White River Valley Overlook, Badlands National Park, South Dakota
Badlands National Park, South Dakota - White River Valley Overlook (2019)
Badlands National Park (Lakota: Makȟóšiča) is an American national park located in southwestern South Dakota. The park protects 242,756 acres (379.3 sq mi; 982.4 km2) of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, along with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The National Park Service manages the park, with the South Unit being co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe.
The Badlands Wilderness protects 64,144 acres (100.2 sq mi; 259.6 km2) of the park as a designated wilderness area, and is one site where the black-footed ferret, one of the most endangered mammals in the world, was reintroduced to the wild. The South Unit, or Stronghold District, includes sites of 1890s Ghost Dances, a former United States Air Force bomb and gunnery range, and Red Shirt Table, the park's highest point at 3,340 feet (1,020 m).
Authorized as Badlands National Monument on March 4, 1929, it was not established until January 25, 1939. Badlands was redesignated a national park on November 10, 1978. Under the Mission 66 plan, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center was constructed for the monument in 1957–58. The park also administers the nearby Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. Movies such as Dances with Wolves (1990) and Thunderheart (1992) were partially filmed in Badlands National Park.

Hey everyone, I compiled some video of the majority of overlooks and pullouts in Badlands National Park so you have an idea of what to expect at each location. This video includes Fossil Exhibit Trail, Big Badlands, Pinnacles, Conata Basin, Burns Basin, Panorama Point, White River Valley Overlook, Yellow Mounds and Bigfoot Pass Overlook. This is a truly amazing place and was formed from hundreds of thousands of years of erosion. Badlands NP has arguably the most abundant fossil beds to date!

Badlands National Park
Recorded June 24, 2019
Located in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and towering spires blended with the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. It is desolation at its truest, where you can look for miles and see no sign of civilization. Bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs inhabit its sprawling grasslands. The Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240) winds past scenic lookouts. This video covers my drive through the park on a sunny day in June. See the index below for more details...

Door Trail in Badlands National Park is really beautiful. Be sure to watch your step, there is a lot of loose dirt that could cause you to lose your footing and fall. Take it easy.
Yellow Mounds Overlook, Badlands National Park, South Dakota (Trip 4 Vid 9) United States
Yellow Mounds Overlook throws in some variety color-wise into Badlands National Park. There is some information there telling the story of how that happened.
Drive across Badlands National Park, South Dakota
Erosion from the White River and its tributaries in southwestern South Dakota has carved through a number of sedimentary layers that had built up over the eons, resulting in a number of colorful buttes, spires and other formations along a wall that parallels the river. Badlands National Park protects these formations, large expanses of native prarie grasses, and the flora and fauna that live here.
A scenic drive roughly follows this wall for several miles, and offers up a number of scenic overlooks and trailheads for visitors. Visitors may also have close encounters with buffalo and bighorn sheep (they're wild animals, so keep a respectful distance from them).
A bit of trivia - this geological wall was the inspiration of the name of the town of Wall, South Dakota, home to world-famous Wall Drug.

Cycling the Badlands of South Dakota
As always, thank you for dropping by.
The Badlands National Park of South Dakota is a stark, fascinating landscape of strange lure. Highway SD 240, which goes through it, is known as the Badlands Loop Scenic Highway. The length is 31 miles (50 km).
If driving westward on I-90, you can get onto 240 at Exit 131. Driving eastward, 240 can be accessed at Exit 110. The Loop is more or less a North by Northwest road. Or South by Southeast if coming from Wall.
Speaking of the town of Wall, SD, and whether you take the Loop, or not, DO NOT MISS WALL DRUG. It seems to be a national treasure!
If you are passing through the Badlands in the midst of summer and feel like hiking, then above all else, DO THIS: TAKE A GARGANTUAN QUANTITY OF WATER WITH YOU. It’s usually very hot, and dry as a desert bone.
The Badlands are out on the plains. I live not so far away, in the eastern foothills of the Black Hills. In fact, the entire Black Hills region offers some of the most challenging and beautiful roads and trails for cyclists, motorized or pedal.
In May, 2017, before it got hot, just as it was become greener, I chose a sunny day and drove the bike to Wall, then to the entrance to the Park. From there I biked slightly more than 8 miles (13 km) into the park.
It was a nice ride, sunny day, still cool, a few hills being a challenge while trying to use the camera. Nevertheless, neither the camera, nor certainly my abilities with it, captured what I actually saw.

We tent camped at Cedar Pass campground, which is on the east side of the Badlands, really close to the popular Notch Trail and the Door and Window trails. That's also where they do the night stars show. The campsite was great and had all the amenities we needed. Here's a link:
Also, get our tent because it's awesome:
On our second day, we drove west through the National Park and stopped at most of the overlooks to appreciate the beauty of this area.
We loved exploring the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Hopefully you'll have the opportunity to go see it for yourself. It's really an impressive park with landscapes we've never seen anywhere else. Thanks so much for watching!

We headed out one morning on Saddle Pass Trail...well, at least we tried to. We parked at the trail head but could not find the marked trail for the life of us!
With a complete stranger along for the adventure, we all scrambled up a very non-trail route in order to reach the pinnacle of the hike and get a great view of most of the park. And it was stunning. What a unique and truly beautiful place we had found.
After our initial ascent to the peak, we dropped back down and were greeted by some Bighorn Sheep (two mommas and two babies). Not really greeted so much...they were just trying to get away from us, but they did startle us as they tried. (no, we weren't chasing them.)
So yes, always Beware in the Badlands!
But it was still one of the unique moments in nature that we treasure so much, and part of what keeps us coming back to the national parks over and over again. There is so much beauty to experience, so much wonder to absorb. The parks are, without a doubt, sacred spaces for our family.
After one more scramble to the top of another peak that somehow gave us even better views than the first spot, we hung out for a bit, ate a snack and just enjoyed the mild temps of the day with a view fit for kings.
