A Tour of Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza
The plaza was established on March 9, 1978, by the Arizona Legislature in honor of Governor Wesley Bolin, who had died a mere 5 days previously on March 4. Prior to the resolution creating the plaza, it had simply been a part of the Legislative Governmental Mall. While the plaza exists only as a part of the Mall, in common usage the terms are interchangeable and the name of the plaza is often used in preference to the Mall.
Much like the National Mall on which it is loosely based, the Legislative Governmental Mall is intended as an open-air public space featuring monuments, memorials and gardens. Some of these monuments were erected prior to the inception of the Plaza, such as the monument to the USS Arizona which was dedicated over a year earlier on December 7, 1976. The Plaza, when dedicated, included these existing memorials and all subsequent memorials have been located within the boundaries of the plaza.
Also located in the Plaza is the memorial dedicated to the 158th Infantry Regiment, the oldest and most prestigious unit in Arizona. The monument, based off a captured Japanese monument in the Philippines, stands as one of the few if only memorials to the regiment which served as one of the premier unit of World War II.
Owing to its location directly in front of the state capitol, the plaza has also become a meeting place and a focal point for protests and demonstrations, such as the 2006 United States immigration reform protests, with Phoenix participants culminating in a rally at the plaza. Over 100,000 participants took part in the display.[2][3]

Climate Change Is Threat to National Security - Retired Lieutenant Colonel Joe Knott
Local Phoenix civic leaders and veterans hosted a press conference on Oct. 11, 2013 to examine the national security risks and implications posed by climate change as well as to call for policies that reduce climate change and the security threat it poses for our troops.
The event was sponsored by Operation Free, a nationwide coalition of veterans who recognize that climate change is a major threat that requires policies that can reduce climate change and, by extension, the threat multiplier it poses for troops abroad. The press conference took place in front of the Operation Enduring Freedom memorial at the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza in front of the state capitol. Speakers included Councilman Daniel Valenzuela, Phoenix City Council; Representative Mark Cardenas; Representative Andrew Sherwood; Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Joe Knott, former National Guard energy program manager; and Brett Hunt from Operation Free.
Local, secure energy makes our nation stronger. Climate change been identified by our military and security leaders as a threat to our vital interests around the world which diverts the military from its primary mission, said Brett Hunt with Operation Free. That is why military veterans, national security experts and the Department of Defense are moving out to power our country with clean, renewable energy that makes our military more resilient and our nation more secure.
Local communities in states across the country, including Phoenix have been directly affected by climate change. Average temperatures throughout Phoenix are increasing, along with extreme heat, crippling droughts, wildfires and unhealthy air days. Residents will face greater health risks from water shortages, flooding, dangerous heat waves, and declining air quality.
The event follows President Obama's historic action on climate change, which includes the nation's first-ever limits on carbon pollution from power plants, as well as new clean energy and energy efficiency investments along with other strategies to prepare America for the effects of climate change.
