Bioluminescent Kayaking in Florida in Clear Kayaks - Merritt Island | Get Up And Go Kayaking
Get Up and GLOW during bioluminescent kayak season this summer!
Bioluminescence is the emission of light by a living organism. When the organisms move in the water they create a beautiful glowing effect. This means that you can see fish underwater by the glow that they give off as they swim, your paddle will glow as you maneuver the waterways, and the natural flow of water will illuminate these organisms. The great thing about paddling in our clear kayaks is that you can also see the glowing directly below you!
As we are Florida’s premiere bioluminsecent kayaking destination, be sure to book in advance as the season generally runs from June-October and is most visible on the darkest nights with a new moon or no moon rise. Tours are first-come-first-serve, so don’t wait!
Tours take place in the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge just outside of Titusville, Florida. This area is not only home to the bioluminescence, but also large manatee and dolphin populations which both often make appearances during our excursions!

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville
My family and I are great wildlife enthusiasts and whenever we come to Florida we always try to visit a State Park as we are fascinated by the native wildlife. This year we visited Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, in Titusville, which is a stunning 140,000 acres of coastal dunes, saltwater estuaries, marshes and freshwater impoundments. These wide varieties of habitats are home to more than 1,500 species of plants and animals and can be enjoyed by visitors through many recreational opportunities such as bird and wildlife observation, a wildlife drive and a manatee observation deck.
The best place to see wildlife is along the Black Point Wildlife Drive. It's a 7-mile, one-way drive that takes about 40 minutes and feels like you are on an African Safari! One to two hours after sunrise and one to two hours before sunset are the best times to view wildlife actively feeding. We arrived at about 4.30pm, and as it was early February the sun began to set soon after 5.00pm, so we were treated with a magnificent sunset, breathtaking scenery and an incredible array of beautiful birds, so if you are a keen photographer, you certainly won't be disappointed!
To top that, as we left the park and drove down the road leading to the exit, we saw a large cat run across, as we got closer we then saw two smaller cats also run across. At first we thought they were some kind of small wild cats, but as there were no cars around my brother got out to have a closer look and soon realised they were actually baby Bob Cats because of their short stubby tails and striking fur patterns! How lucky was that!
Titusville Kayaking - Parrish Park, Spring 2018
Kayaking around a few small islands on the Indian River. We launched from Parrish Park in Titusville, circled the north island headed south under the Causeway, then went to the south island.
Footage taken on April 13, 2018 with my Campark ACT74 Action Cam.

Kayaking with Manatees in Merritt Island, Florida!
We did something amazing that we've never done before; kayaked with manatees! So many manatees swam around us as we paddled through the water in the Indian River. The tour was provided through A Day Away Kayaking Tours, which gave amazing service! We arrived and didn't realize we would be the only two people on the tour with our amazing guide! We would highly recommend taking some time out of your Florida vacation to do this, we had a fantastic experience.

Indian River Lagoon Kayaking
The Indian River Lagoon is a vital estuary along the east coast of Florida. On New Year’s Day 2017, we decided to Kayak within the southern portion of the lagoon and enjoy some of the natural beauty. This video was made in the Hobe Sound region including the shoreline of Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, I provide some commentary on this incredibly important natural resource.

Great time tent camping with my girls and also camping in our Winnie Drop with Jimmy to visit the Kennedy Space Center
Manatee Hammock Campground website:
For several years now I have had the urge to travel which has been a dream of mine before marriage and children. My husband was never keen on the idea until one afternoon last year he said, let's do this! The next day I began to sell, donate and give away items from my home. He was a bit shocked when he got home from work. I immediately called a realtor and our home sold within 24 hours for more than we were asking. I had sold, donated and given away EVERYTHING so that the day we moved we didn't even need a truck because we were able to drive away with everything we had left in both our vehicles. We moved to a smaller place directly across from the beach to enjoy the sunrise and sunsets for the following year before taking off to travel the world!

Floridas Canaveral Seashore Kayak Camping
We took a overnight trip to Orange Island at Canaveral national seashore. We wanted to test our camping gear in a kayak setting.
I will put the gear I used below.
Q: Can we carry all of our gear on out kayaks?
A: Yes, but we pushed the limit. I had a 75 lb backpack and about 10 lbs of firewood in the stern of the kayak, and 5 lbs of food in the bow. This brought me down very low in the water. We will need to find ways to lighten our loads.
Q: Is all my gear waterproofed?
A: Somewhat. My clothes were fine, and the food was fine. These were both in dry bags. I did not think to waterproof the tent and hammock. They got wet and the hammock was a little damp to lay in. Also my GRMS radios did not like the water.

BK Adventure Monkey Kayak Tour
If there is one outdoor tour you do in Florida – it MUST be this one! Join us at the historic Silver Springs to start a monkey tour through paradise that leads into the Silver River. You will see more wildlife in nature on this tour than on any other tour – including wild monkeys. This crystal clear, aqua marine water way and surrounding jungle paradise were the location for the original Tarzan movie. It is also the home of Eco-Tourism in the USA. This spring opened to tourists in 1878 with the first glass bottom boats. Today, it is a Florida State Park with protected wildlife and waterways that we can all enjoy in its natural splendor.
Be prepared to take lots of photos as iridescent blue fish swim past your kayak, as you spot turtles and alligators sunning themselves on river logs, as a variety of exotic birds fly by, and as you hear the chatter of the Rhesus monkeys in the trees above.
Kayaking in the Indian River Lagoon
#1 Place to Spot Manatee Year Round Encountered Up Close Manatee
Haulover Canal is known to be one of the best spots in Florida to find Manatee all year round. Connecting The cape Canaveral National Seashore to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge.
Observation decks are available for those who don’t want to get on the water. But the best way to see the manatees is definitely in the water by kayak. Taking a guide with you will be important because the area is known for sandbars and mangrove swamps that should be navigated with caution and care. Large body of water on both sides. The Indian river lagoon is notorious for sudden strong winds. So kayaking safety is recommended. Anyone who has any health conditions, is not in good physical health should not go out when winds are exceeding 5mph Those who are strong and athletic safety standards call for winds up to and not exceeding 20mph.
The refuge Manatee Observation Deck is located on SR 3 at Haulover Canal. Manatees frequent this spot year round and can be seen most reliably during the spring and fall. The Bairs Cove boat launch also offers another viewing option.
The refuge offers Manatee Programs that meet at the Visitor Center and then caravan to the deck during the spring and summer seasons. Call 321-861-5601 for dates and to make reservations or check the refuge monthly calendar here for dates and other programs.
