Wines on Wine - All Things Bordeaux
For centuries, the wines of Bordeaux have been considered the greatest reds in the world. The reasons are many, but the long aging potential of the wines, the expensive aging in oak barrels, and the legend and lore of the region all contribute to the prestige of the wines. Bordeaux lies on the Atlantic coast of France, and its proximity to England is part of its quick rise to international fame. The first vineyards were planted here by the Romans, but the 300 years of British rule secured its place in the hearts of the English. Interestingly, the greatest vineyard sites in Bordeaux were swamps until the 1600s, when the Dutch were brought in to help drain this land and transform it to usable land. While the legendary bottles of Bordeaux can cost thousands of dollars, there are lots of everyday wines to be enjoyed here too.
Nearly every wine produced in Bordeaux is a blend, and while red
Bordeaux is the most famous, there are amazing dry white and sweet white wines produced here as well. The grapes used for the reds are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc primarily, with Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Carménère on occasion. The styles of red wine produced can be neatly differentiated by geography. The Garonne river divides the region in half. The Left Bank of the river hosts Cabernet Sauvignon–dominated wines with a little Merlot, while on the Right Bank the wines are made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc primarily. Cabernet Sauvignon is known for producing wines with great power and finesse, Merlot is soft, lush and juicy, while Cabernet Franc is fine-textured and herbal. Different soils and microclimates favor each grape in turn. Malbec has become hugely popular in Argentina and still grows heavily further south in France, but nearly every vine of it in Bordeaux was wiped out by frost in the mid-twentieth century and very little was replanted. When used in a Bordeaux blend, it adds intense color and rich, berry fruit flavors.
Because the wines of Bordeaux are so prized, winemakers all over the world imitate the style and blends of these wines. The cooler climate of this region means that the wines have brighter acid, firmer tannins, and less rich fruit character. Using premium grapes from California, BDX II is our nod to this amazing region.

Chateau Reignac - One of the Best Bordeaux Wines
Shop our collection of Bordeaux wines
Chateau Reignac Bordeaux always finishes first, second or third in blind tastings.
Transcript:
Reignac is probably, arguably the single best wine produced in the Bordeaux superior appelation. Frankly I don’t care about the appelation where this wine is concerned. We have tasted this wine blind many, many, many times against some of the very best wines in Bordeaux, including, but not limited to the first growths.
And invariably, tasted blind, Reignac always finishes first or second in the tasting. Why? Well I think it has to do with the fact that we created this cuvee back in 1996 together with the owner Yves Vatelot after he walked the vineyard with Michel Rolland selecting the very, very best vineyard blocks, reducing the yields in dramatic fashion, hand-harvesting the fruit, sorting the fruit not once, not twice but as many as three times to make sure that only ultra ripe, pristine fruit and no vegetal detratives got into the tanks.
The tanks were stainless, macerations, 100% in new oak barrels. Ageing runs a minimum of 18 months. This is very, very concentrated merlot-based wine, three-fourths merlot, one fourth cabernet sauvignon.
The winery and the vineyard are located about half way between Bordeaux and St Emillion and it seems like we get the best of both worlds because we've got both gravely soils here and clay soils.
Cabernet does beautifully in the gravel and Merlot does wonderfully well in clay. And when we put them together, we get a rich, complex wine unparalleled in the appelation and in fact if they were ever to redo the classifications that are made in Bordeaux, this wine would be certainly second or third cru class quality. Possibly even more so.

Château Léoville Barton Saint-Julien | Bordeaux Wine Review
Detailed wine review, rating and full tasting notes of 2012 vintage Château Léoville Barton, Saint Julien, Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux red wine, France.
Watch the full episode of Tasting with Julien' featuring the complete winery information about the properties of Barton & Guestier family, Leoville Barton and Chateau Langoa Barton 2009 vintage, some of the best Bordeaux wines, classified Grand Crus, as well as the complete information about the Médoc wine region of Saint-Julilen on Bordeaux' left bank of the Garonne River:
Château Léoville Barton is a winery, vineyard, and wine estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux’ Left bank, Médoc, ranked a second growth in the 1855 Classification.
The château building that features on Léoville Barton’s label belongs to Langoa-Barton, Léoville Barton's sister estate.
The vineyard nestles in the heart of the St Julien terroir among the most beautiful slopes of Garonne gravel, facing the Gironde river. The clayey gravel subsoil allows excellent growing conditions whatever weather the vintage brings. The plowing is traditional, without weeding or herbicide. The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (74%), Merlot (23%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).
The harvest was done entirely by hand. After the de-stemming, the berries are carefully sorted, crushed and poured in wooden vats thermo-regulated, according to their plots. The alcoholic fermentation lasts from 7 to 10 days and the extraction is always respectful of the juice by adjusting the number of pumping depending on the cuvées and the vintages. The maceration is about 3 weeks then the juice is drawn in barrels, lot by lot. The wine is then aged between 16 and 18 months in French oak barrels of which 60% are brand new, in a cellar maintained at 15 °.
The wines are topped up 3 times a week to avoid any contact between the wine and the air, the racking is traditional using the so-called à l'esquive method.
This 2012 vintage of Château Léoville Barton is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Merlot.
