Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Torre dell'Orologio
The clock tower is centrally located on Corso Umberto , next to Piazza IX Aprile. Because of its position, the tower is also called Porta di Mezzo and separates the medieval village from the classical and Hellenistic part.
Built the first time in the twelfth century on the remains of an older defensive wall construction, dating back to the fourth century BC, was razed to the ground by the invasion of the French troops of Louis XIV in 1676. In 1679, at the behest of the Taorminesi, the Tower was rebuilt and on that occasion was also placed the large clock that today characterizes it.
A particularity is that the bells of the Tower are played at the party on the day of the election of the mayor and on the occasion of the procession on the day of the patron saint San Pancrazio that occurs on July 9th.

Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater still used today. Near the theater, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.
Taormina is a small city and comune in the Metropolitan City of Messina on the east coast of the island of Sicily, Italy, midway between Messina and Catania. Taormina has been a tourist destination since the 19th century. Its beaches, the most famous being 'Isola Bella' are accessible via an aerial tramway built in 1992 on the Ionian sea and via highways from Messina in the north and Catania in the south.
Just south of Taormina is the Isola Bella, a nature reserve; and further south, situated beside a bay, is the popular seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Tours of the Capo Sant' Andrea grottos are also available. The village of Taormina is perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants, and antique shops. Taormina is approximately a forty-five-minute drive away from Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna.

Little Sicily
TAORMINA NEEDS LOVE
Sai cos'è la nostra vita? La tua e la mia? Un sogno fatto in Sicilia. Forse stiamo ancora lì e stiamo sognando ( Leonardo Sciascia)

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Palazzo Corvaja
Palazzo Corvaia (sometimes spelt Palazzo Corvaja) is a medieval palace in Taormina, Sicily, Italy, dating from the 10th century. It was principally built at the end of the 14th century and is named after one of the oldest and most famous families of Taormina which owned it from 1538 to 1945.
On four main floors and constructed around a courtyard, the Moorish Gothic palazzo is crenellated. The principal floor has fenestration of pairs of lancet windows divided by columns. The courtyard walls are decorated by reliefs illustrating The Creation. Today the palazzo is used as an exhibition centre.
Corvaja Palace, which is located in Piazza Badia in Taormina, Sicily at right angles to the church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, was originally built in the 10th century by the Arabs (Saracens) who then ruled Taormina, having conquered the town in 902. The origins of the palazzo incorporate an early Saracen fortress dating from the 10th century, which in turn was constructed on Roman foundations. It was subsequently added to over various periods up until the 15th century. Its main body is an Arabic tower, and it has an inner courtyard where the Arabic influence can be seen in the arched windows and doorways.
A 13th century staircase leads up to the first floor and an ornamental balcony which overlooks the courtyard. In 1410, Corvaja Palace housed the Sicilian Parliament. It was renovated in 1945 by Armando Dillo, and as of 2009 it is the seat for the Azienda Autonoma Soggiorno e Turismo.

TAORMINA SICILY NEEDS LOVE
Sicily Island Of Light - Sicilia isola di luce Art Documentary
Written by Marella di Grande
Translated by Taisia Gullo
Sicily is a fertile island, thus plundered from age to age by waves of invaders and still now treated badly also by Sicilian people. Sicily needs love and its plea is evident through Claudio Arezzo di Trifiletti's photos: decorations of buildings, friezes and the sculpture of monuments, churches and fountains -stratified over the centuries- convey their yearning for love. The project Sicily needs love is a tour of Sicily with stops in the main cities in order to immortalize the details of the works of art; details which often are not considered by the Sicilians themselves, whose eyes are unaware and dulled by the greyness of ignorance or by dangerous indifference, and fed by frenzy of daily mediocrity. The videos show the cities' awakening in the playful gestures of the amoretti, in the hideous visages and the contorted gaze of the baroque decorations; their poking at the mythological sculptures of the fountains; and their blending with the architectural lines of churches, sometimes convoluted and sometimes essential. The aim of these pictures is to create an artistic documentary or to compose a subliminal short trough a quick sequence; moreover, all these images end with a last frame of ecstatic Madonna which breathes hope into those passersby who have the good fortune to glance at them.
SUBLIMINAL ART TAORMINA
Do you know what our life is? Yours and mine? A dream made in Sicily. Maybe we are still there and we are dreaming
(Leonardo Sciascia)
Taormina is the jewel of Sicily: you can gather it from its charming name and its noble aspect conveyed essentially by surrounding landscape of Etna which slopes down until the turquoise sea. The city is unique is its intertwining of precious architectural and urban elements, consequence of its previous rules. The Greek Theatre, the Roman Naumachiai, the Saracen Castle, the Arabian Necropolis, the gothic Palace of the dukes of Saint Stephen, the Norman Door of the Stroke, the Aragonese Palace Corvaja and Palace Ciampoli until the baroque of the Four Fountains, the buildings of Corso Umberto and of the Saint Joseph Church are some of the examples of the various historic epochs which came one after the other increasing Taormina's splendour.
Sicily is the land of oranges, a land full of flowers where the air in spring is heady with perfume...but what makes it an essential place to visit and unique in the world is the fact that from one end to the other it can be described as a strange and divine museum of architecture (Guy de Maupassant)

