Virginia & Truckee Train Trip, Virginia City, NV Oct 1999
Train trip on the Virginia & Truckee from Virginia City NV to Gold Hill NV, Oct 1999. I shot video of the next train after ours to get the exterior shots. The train backed out of Virginia City to enable the locomotive to lead on the return trip as there are no turning facilities.
VIRGINIA & TRUCKEE RAILROAD VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Virginia City Nevada was one of our favorite things we did in Virginia City Nevada. This classic short line train goes on a 4 mile RT to Gold Hill Mine and Back. This was such a fun scenic train ride through the historic town of Virginia City. You will have to come ride this with your whole family! For info

The V&T has a very interesting history. We learn a bit about its history, both the original V&T and the current incarnation of it.
Lots of really great video shots of the trains working their daily runs from various places on the line are included, and even some behind the scenes information about operations.
With special thanks to Hunter Lohse for helping film the scenes in this video and John Wiseley for being my High Desert Uber™.

Virginia & Truckee Railroad - May 24, 2014
I ended my spring road trip at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day weekend. Tired of donating cash to Mr. Harrah, I traveled down the hill to Carson City and Virginia City to catch the opening day of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad season. In Virginia City I shot No. 29 assembling its train in preparation for the short trip to Gold Hill where I also shot it as it backed down from Virginia City and returned. At Gold Hill I also shot the excursion from Carson City headed by McCloud River Railroad No. 18 as it pulled hard upgrade to Virginia City.

Living Steam: Virginia & Truckee Railroad - Early History
This is the first few minutes from a DVD, Living Steam, that shows a day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with Lee Hobold, Chris DeWitt and Kevin Owens firing up the Inyo. I made it back around 2007. (written by Jim Lohse)
It shows some historical documents and photos from the Nevada Historical Society collection at UNR. To me, the most interesting part was all the big names that had something to do with the early V&T railroad: Hopkins, McNally, Huntington, Crocker, and of course, Mills and Sharon.
The closing image of the modern-day Inyo was shot early on the day in 2007 that I shot the footage for the Living Steam DVD.

New Passenger Car for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad
The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is expanding! The private tourist line just bought two new cars. They're really cool and one was delivered in July.
To be clear this is the private railroad, not the state Reconstruction project. The private V&T Railroad is currently helping to construct the state project.
On July 16 and 17, 2008, one of the two recent V&T acquisitions was trucked from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Virginia City, Nevada. I was going to follow the car across Nevada to make video of the trip when one of the pilot cars didn't show up.
In my rented Honda Accordion, I was put into pilot car duty. We follow this former Kettle Moraine car from the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay as it crosses Nevada and is delivered to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Virginia City, Nevada.

Virginia City -- V&T 2010 Comstock Christmas Train of Elves
On December 12, 2010, I was up in Virginia City at the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. They were running their Christmas Train of Elves, a post-season special train celebrating the Christmas holiday. The D-1 diesel pulled the Gold Hill and Silver City coaches.
NOTE: I posted a 20+ minute video, I don't normally do that.
It was a lot of fun. I was asked to come up and get video that might be useful next year in a commercial. I don't know how successful I was at that, normally I like to video processes involving people and trains, but I have never been specifically tasked with showing people having fun. I focused on a few people who gave permission to be used in a commercial.
There's a nice shot where I am in tunnel 4, we're looking at Christmas light inside the coach and then pan down to a very nice looking woman. There's a couple families singing along with Jingle Bells and listening to Christmas stories.
Perhaps the stars of the show are the three Elven Christmas helpers we seen in the opening shot: Diamond Jim, Corey and Peggy. Diamond Jim and Corey work at the tourism authority in Virginia City, and Peggy has been working on the long-run trains all year in period dress. She really wows the crowd, and has a few fans who follow this youtube account.
Peggy mingles with the crowd, working with Corey and Jim to deliver cider and hot chocolate. Jim sings Silver Bells and Jingle Bells, while Corey reads Twas the Night Before Christmas.
We see the kids and parents on the V&T train wearing reindeer antlers with bells that make noise when they shake their heads. There's a great scene with the train coming out of Tunnel 4 where I get a nice closeup of a family looking at the scenery.
Perhaps the show-stealer young woman who brought her Pomeranian on the train. Conductor/Brakeman Tim had the idea to put antlers on the dog, and the woman did so.
Along the way I get some outside shots from the rear platform showing the lights on the side of the train, the inside of Tunnel 4, the Nevada landscape, and the crowds at the station.
My special thanks to the whole crew, Tom Gray, and especially Conductor/Brakeman Tim and Engineer Bill who gave me the run of the train and the rear platform. Bill made a couple special stops outside Tunnel 4 to drop me off and pick me up.
Merry Christmas from the virginiatruckee account an I pass along a Merry Christmas from everyone at the V&T Railroad. Just to be clear, I don't work for them and this channel is not an official channel for the railroad.

Virginia City Nevada Steam Railroad
The historic Virginia & Truckee Steam Railway was restored in 2010. The line runs between Virginia City and Carson City, Nevada. Images shot on Labor Day 2015 by W.J. McKay. Featured are live action steam train shots and images hosted by Kyle McKay (a.k.a. Kaptain Kreator). The song is The Ballad of Casey Jones written by Wallace Saunders in 1900 and recorded by Mississippi John Hurt in 1963.
Virginia City, Nevada
Recorded June 19, 1999.
Virginia City is one of the oldest established cities in Nevada. Like many cities and towns in the state, Virginia City was a mining boomtown; in fact it is one of the most famous boomtowns in the Old West as it virtually appeared overnight as a result of the Comstock Lode silver strike of 1859. During its peak, Virginia City had a population of nearly 30,000 residents. When the Comstock Lode ended in 1898, the city's population declined sharply.
The population of Virginia City is 1,000 people in the town. Virginia City was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961. This in effect created a Virginia City Historic District. Today, Virginia City is but a shadow of its former glory, however, it still draws over 2 million visitors per year. It is one of the nation's larger National Historic Landmarks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Keeping with tradition, Virginia City does not have any chain stores or fast food restaurants.
This video covers my short visit to the town in June 1999.
