Corfu - Catholic Cathedral of Sts. Jacob and Christopher (Duomo)
The Catholic Holy Cathedral of Sts. Jacob and Christopher constitutes, like the temples of Saint Fragisko of Asissi and Virgin Mary of Tenedos or Carmelo, one of the holy temples that are included in the Catholic Archdiocese of Kerkyra-Zakynthos and Kefallonia. It was built in 1588 following a licence given by archibishop Martino to the roman catholic community of the island. In 1709, the cathedral was renovated but in 1943 it was heavily damaged by the nazi germans bombs. The building was restored by the 1970s but St. Jacobs holy relics had been moved to the orthodox cathedral of St. Theodora. The Catholic Cathedral has various appreciable works of art, one of which is the mural of the icon painter Chryssoloras, dated 1756. The central Holy Podium is dedicated to the Crucified Christ.