Porta Messina is a city gate along the pedestrian way. There are a lot of restaurants and eateries along the way. Historic doorway to the city. Easy to find. Located along the main pedestrian walkway. Once outside the city, watch out for the cars.
Porta Messina is a part of the ancient circuit of walls with a triple fortification system of the city. It was restored in the early 19th century under the name of Porta Ferdinanda after the Ferdinand IV of Bourbon.
A short visit is plenty to the gate but it frames the countryside and the surrounding hills- it gives you a sense of what it would have been like to leave or come into the city in ancient times.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Piazza IX Aprile
Piazza IX Aprile is located right in the center of Corso Umberto. The square is known for the breathtaking view of the azure Ionian Sea and of the Mount Etna. Lined with pricey cafés and brimming with visitors and caricature artists, it's the best place to sit back with a cappuccino and enjoy the relaxed resorty ambience of Taormina.
The square was named after the 9th of April, 1860, when mass in the Taormina cathedral down the street was interrupted to announce that Garibaldi had landed at Marsala (on the far side of the island) to begin his conquest of Sicily that made it part of Italy
Actually, the news proves false. In fact Garibaldi landed at Marsala exactly one month later, on 9 May 1860. However, the inhabitants of Taormina wanted to recall that date dedicating the most beautiful square.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Madonna della Rocca
Built inside a grotto on Monte Tauro, this small church was founded by the abbot Francesco Raineri in around 1640. According to legend, the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus appeared to a young shepherd who had taken refuge in the grotto during a sudden storm. The lofty view from the church's terrace is almost as heavenly, taking in Taormina and the deep-blue Ionian Sea beyond.
The Madonna della Rocca church is located on the mountain overlooking Taormina, a few steps from the Saracen castle. The church of Madonna della Rocca, so called because built on the rock, was founded by Abbot Francesco Raineri with the help of the Archbishop of Messina Geronimo Venero, around 1640. Next to the Sanctuary of S. Maria della Rocca, there was a small monastery (of the order of the Basilian), now abandoned, in which religious retreated to pray and do penance as a hermit.
The origin of the Sanctuary of S. Maria della Rocca is also linked to a legend. It says that a young shepherd boy from the nearby village of Mola was feeding the flock on the mountain, when suddenly a storm forced him to take refuge with the sheep in the nearby cave. While lightning terrorized him and he was about to lose courage, he saw a beautiful lady dressed in blue who comforted him and reassured him that the sun would appeared soon.
In fact, the storm ended soon. The parents were worried about the fate of their son, so they ran to go and look on the castle rocks, but they found him cheerfully next to the sheep, who had gathered around him. The boy told him what he had suffered, and what he had seen in the cave. A lot of people wanted to see the place and they noticed that on the rock, right where the shepherd boy saw the lady dressed in blue, was impressed the figure of the Madonna, which they called Madonna della Rocca.

Porta Catania di Taormina is one of two ancient entrances of the city (along with Porta Messina at the other end of Corso Umberto). Today’s look is the final result of various changes and restoration, the most recent one is from the 15th century, made by the Aragonese.
Porta Catania di Taormina is one of the main gateways that tour groups surge through to explore the Corso Umberto. A good and busy place to meet. There is a post office and drop of spot for taxis. Porta Catania is at one end of the main street and Porta Messina is at the other end of town around ten minutes walk along
There are two gateways to the central part of the village of Taormina. The Porta Catania is the less ornate of the two. It is not much more than a stone archway.

