer City
Tony Kiss, the beer reporter, has been following the local craft brew scene since 1994. He traces the history of Asheville craft beer from the launch of Highland Brewing Company through this year's announcements that both New Belgium Brewing and Sierra Nevada Brewing will build east coast expansion breweries here and Oskar Blues Brewing will build an operation in Brevard. With 10 craft breweries already operating in Buncombe County, and smaller nano breweries continuing to come on line, Asheville is poised to become the east coast craft beer center of the United States.
