Pan Yu Liang's Adventures in Jazz Age Paris
Among many art, music and literature lovers, particularly devotees of Modernism, the expatriate community in France during the Jazz Age represents a remarkable convergence of genius in one place and period—one of the most glorious in history. Drawn by the presence of such avant-garde figures as Joyce and Picasso, artists and writers fled the censorious cultures of their homes in China, Russia and the United States to head for the free-wheeling scene in Paris, where they made contact with rivals, collaborators, and a sophisticated audience of collectors and patrons.
The outpouring of boundary-pushing novels, paintings, ballets, music, and design was so profuse that it belies the brevity of the era (1918–1929). Among them was the fascinating and supremely talented painter Pan Yu Liang, the first woman from China selected for a scholarship at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. This talk, based on Prof. Charles Riley's book, Free as Gods: How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism, will frame Liang's achievement as an artist and teacher, including her tempestuous return to teach in Nanjing and Shanghai, with stories of other notable talents in the creative community of Paris between the wars.

Cast Iron or Carbon steel need to be seasoned (treated) before being used. Seasoning is a dry and glass-hard coating which makes pan nonstick and rust resistant using Oil Polymerisation. At very high temperatures, certain oils can dry, harden and bond to the metal of your pan.

PAN AM AIRLINES 1960s GRAND TOUR OF EUROPE TRAVELOGUE MOVIE 60134
This color film from the late 1960s was produced for Pan American by Dynamic Films. It features six European cities: Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, Florence, The Riviera, and Paris. We begin in Lisbon, Portugal (1:46), a city with over 2,700 years of history. A fisherman and his son walk through the Old Quarter to the harbor (1:47-2:38). Buckets of fish are transferred in baskets to shore each morning (2:47-3:02). A cable car moves up the street (3:25). Fishermen hoist a sail and head out to sea (3:59-5:29). Our Pan American Boeing 707 Jet Clipper (5:30) takes us Madrid, Spain, where a couple ride a Vespa (5:48). Inside the Plaza de Toros Las Ventas (6:22), bulls are viewed to choose for the afternoon fight (6:34-7:19). The matadors parade through the bullring (7:20). The first bull enters to either kill or be killed (7:42-8:47).Our third stop is Rome, Italy (8:57) where a tour guide passes the Fountain of Neptune (9:09) and other ancient ruins (9:51) by bus. We approach the Castelo. Angelo (10:02) via the Ponte Sant’Angelo (Bridge of Angels) whose first angel was added in 1535 (10:10). Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) is the largest Baroque fountain in the city (10:28-10:48). The tour bus stops at the Vatican (10:55-11:45) before approaching the ruins of the Colosseum (11:48-12:15) and the Roman Forum (12:17-12:54). A tour bus approaches our fourth city, Florence, Italy (13:16). A large bust of composer Benvenuto Cellini is along the Pone Vecchio bridge (13:23). A shop showcases gold jewelry (13:38). The Il Duomo di Firenze Cathedral dates back to 1296 (14:02). The Piazza della Signoria (14:32) symbolizes the Florentine Republic.
Our fifth stop is The Rivera in France. A waterski instructor climbs into his Citroen 2CV (15:32) and heads down the hill to the Mediterranean Sea. A woman in a bikini (16:08) throws rope to two water skiers, one in a bikini (16:09-17:20). The boat passes yachts (17:22) and the two bikini women sunbathe (17:31). On shore, more bikini sunbathers (17:45-17:54). Our Pan Am (18:13) wings next to our last stop: Paris, France (18:23). A coachman takes on his first client in his horse and carriage (18:41), passing local buildings, including the Pan American office (19:03). One of the most iconic landmarks, the Arc de Triomphe stands at the end of the Champs-Elysees at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle (19:15). A fashion show (19:25-20:03) highlights beautiful women and clothes. A woman joins the man in the carriage for a romantic ride (20:15) and they pass by the Eiffel Tower (20:46), the Notre Dame Cathedral (20:55), the Palais Garnier (21:17), and Notre Dame again in the distance (21:37). They take a sightseeing boat down the Seine River (21:51) and under the historic Le Pont Alexandre III bridge with its many statues (22:05) and past the Eiffel Tower (23:04). The evening revisits a nightclub singer in Lisbon (24:06), flamenco dancers in Madrid (25:04), and can-can dancers in Paris (26:22). A map shows the Europe Grand Tour cities (27:55).