Spectacularly perched on the side of a mountain, Taormina is one of Sicily's most popular summer destinations, a chi-chi resort town popular with holidaying high-rollers and those wanting a taste of Sicilian dolce vita. Granted it's unashamedly touristy and expensive, but the town merits a couple of days for its stunning ancient theatre, people watching and breathtaking vistas.
Founded in the 4th century BC, Taormina enjoyed great prosperity under the Greek ruler Gelon II and later under the Romans, but fell into quiet obscurity after being conquered by the Normans in 1087. Its reincarnation as a tourist destination dates to the 18th century, when northern Europeans discovered it on the Grand Tour. Among its fans was DH Lawrence, who lived here between 1920 and 1923.
Taormina gets extremely busy in July and August and virtually shuts down between November and Easter. Ideally, head up in April, May, September or October.
One of Italy's most historic holiday resorts, Taormina is a picturesque small town perched on a slope high above the Ionian Sea on the eastern coast of Sicily. A popular and fashionable destination for well over a century, Taormina's hotels and restaurants are very experienced at welcoming foreign tourists. Many of these are fairly expensive, including some fabulous luxury options. However, visitors don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy the town's principal attractions - the views, the scenery, the atmosphere.
Close to the site of one of the earliest colonies founded by the Ancient Greeks in Sicily, Taormina became a thriving Greek and then Roman town. The size and elegance of the town cathedral and many of its buildings are evidence of Taormina's moderate prosperity over the centuries. By the end of the 19th century this picturesque and ancient town was already on the tourist trail, with famous visitors including Oscar Wilde, Richard Wagner and Tsar Nicholas II. Over the last decades travellers have come for the views, the ancient ruins, the seaside, the town's film festival, an outdoor theatre season, the fine hotels and more. A classy honeymoon destination or a cheap and cheerful excursion from a cruise ship, Taormina has a lot to offer all kinds of visitor. As a consequence, of course, this small town is sometimes so crowded it can feel like a victim of its own success.
Accommodation is cheaper out of season, and the little town is less packed, too. March, April and May are good months to enjoy sunshine, the flowers and relatively-uncrowded streets and restaurants. Autumn in Sicily can feature heavy rainstorms, but also plenty of sunshine. On the negative side, out of season you may find hotel swimming pools emptied, building works underway around town, and little buzz in the nightlife.
Taormina is the one destination in Sicily, and probably the one Italian destination south of the Amalfi Coast, where tourism is really well-established and dominates the entire character of the town. So for less experienced travellers, non-Europeans, and newcomers to Italy, it is a manageable and reassuring place to stay. English is widely spoken, but the town still values its traditions and you'll enjoy Sicilian food and a fair amount of Italian atmosphere. If you are a seasoned Italy traveller and looking for authentic Sicily, Taormina is still worth visiting, though you'd probably prefer to combine it with other, less-touristy spots.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Chiesa di San Giuseppe
The church of San Giuseppe in Taormina was built in in the Baroque style between the late 1600s and the early 1700s. This church, dedicated to St. Joseph, is located next to the Clock Tower and faces out onto Piazza IX Aprile. A double staircase, with a balustrade of Syracuse stone, leads up to the entrance.
The gable façade in the baroque style, has a large central portal that leads into the church, and two small side portals, of which the right places in the sacristy and the left one leads to a recreation room that is often used for exhibitions of painting. The monumental main portal is made with marbles of Taormina from different varieties, jambs and architrave in white, grey and pink in the other decorative pieces. On the right side of the church stands the great bell tower, the lower part of which is made from large blocks of Taormina stone.
The interior, decorated with stucco work of the eighteenth century reproducing floral motifs and heads of winged angels, has a single nave with a transept that has at its center a dome where you can admire a fresco depicting St. John Bosco child between Madonna and Jesus. The main altar of the church is made with Taormina marble. Under the tabernacle there is inlaid the Madonna rises above the souls in Purgatory.
Behind the altar, in a niche of the apse there is the statue of Maria Ausiliatrice. Above the main altar, on the right, there is in a niche the statue of St. John Bosco with two boys, while to the left there is a statue of St. Joseph. Beside the altar of St. Joseph there is another niche which houses the wood and glass urn with the statue of the Dead Christ, which is carried in procession on Good Friday.
The pulpit is located at the base of the arch before the main altar. Next to the pulpit there is a small marble statue of Saint Dominic Savio, the saint of mothers and cradles, which holds a chart in the left hand with the words: Death rather than sin - Domenico Savio 1857, while in the right hand he is holding a crucifix on his chest.
In the sacristy of the church is remarkable a Taormina pink marble fountain placed in a niche surrounded by a round arch; at the top of the arc there is depicted the Virgin Mary with the souls in the flames of Purgatory at her feet, which is identical to that shown on the front of the main altar.

Piazza,Duomo e campanile Messina.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Chiesa di Santa Caterina
The church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria rises adjacent to the Palazzo Corvaja on the central Corso Umberto in the municipality of Taormina . Belonging to the archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. To the religious of the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor at the arrival in Taormina around the middle of the sixteenth century the church of Santa Caterina was granted outside the walls where they built their convent. In 1559, with the consent of the archbishop Pedro Ruiz de Valdevexo, it was put up for sale with the aim of obtaining proceeds and financing the construction of the new temple. The transaction is documented on April 27, 1610.
The church of Santa Caterina intra - moenia was built in the first half of the seventeenth century in Baroque style , built on the ruins of a small Roman theater, the Odeon , partially destroying the orchestra and the scene that consisted of the southern colonnade of a even more primitive Greek temple dedicated to Aphrodite. The church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria was closed for about 40 years in a state of precariousness and was restored and reopened for worship on 25 November 1977.
The front facade is bordered by two corner pilasters in ashlars spread over two levels. The entrance, raised five steps from the street level, is characterized by a central portal in pink marble of Taormina reproducing two Ionic columns on high plinths surmounted by Corinthian capitals . The architrave holds two curved side scrolls , each of them housing a cheering putto in a sitting position.
The intermediate niche of the broken tympanum in the Baroque style houses the statue of the holy owner depicted with the palm branch and the sword with which it grabs the tyrant and tetrarca Massimino Daia . On the left side the inevitable wheel, one of the instruments of martyrdom, the work of Paolo Greco was sculpted in 1705 . The hemisphere of the niche presents the shell decoration symbol of the earthly pilgrimage. The pilasters with external volutes hold up two herms that support the sill of the central window, in turn topped by a triangular tympanum.
