Carlsbad Caverns national park vlog
I had the opportunity to take a quick trip from Dallas texas to Carlsbad New Mexico to check out the Carlsbad caverns. Carlsbad Caverns National Park is in the Chihuahuan Desert of southern New Mexico. It features more than 100 caves. The Natural Entrance is a path into the namesake Carlsbad Cavern. Stalactites cling to the roof of the Big Room, a huge underground chamber in the cavern. Walnut Canyon Desert Loop is a drive with desert views. Rattlesnake Springs, a desert wetland, attracts reptiles and hundreds of bird species.

SwitchbackKids 's Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ How to stay overnight in Carlsbad Caverns National Park
While Carlsbad Caverns generally serves a one-day visitor, there is much more to see as the sun goes down.
Unfortunately, there are no developed campgrounds or lodging inside the park, but the park does offer easy backcountry options for those willing to hike a bit.
Permits are required for camping along the Rattlesnake Canyon Trail, but those are easily acquired at the visitor center. As the ranger shakes the dust off the backcountry binder, it’s easy to tell just how few people use this option to camp inside the park.
The Rattlesnake Canyon Trail is located along the Walnut Canyon Desert Drive, inside the park, and you are almost guaranteed to be all alone. All you have to do is walk at least a half mile from the trailhead along the trail, then at least 100 feet off the trail, then try not to set up your tent on a prickly pear.
This campsite was beautiful, with great views of the desert, and also offered a much different above-ground perspective than the usual visitor receives here at Carlsbad Caverns.
To explore the rest of the park, we’d recommend taking the Natural Entrance into the park (winding Switchbacks that lead into the main chamber). If you get too tired to hike out, there is an elevator back up to the Visitor Center! The Big Room is self-guided, but be sure to add on a special ranger tour for access to restricted areas of the park.
You can read much more about our two days in the park on our blog: Switchback Kids (Carlsbad Caverns) (

New Mexico's Brokeoff Mountains Could See More Protection | Pew & This American Land
New Mexico's Brokeoff Mountains are a stretch of rugged canyons and peaks relatively untouched by development, and locals want to keep it that way.
The Brokeoff Mountains are located in the southeastern corner of New Mexico and encompass Lincoln National Forest, Carlsbad Caverns, and Guadalupe National Park.
Half of the mountain range has been designated as a wilderness study area because it is an ecological hotspot for rare plant and animal species. The area is also home to archeological sites, caves, and rock shelters. Still some unprotected spaces are threatened by natural gas development and mining for rare earth minerals.
The Bureau of Land Management is revising its management plan for the Brokeoff Mountains, and The Pew Charitable Trusts and local partners are encouraging the agency to conserve a greater share of land in this area to more effectively preserve its ecological richness.
Get to know this special place, and the people working to protect it, in this episode of This American Land, produced in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Walnut Canyon National Monument Hike - March 19th 2016
A day hike at Walnut Canyon National Monument near Flagstaff Arizona on March 19th, 2016. The area contains two hiking trails (rim and island). This hike was of the island trail. There was a small fee for entrance ($8 per person) and the hike took about an hour. There is also a nice museum at the ranger station which gives great background on the area for those who are unable to travel down the trail.

Tarantulas roam the roads in this town
Every year in southeastern Colorado, thousands of male trantulas scour the plains for a mate. One professor is trying to help people get to know the spiders better and fear them less.

White Sands National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)
Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, creating the world's largest gypsum dunefield. White Sands National Monument preserves a major portion of this unique dunefield, along with the plants and animals that live here.

White’s City RV Park in Whites City New Mexico offers full hookup RV camping at the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The location is noted for being severely run down and unkempt. Full hookup sites provide 30 and 50 amp service and are best utilized by self contained campers to avoid the poor bathroom conditions. The location right next to the entrance to the caverns is the only reason to stay at this location.
Dirt/ gravel roads with some paved and some dirt sites. Sites are close together with sparse tree coverage. What brings down the overall ambiance are a number of permanent/ long term RVs that are severely worn down and junky looking. if you can overlook them and can fit in the sites this place is a quiet and convenient overnight stay.
During the summer season the area is hopping with tourists and for fun there is a water park right across the highway. Not as bad as some of the other review sites suggest the location is just not worth the going rate ($36-$40 per night).
Tent sites are also available and are situated around a scenic grassy area with shaded picnic tables.
