7 islands perfect for day trips | News Today
7 islands perfect for day trips | News Today We all love island getaways, but not everyone wants to plan their entire vacation around a remote resort. Thankfully, there are plenty of islands that make day trips a breeze so that travelers can easily enjoy a day on a secluded beach in the midst of an urban vacation.
Here are seven spots around the world that are only an hour away from the mainland, but feel completely cut off from civilization:
1. Bald Head Island, North Carolina
Bald Head Island and its surrounding waters were once a refuge for infamous pirates such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, nicknamed the Gentleman Pirate for his relatively refined ways.
Today the 12,000-acre island -- between the Cape Fear River on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, just a 20-minute ferry ride from Southport -- is more than 80% nature preserve, not to mention one of North Carolina's most bucolic seaside escapes.
Beyond the car-free island's main village lie miles of coastal sand dunes, salt marshes ripe for canoeing, and trail-filled maritime forests bursting with live oak trees and longleaf pines -- all easily accessible via bicycle or golf cart.
Bald Head is also home to one of the state's largest communities of nesting sea turtles as well as Old Baldy, North Carolina's oldest lighthouse still standing.
2. Rottnest Island, Western Australia
Eleven miles west of Western Australia, Rottnest beckons day-trippers with its azure waters and protected coves.
Ferries cover the 11-mile distance from the mainland's Fremantle (or Freo, as it's known locally) to the island's Thompson Bay, where rental bicycles are readily on hand for exploring all seven square miles of the island.
Visitors can snorkel shallow reefs among Western Buffalo Bream and spotted Red Lipped Morwong, sip a beer al fresco while basking in waterfront views, or snap a selfie with a quokka, photogenic little marsupials that exist primarily on Rottnest and whose perceived grins have earned them a name as the happiest animals on Earth.
One of the island's main allures is the ease of finding your own quiet spot, even during the summer peak season -- when visitors reach 15,000-plus a day.
3. Gaya Island, Malaysia
Board a speedboat in Kota Kinabalu -- the capital of Malaysia's Sabah State -- and just 15 minutes later, you're on Gaya Island. It's a tropical oasis of mangrove forests and white sand shores.
Despite its proximity to the mainland, Gaya is a paradise for snorkelers and divers. Its waters are particularly impressive: calm, translucent and teeming with hundreds of colorful marine species such as blue-ringed octopus and clown stars as well as the occasional whale shark in season (November to February).
The island makes up a large part of Malaysia's Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park and is home to miles of hiking trails and ample wildlife, including bearded pigs and proboscis monkeys.
4. Cozumel, Mexico
Although cruise ships flock to San Miguel -- the main hub on Mexico's largest Caribbean island -- the bulk of Cozumel remains largely undeveloped, and it's here that the real fun begins.
Remarkably clear turquoise waters and spectacular coral reefs surround the island, attracting divers and snorkelers who come to see spotted eagle rays and endemic spotted toadfish.
Punta Sur Park on Cozumel's southern tip is its largest ecological reserve, and is home to a stunning white sand beach, ancient Mayan ruins and even a crocodile-filled lagoon.
There's also Chankanaab National Park, part of the island's larger National Marine Park, where you can get close and friendly with dolphins and manatees.
5. Angel Island, San Francisco
Alcatraz may be San Francisco Bay's most notorious island, but nearby Angel Island has a controversial history all its own.
Now a California State Park, the island served as the Ellis Island of the West for millions of immigrants from 1910 to 1940. It also served as a detention center where many of those immigrants -- primarily those arriving from China after the passing of the Chinese Exclusion Act -- were detained.
Today a US Immigration Station Museum keeps the stories of its past alive, while the island itself is a refuge for Bay Area dwellers looking for a local escape.
There's a paved, six-mile path around the island's perimeter that's ideal for cycling (bring your own or rent one on arrival), a five-mile hiking trail resulting in 360-degree views from its highest point at 788-foot tall Mount Livermore and another hiking trail that includes access to a former US Civil War-era camp.
Ferries run from San Francisco to the island's Ayala Cove daily throughout summer. Once on the island, tram tours are also available.

El Palmeral - Cape Haze, Florida - Short-Term Vacation Rental
The only way to describe this comfortable Cape Haze residence is “quiet seclusion”! With lots of outdoor living space, you will never want to be inside! This tropical gem has a lot to offer. Perched on the bank of Amberjack Creek, this inviting home is surrounded by mature tropical plantings, including more than fifty palms of eight species (which is why I call this place 'El Palmeral' - The Palm Grove). Also, avocado, mango, bananas, bromeliads, orchids and much more.
There is a private dock (equipped with a 3,500 lb. boat lift, water, electricity and an underwater 'snook' light). Our dock is on Amberjack Creek, a tidal inlet, which provides shallow-draft access to the Gulf of Mexico (boats which draw in excess of 16 inches are not recommended for the creek, however, there are inexpensive slip rentals within 4 minutes of the property at Gasparilla Pass for larger boats). The creek abounds with wildlife - fish from the dock or watch for the Sandhill Cranes, Manatees and the throngs of leaping mullet, among others. The dock includes a new 6'x8' floating dock extension which makes launching of the two kayaks a breeze! The kayaks are high-tech, Swedish-designed 'Point 65 North' modular kayaks, which can be configured as one person or tandem kayaks.
The shell-covered back yard ties the creek side-setting seamlessly into the 1,300 square foot screen-enclosed pool and lanai, for what one visitor described as an 'obnoxiously paradisical' experience.
This is truly a 4-season destination, with its lush tropical plantings, screen-caged, heated pool with therapy jet bench and large screened/glassed lanai with 2 overhead fans. The pool area includes an awning-covered dining area with a teak dining table and seating for 6 to 8. The lanai has two sets of pocket, double sliding doors from the house - one from the kitchen/dining area and the other from the Master Bedroom - which, when open, expand those spaces to the outside. The screened lanai itself has a system of compound sliding doors, which can be fully opened to take advantage of pleasant weather and the almost constant, gentle Gulf breeze, or closed to allow the space to be heated or cooled as necessary. Whether opened or closed the lanai is a wonderful place to entertain, or simply enjoy the view of the tropical plantings, creek and frequent wildlife.
Walk down to the creek-side hammock and disappear for a while with a good book…this home is equipped for relaxation, and is also within walking distance of the local post office, grocery store, bank and pizza parlor!
As members of the Cape Haze POA, we have access to the association's 400 yd long, private, Gulf beach, adjacent to Cape Haze on Don Pedro Island. The beach is accessible, using our kayaks, from Don Pedro Island State Park's 100 acre land base, .9 miles from our property. It is a 4-minute (280 yard) paddle from the Park's dock to our community dock on the island, then a 5-minute (500 yard) walk to the Gulf beach (see the map of the route in the photo section).
In addition to the beaches adjacent to us on Don Pedro (Palm) Island, which are accessible by kayak, boat or ferry, the closest beach by car is at 19th St. on Gasparilla Island (Boca Grande), about 10 minutes away. Once you reach 19th St. there is beach access on every street all the way to the south end of the island, which is another 3 1/2 miles. So there are literally dozens of Gulf beaches. You can also drive north to Manasota Key in Englewood which is only about 15 minutes away. Once on Manasota Key there are three major county park beaches at the north, middle and south end of the Key, as well as Stump Pass State Park, which is at the very south end of the Key and is absolutely stunning.
It is only 4 minutes by car to the Boca Grande Causeway and 20 minutes by boat (at 'no wake' speeds) to Gasparilla Sound & the Gulf from our property's dock on Amberjack Creek. Minutes (1 to 15) away from multiple Gulf beaches, fine-dining restaurants, multiple state parks, nature preserves, walking & biking trails, boat tours, fishing trips, etc.
Each guest is provided with a personalized code for keyless entry valid for the length of their stay. Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 10:00 am. Upon arrival guests are provided with a detailed Guest Manual, describing all of the ins and outs of the property, including entertainment system operation, trash day, local resources and activities, etc. Confirmed guests are provided with their access code and a PDF copy of the manual, by email, in advance of their arrival.
Rental fees for reservations made more than 60 days in advance of your arrival date can be made in 2 or 3 installment payments.
Also check out our Englewood, FL property, “Minshall's Garden” - VRBO property #610815.

It was supposed to be a trip to paradise, but it turned into a nightmare for one Florida woman. Cindi Avila of Miami claims she was the victim of a bed bug infestation in her room at the Atlantis Paradis Island resort in the Bahamas. She said she woke up on the last day of her vacation covered in bites. Avila says she notified the hotel right away and went to the nurse on staff for help. Dennis HANISAK 3/7/18 Seagrass: The 'Lungs' of the Indian River Lagoon
About the Speaker
Dr. M. Dennis Hanisak is a Research Professor at Harbor Branch and Director of the Indian River Lagoon Observatory and Harbor Branch Education programs. His research is focused on marine plants, particularly macroalgae (seaweeds) and seagrasses. He has conducted research on marine plants in the Indian River Lagoon and in other parts of Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Dr. Hanisak is the author of over 80 scientific publications, a frequently invited participant at national and international meetings and workshops, a past President of the International Phycological Society, and a past President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Phycological Society of America.
As Director of Harbor Branch's Education Program, Dr. Hanisak is dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation by students and the public of the importance of the oceans and their impact on our lives. Among other activities, he has led and developed programs for university students, the Harbor Branch Summer Intern program, innovative programs with St. Lucie County School District (including the Marine & Oceanographic Academy on the HBOI campus), and the Ocean Science Lecture Series for the public. It is his belief that working scientists need to convey what they do, and why it is important, to students, resource managers, and the public, as well as to colleagues
About the Lecture
Seagrasses are flowering plants that form dense underwater beds in coastal waters. Seagrass has been called the lungs of the sea because of its ability to generate oxygen through photosynthesis. Healthy seagrass habitat is required for the ecological functioning and the economic viability of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). The lagoon’s health is directly related to the abundance and productivity of its seagrasses. Thus, a high priority for management of the IRL is attaining and maintaining a functioning seagrass-based ecosystem.
In this decade, the IRL has experienced catastrophic loss of seagrass due to two unprecedented phytoplankton “super blooms” and “brown tides”. Shading by the blooms resulted in widespread loss of seagrass, with up to 100% loss at many sites in the northern IRL; there was been only limited recovery. This lecture will provide an overview of the ecological and economic importance of seagrass, historical trends and current status of seagrass in the IRL, and current research at Harbor Branch that aims to determine if seagrass restoration in the lagoon might be feasible.
